Generating a WAH envelope
Greetings synth-cadets and musicians alike, merry chrimbo times to all
-not been on here in a while, but always come back eventually. :-)
It’s the season to be creative 👍🏻
Hey so i bought this gadget : an M-WAVE Chocolate, And paired it with an expression pedal (cheap n cheerful M-AUDIO one). Lovely combo.
I have an app known simply as ‘WAH’. It’s working nicely for -just that!
However I’m looking to create some kind of evolving/(changing) envelope to the WAH effect.-basically some kind of automated auto-wah’ing as the result.
Can anyone suggest an app I could use to achieve this ? Like many here, I rig my jamming thru AUM 👍🏻
And that’s it really? Thanks! Take care have fun

Can you use and lfo or FAC Envolver to send cc# to the filter parameter?
oh , uhm.... your AUM judo is good! (I think!) -I'm... not entirely sure I understand how to do that..
-but im greatful for the idea! 💡
It depends on the apps you own. For example if you have FabFilter Volcano 2 it's extremely easy to create an auto-wah effect with it: use a bandpass filter and modulate it with an envelope.
Baby Audio Transit 2 could also do this, with an envelope follower and a filter.
FAC Envolver is an envelope follower that will generate MIDI, which you can then send to a filter app to modulate.
@richardyot, thanks for this info. Any specifics you can provide on how/if one can do the "Baby Audio Transit 2 could also do this, with an envelope follower and a filter" option w/in Loopy Pro (If you're familiar with Loopy Pro) would be appreciated...I'd like to experiment but am new to some of these things...Thanks
The envelope follower is built into Transit, so all you need is to set the modulation to "envelope" and then add a filter effect, set to bandpass and you have an auto-wah. It should be very straightforward to do.
Here's a video on the evenlope follower in Transit:
Here are some of the apps I have at my dispsal:
Think I can make it work with any of these? 🙏🏻
Since the discussion touched on other apps than the initially mentioned wah pedal, maybe you could also do some experiments with Flux mini 2 given that it's free.
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/flux-mini-2/id1617636726
Also I think the mentioned "evolving/(changing) envelope" could use some further elaboration, as there might be multiple different options to choose from.
yes, i could defo still use some guidance on this ! 😇 😄
-merry christmas everyone!
I have lots of ideas, but the question isn’t clear to me. I don’t understand if you’re looking for something that cycles the WAH up and down automatically over time, which would call for an LFO rather than an envelope. Or if you’re looking for something that responds to your playing, automatically moving the WAH sort of like you’d move your foot when you hit louder notes, which would call for an envelope follower. Or if you’re wanting something that changes the character of the WAH over time, while you’re still manipulating the WAH with your foot. Or? Also, do you want to stick with the Nembrini WAH?
I think you’ll get better answers if you explain what you’re after a little better.
i think you're looking for envelope controlled filter.
the closest i've found to the mutron 3 and it's variants is bleass filter.
https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/bleass-filter/id1464916830
to my ear it captures the envelope following and envelope shape correctly. the sensitivity setting works well. the multi-mode filter also sounds good. to get closer to the mutron 3 sound use a little bit of distortion, overdrive, or amp emulation after the envelope controlled filter.
bleass filter can also be used as an auto wah. lots of lfo shapes to control the filter, synced or free running. the envelope follower and auto wah can simultaneously control the filter if you wish. bleass filter can't envelope trigger the lfo. it can't filter one source, while a second source is triggering the envelope follower ( eg. guitar through filter, triggered by drums. lovetone meatball was great for that technique ). bleass filter is fast and easy for mutron 3 type sounds.
the wow filterbank is very good for envelope controlled filter and auto wah effects. it's more flexible, has more options, more filters, etc. it takes a lot more effort and time to get the envelope following and envelope shape correct. sometimes too many choices is too much work.
https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/wow-filterbox/id666864434
i expected fabfilter 3 to be the best option on ios, and while it's good, i find bleass and wow superior with regard to the envelope following and envelope shape. no matter how much i play with the envelope shaping options provided, i can't get it sounding the way i would like. it does allow side chain triggering of the envelope follower.
i have the same issues with tb dual vcf.
Standby. I see Rob Jackson has submitted a new Wah app to AppStore. (From his Facebook)
It’s Fabfilter volcano and Saturn for me. Takes some tinkering to get the envelopes to respond to your dynamics just right though, so it’s a little tricky to use in a live setting - especially if you have multiple effect patches that have varying gain stages… but I’ve found that the volcano filters can really provide the most unique and juicy sounds due to the insanely customizable envelope controls. The possibilities are almost too much haha
Hi there (all) 👋🏻
Coming back to the msg after a busy Christmas it’s fantastic to see so many ppl with ideas.
Yeah upon reflection, I think my original post/description of ‘an envelope changing over time’ was a bad choice of words.
-yeah what im after is a lot more simple really.
Basically I’m trying to open and close the WAH effect automatically, repeat, repeat, just without having to use my physical foot-pedal (‘I have an m-audio expression pedal).
So basically I’m playing the keys, and the WAH effect (open, close) / 0-128 kindathing… is in effect constantly.
-to be able to adjust the duration (‘how long it takes to complete 1 cycle - closed > fully open > closed again) would be what I’m looking for. 👍🏻
-I’ve grabbed Flux Mini 2 now, thx for the headsup @zoltan , I’ll try n give it a shot 👍🏻
All you need then is any LFO app with it's MIDI CC output pointed at the AUv3 parameter for the WAH. If you need help with how to do that, let us know what DAW and if you have any LFO apps, such as the one in Rozeta Suite, or many others you may already have.
Ok I think I know how to set that up.. I’m familiar with routing bits in AUM (‘which I use most frequently btw, I know it’s not a DAW). In terms of LFO apps.. I mean, a good number of soft synths offer LFO controls.. but I’m pretty sure this is not completely what you mean..
Basically I’ll be using NeoSoulKeys by Gospel Musicians much of the time, as I love their sounds.
Yeah I sort if felt the discussion prematurely pivoted to envelope followers, just because the word "Envelope" was mentioned
But probably was the reason I ended up mentioning Flux Mini 2 myself (though the paid version is where it's at AFAIK).
But there are tons of possibilities - just not sure if you want to use your expression pedal mid-performance, or would it be acceptable to use some kind of control surface or touchscreen-centric approach.
If the latter is an option, then sky's the limit, really.
Just gonna leave this here as an example (even though this doesn't change the modulation speed - as per your other reply - just the depth and the overall envelope center position):

Howdy. For anyone interested in an auto-wah type effect, I released one today. It's combined with a fuzz, but you can run them independently or in series.
It's called FuzzWah and I'll maybe create a new topic for it.
