Most larger studios have their own engines, but Unreal is still pretty heavily used, in modded forms, by lots of studios. Unity too, too a lesser extent.
You may have come across this already, but Unreal's metasounds is pretty impressive. Unreal is free to use if you're not pulling down the big bucks.
Metasounds is a modular, node-based scripting language, similar in look/concept to Audulus. There are synth modules and file players that can take your pre-composed stems or clips and trigger them via 'custom events', e.g. player location, enemy proximity, specific action, etc.
It's like interactively mixing and performing your music procedurally, based on the player movement in the game world.
Quite a learning curve with Unreal though. I'm not really a fan of it, despite how much I have to use it for work 😂
That's a pretty cool insight.
I really like that. I don't know if I'd use Unreal for creating videogame music though, much like Audulus blows my mind, but if I do decide to start a career in making music for videogames, I'll keep all this in mind.
Cheers.
