Help Buying: What is the best keyboard for iPad?

  • I fancied the MPK too but was put off for the same reasons. The UMA25S works well but will only work with external PSU on both iPad 3 and 4. It's quite a cute thing and came in a nice case with bundled software & headset. Key action is a bit flat but plays well and I seem o have adjusted to it.

If the MPK is anything like the LPK I really dislike the size and feel of the keys and the mini USB disconnects from the keyboard far too easily.

  • I had a MPK and got rid of it for the same reasons, the feel of the keys, the pads and the connector. The MAudio Axion Mini looks like a good small keyboard . I am actually waiting on one, would let you know how it feels .

  • I looked at the Arturia Mini Lab today - it's actually a great value, comes with ( Laptop ) software bundled. Smaller than you'd think it is! Keys seemed decent for the size.

I bought a KORG nanoKONTROL2, because I like faders - mixer style track volume setting is very natural. They are making a more "real" piano keyboard in 2 sizes ( and RED keys if you wish ) that will be out soon, which the Nano's can dock on ( via a USB in ) if you have a powered hub to run them both.

It's working well so far, no complaints. ( I just wish apps were more uniform in their MIDI controller / learn support - some don't even have it yet. )

Here's another question for the forum, which I'll probably break off into another thread - which iPad CASE / holder is the best for music making?

OtterBox seems to have the greatest rep. ( and pricetag ) - can you fit the CCK* on your iPad while inside it? ( And a regular sized 1/8 audio out - some cases DONT )

*who even uses the CCK for a camera? ; - ) I've never seen it done.
USB ports native on iPad 5, please!

  • I'm currently waiting for my Qunexus to arrive, nice and compact and can be powered from the iPad. I personally thought the keys were very expressive (a KMI rep lives near me and let me try a demo unit), much more so than I would have guessed by the pictures. Definitely the best feeling of the smaller midi keyboards IMO, and pretty well built too. I'd have no issues just tossing it into my backpack with the iPad.

  • @VJFranzK I use this one because I find the Bluetooth keyboard useful. The case is flexible and has magnetic lock.

  • Interesting - I hadn't noticed the Qunexus. ( My friend uses their Softstep floor unit, which also claims to be iPad powerable - that is indeed an innovative company. )

I have considered a keyboard case at times - handy for writing on the forum!
It is too bad that more music apps don't let you map iOS keyboard shortcuts to controls ( do they? ) because that is a handy feature for laptops...

iNotice that nobody has mentioned the MPC Fly here? Which does supposedly work with other apps besides iMPC ( not yet on the bus ) . I just wish it had more non-pad controls.

I know you can control Loopy with Bluetooth keyboard.

  • Finally got my Axion Mini 32 , love it , it's much better than the MPK Mini.

  • @JuniorPops it got bad reviews because the software wasn't ready at shipping. I really like it too. You'll love the ignite software. Great thing is Avids working on a IOS version of ignite now.

  • "INotice" ftw

  • Got the minilab by Arturia. I'm loving the software that came with it on a macbook pro. The keyboard is supposed to work with the iPad. Not the software! When using a keyboard with an iPad I imagine that the drum pads will be a great feature. They feel excellent.
@Mgmg4871 do you feel the Alpatronix is strong protection for your iPad? The keyboard seems perfect but can that case do a little traveling?

  • @MANAWANGA Ive had it for 5 months with no issues. Love the magnetic lock. Its very secure.

  • I've got the Keystation Mini 32 from M-Audio and it's pretty nice, but lacks knobs. I've considered getting a LaunchKey from Novation.

  • The Axiom Air mini 32 has 8 knobs, 8 pads with 2 banks, hyper control, and compatibility with upcoming Ignite app.

  • I just got a Samson Carbon 49 after looking at a few others (in person at a real store). I am really happy with the feel and the fact that it has a little place on top to set your Ipad on top. Good for switching apps neatly. It's very similar to the M-Audio Key Rig 49 at the same price. Nice and simple, like my musicianship... :-(

  • Yes. The carbon 49 is very convenient with the ipad slot. My only issue was not being able to charge ipad, but for $90 who's complaining.

  • @mgmg4871 if you use combo iPad2 + iRig MIDI + Samson Carbon 49, you can charge iPad through mini usb port on iRig MIDI.

  • I'm probably going to get the iRig Keys for now but also keeping an eye on the upcoming Miselu C.24 wireless iPad cover keyboard. It's got a modular concept with slots designed for further expansion controller modules and also designed to connect to one another to extend the key range: http://createdigitalmusic.com/2013/07/miselu-uses-wireless-magnets-ribbon-springs-for-upcoming-midi-keyboard-iosdesktop/

  • @wienzzz Thanks. I happen to have the Irig Midi around collecting dust.

  • Yeah, I tried it with intentions of buying it, and found the feel of the keys wasn't for me. I'm used to nice semi-weighted keys (think Roland, FATAR, Ensoniq, AKAI MPK series, etc). You can't expect much for the price though, and the number of keys it has is pretty good, so my recommendation is to go try one out for yourself before buying. Of the four keyboards I currently have, what I'm currently using is my Oxygen 8 v.1 because it has controllers and full size keys and yet runs on batteries and works great with my iPad.

  • The CME X-Key mentioned earlier in this thread is out now. Has anyone tried it?
I'm looking for a small keyboard that gets its power from the ipad but I'm not sure about the playability of keyboards with button-like keys such as the Nanokeys or, on the other end of the spectrum, the QuNexus. Is it just a matter of getting used to them?

  • Can anyone recommend a lightning-direct keyboard? I really don't want to go the "camera kit" route. iRig Keys is saying they are the first to have a direct line to lightning but it's not readily available here in China, yet.

Anyone else know of another solution? Actually, any "toy" that plugs in directly...

  • I've been using akai mpk mini and its been great for me despite slightly spongy keyboard and 2 octave limitation and built in arpeggiator with timing problems (who needs that anyway). It's very solid as far as being recognized by ipad without powered hub etc. I've recently bought arturia minilab but sent it right back as I found the knobs sending very steppy midi resulting in unusably steppy filter sweeps (has anybody experienced that or was it that particular unit?). Anyhow that had a better keyboard and more knobs then akai but I sent it back for the above reason. I just got m-audio axiom air 32. The keyboard is a bit better than akai (esp for extra keys) but I find midi channel switching overly complicated (akai = 2 button job, axiom = 4) but that's mostly for live use. I'm also struggling to find a way to assign drum pads to a separate midi channel to the keyboard so for instance I could trigger drums from beatmaker 2 and magellan's synth at the same time. Anyone managed this? If this is possible then axiom air mini 32 has got a notch above akai mpk mini otherwise akai still a pony of most tricks.

  • Also axiom has been very moody with being recognized by ipad 4 via cck. Eventually it is working once I've found a shorter (?!!) USB cable!

  • I am very pleased with my Samsun Graphite 49. It surprisingly will run powered directly from the iPad via CCK, has all the knobs and sliders like the others but has complete flexibility in programming them. Even easy to do ad-hoc.

  • @dwarman thanks for that tip. Walked into a music store tonight to buy an Arturia Keylab 49 but checked out the Samson on your recommendation. Saved 200 bucks! We'll see how it goes.

  • @syrupcore, if you want to bounce config and application ideas I'm here, still learning it myself. Unless you hate it, in which case ... (hides')
