How're the slightly overdriven to mid-range gain settings on these amps? I'm real happy with Bias, and, since it came out, ToneStack has been my favorite for what I do, which is Stonsey blues/rock. Thanks for the the reviews; like everyone else, I need a new guitar app like ... Well you know the rest.
Well for $10 and a TSTR demo how can one not buy it? Playing with it now.
Hmm, its different. Not sounds I normally get from any other amp sim. There is a metallic, as in real metal-ish tone highs, not metal music, feel to most every thing. When I start pulling in effects I start to get some clicks and pops here and there, but I rarely use effects so no big deal to me.
Not sure if I'll use it much or not based on the 30 minutes of testing so far, but it does have a unique and different sound from all the other amp sims I have IMHO. The sounds are good, just a little different, to my ear, than what I am used to.
@BigDawgsByte, what are you running it on?
iPad 4 64MB, iOS 8.1.1 no other apps running and most background app refresh off into a Yamaha THR-10C for speakers.

I mostly agree with that. Not sure if "metallic" is the word I would use, but as you get in the slightly crunchy range, you can hear something going on with the tailing off of notes. That being said, it's not that it was distracting or objectively "bad" in anyway, but it's just part of the gain structure in this app, and you can take it or leave it.
Watching Doug's video right now - certainly helpful for showing a demo of the app (and perhaps the range of sounds), but that guitar VST does sound very non-human. And the playing in the first 6 minutes or so was very metal-oriented. But I can tell you that the VST Doug was using in the video gave the amp a very "SoundFont-y" feel to it, which was not my experience at all in live playing.
@supanorton - Those "in between" sounds are present. That's probably an area better handled by Flying Haggis, but at the same time, Amp ONE has significantly wider overall range of tone when you consider all the different preamp options and the mods available for each. For example, Flying Haggis really does not do any kid of metal whatsoever, though it can do blues and classic/heavy rock very well.
Your question is one thing I was checking for, but didn't have a lot of time. The Marshall, MESA, and Blues Junior definitely have fully clean tones with their own character. The "fat" channel on the Blues Junior does a bit of that Fender overdriven growl, but does it respond exactly like a cranked tube amp based on where you have the knows? Probably not. It did feel like it was getting more overdriven as I was pushing individual notes harder, though one's opinion of how well that is done is, well, subjective.
But it's got quite a bit of range, and I like most of what I heard when I tried it out (wish I could play it right now!) I'm not familiar with the Harlequin, Krank, and whatever that rack preamp is, and I found those tones less impressive. However, they have a large amount of tweaking options in there, so I'm sure you could find something interesting with them as well.
I messed with this a bit more tonight. But through Headphones, with some issues........ I'll get to that in a sec.
I was able to dial in some good rock sounds with it, more so as noted above, some really really good metal tones. Someone had mentioned somewhere that the reverb is "all that" and I would agree. It's got something going for it, in a big way.
I did not notice this when I played through speakers, but, through my headphones, no matter which amp, or settings I tried, the app was doing some strange auto panning stuff? Sometimes it would be equally heard in both my left and right ear, then at other times one or the other. Then at other times, it would change between the left and the right????? I tried out JamUp and Bias without changing anything except closing Amp one and bringing the others up. They both sounded good and equal in the left and right. Fired up amp one again, and same thing with the weird auto panning.
Anyone????
Yeah I did get panning to one ear when I switched of the cab sim.

What do you use ? My Ipad 3 + apogee jam + headphones work fine. No "auto panning". In the App you use effects (delay, chorus)? What settings ?
@mmp said:
is correct. when cab sim off, preamp in one channel only (left or right) . For "stereo" turn on the chorus and put dry / wet mix to zero.
I appreciate the reviews everyone. Thank you.
Has anyone with this app compared the tones with the free VSTs available from the same dev?
Is the chorus on this app really a "Dimension D" emulation? if so how good does it sound? I have always liked the pedal version the Boss dimension C both rare now and expensive collectors items.
C_Ph: "What do you use ? My Ipad 3 + apogee jam + headphones work fine. No "auto panning". In the App you use effects (delay, chorus)? What settings ?"
I used ipad air, iriff-port. I didn't adjust the delay or chorus much, what ever was the preset for those I kept. Mostly messed with the reverb, gain, eq and cabinet and the three parameters below that.
Didn't get any of it with other guitar apps, or that I noticed through speakers.

Strange . But it's not very good. Try asking the developer.
Anybody else on iPad3 (or iPad2) have issues with the EVH5150? I think I mentioned about how my iPad2 will not play it under any circumstances. It's a crackly mess.
Also, do you guys find that the oversampling makes a big difference in quality? I had one play session where I was much less impressed than I had been before, but remembered afterwards that I had the oversampling completely off.
@StormJH1 said:
Oversampling helps reduce aliasing .
The maximum values for iPad 2,3,4 - 2x for all preamps . Only channel Lead evh not support an increase in oversampling .
On my ipad 3 evh 5150 works fine when other applications are closed .
High5denied,
Do I understand correctly that iriffport has two out ( 1 -headphones, 2- line out). And + iPad headphones out. "Auto pane" effect is the same in all outputs?
the iriff port does have two outs. When I use my headphones I use the designated headphone out. Never thought to try the line out. Guess I'll give it a go and see if that makes a difference.
@High5denied said:
And do not forget about the main ipad headphones out, if it also works when connected iriffport . I do not think that the problem will disappear . Perhaps this will help developers to better understand the problem.
Bump
Got it. Like it. Probably my favorite right now (I have all the usual suspects).
There's a setting for oversampling. Really goes to work on an iPad Air2
The more I use this, the more I am starting to like it. The "metal-ish/tinny" sound I was hearing disappeared in one of the recent updates, at least I didn't hear it last night when I was playing with it again. Got some sounds I really liked a lot. Looks like I will keep this one.
I found some sounds that I like but unfortunately, it seems like I can only load Amp One once. The next time I try to load it inside or outside of Audiobus, the splash screen flashes for half a second and then disappears. The only way I've found to load it again is to delete and reload the app which kills my presets.
I like it, and use it to mess around. Still needs a noise gate for my tastes. I can only imagine that it will keep getting better.

Disappointed after initial impressions. Part of that is my old iPad2, but I just don't care for the modeling as much as I thought I would. Fortunately, the app is small enough (about 1/10 the size of Angry Birds) that it can stay on my device, which is a big plus.

Amp ONE got an update (02/12/2015), and from the change log, it looks to be fairly significant:
What's New in Version 1.1
1) Improved performance
2) Improved sensitivity and reduced noise of preamps.
3) Added a noise gate with the ability to fine-tune its performance.
4) Added the ability to change the audio-processing latency.
5) Improved design for the Settings view. Added buttons to display a text description of a particular setting. Text description of settings improved.
6) Improved color scheme for presets and snapshots views. All views have same color and design scheme.
7) The user interface is adapted for reduced transparency (can be enabled in the system settings for iOS 8.0 and above).
8) Fixed performance issues on the iPad Air 2.
9) Fixed small bugs in the audio-routing and the user interface
I did not see it until late last night, so I didn't get a chance to test it. I'm chalking up many of the performance issues I was having to the assumption that it really shouldn't be used on on iPad2. But it'd be nice to see it work a little better. The addition of the noise gate will certainly be appreciated.
Anyway, the app stayed on my device because it's so small, but I haven't actually used it in the last couple of months. May give it a go again to see if things are any better.
@StormJH1 be interested to hear your thoughts once you've given it a work out...
Just bought all the bias expansions. I loveeee bias! Should i go for this one too?
As a bassist, I'm curious about bass amp models and how they compare, thanks. :0)
@JohnnyGoodyear - Here's a couple of quick samples to give people an idea. Usual disclaimers about sloppy playing aside, it's just a simple signal chain with an Agile AL-2000 (Les Paul copy) into Apogee JAM interface into AmpONE and then AudioShare via AudioBus.
The "AC30" one is actually one of the clean settings on whatever their rack preamp is (can't recall the name). It surprised me actually. The Dual Rectifier worked pretty well too and I can actually get 2 of the 3 channels on the EVH to work now, but not the highest gain one.
Also worth noting, these samples are with NO oversampling - there are options for x1, x2, and x4 (IIRC), but those seemed to glitches immediately on my sluggish iPad2. I didn't notice obvious quality differences but I'm sure they are there if you listen closely.
Anyway, I had fun with this the other night. As is the key with ALL modeling software, the key is really in the levels. Unlike with real-life guitar gear where things sound better "cranked", you really have to start at lower output settings on apps like AmpONE to avoid horrible clipping and digital distortion. These were recorded so the higher spikes were probably in the -5 to -10dB range into AudioShare, and the resulting quality was much better than when I had things turned up previously. You could also use a limiter/compressor, obviously.
Thanks for this/these.
Point well taken on the levels.
The 'sound' sounds somewhat contained, can't quite come up with the right word; as with most of these things depends on what the particular song/piece requires. For all of that I am trying to get past judging apps (especially output/effects) on whether they are The One, but instead if they offer some aspect that helps fill out the toolbox etc. Especially in relative terms of bang for the buck. Sounds as though you'll be keeping this one.
Thanks again.
