OT Something for the weekend Backstory -

@Simon uses this phrase when he posts every week , which makes me smile with nostalgia -
then I realise maybe younger or non UK readers may not get the reference -

in the UK , back in the day , barber shops would supplement their haircutting & comb selling income by
offering condoms to their gentlemen customers when they went to the till (cash register) to pay -
with the euphemism “something for the weekend sir? “

I confess when I started going to the barbers alone (13-ish ?) ,
I was confused as they had never asked this when I previously visited with my mother ,
& spent months declining the offer without understanding what they meant .

Ha! I always think exactly the same! The same thing alluded to in The Divine Comedy's song "Something for The Weekend" :)

Every week I wonder whether they're knowingly nudge-nudge wink-winking or not!

They were a knowing nudge nudge wink wink but not based on the condom story.

I first heard it in the 1970s on, I think, the Monty Python TV show.

From memory, it was a newsagent with dirty magazines under the counter. The customer would buy a regular newspaper and the newsagent would ask "something for the weekend sir?". He would then duck under the counter to get the magazine. The customer hides it inside his newspaper so nobody will see.

I wondered if anybody picked up on my using it. I thought only the Brits would know...

I’ve been meaning to keep my M1 I pad pro on iOS 18 to not lose apps during an upgrade. I’m new to this, should I update? Or will I lose support?

  • I asked for feedback here before upgrading my M1 Pro to 26, and experiences seemed to be positive. I’ve had no reason to regret the move myself (which isn’t a guarantee that it will work with everything you have, like).
