DAW recommendations for iPad.
I'm looking for a DAW for iPad. I want to record both audio and MIDI tracks, use external MIDI keyboard, GeoShred and other music apps as AU3 within the DAW, and want to be able to conveniently edit the MIDI (and ideally, also the audio for simple edits), and separately arrange the snippets I record into a complete piece with repetition etc.
Learning curve should not be too high. I started with Loopy Pro and realized that for me, it's not a good DAW fit, but I will still keep it for live looping.
What should I look at?
Comments
Logic pro, cubasis 3, Groove rider 2
Groove Rider 2 doesn't have audio tracks though mate. There are workarounds to that, but I don't think @des1303 is looking for a workaround DAW.
Cubasis 3 and Logic Pro do have audio tracks.
It all boils down to how @des1303 feels about subscription pricing. Logic Pro uses subscription pricing (but $5 USD monthly is definitely reasonable). Cubasis 3 is a one time purchase for the DAW and one time purchases for all its in-app purchases.
Audio Evolution Mobile (AEM) is worth a look.
This one too. I honestly need to learn the ins and outs of using AEMS once Jamuary is over with. 👍
How is Cubasis’ retrospective recording? Read somewhere it was easily thrown off if you moved playhead or something?
I tend to keep going back to Cubasis. Logic Pro doesn’t feel as natural as a touch workflow, though I’ve gotten used to it more or less. Usually I use that if I’m working on a Logic Pro project on Mac.
I personally use Cubasis because i been using it since the beginning of my ipad days, it fits my needs and i have most IAP. Except for the new pianos. How many piano does one person need ?
Dont forget to check out Zenbeats. It would denitively be my second choice.
😗🎶 I may or may not have purchased both, being that I'm a pianist. But I do agree that something like Groove Agent would've been far better. I can use Koala Sampler in Cubasis on iOS for a drum module, but what about Cubasis users on Android where a drum module is long overdue in Cubasis?
Are they any better than Ravenscroft or Pianotech?
I have used Cubasis since 2013, it was pretty limited back then but it progressed over the years and it can do everything I need.
I migrated over from Cubase on desktop. One of the good things about Cubasis is it can still use IAA apps whereas Logic Pro can’t, there are still some good IAA synths around.
Haven't tried them out just yet, but I plan to very soon. I love Ravenscroft! Such a warm sound.
Think I will sample that for my next piece of Ambient to be fair.
I'm glad you use Cubasis too.
And yes, it can use IAA apps. I wonder if AEMS can as an alternative to Cubasis. Any insights @espiegel123 ?
Let me join to the question, please. Can Loopy Pro/AEMS/Cubasis crossfade between elements in an audio track?
I sometimes record complete amateurs (including myself) and then I have to cut the audio to segments, move them so that they fit into the time grid, and also do crossfades.
This is probably the only thing I used in Reaper that I haven't needed on iOS yet.
@filo01, yes, they can all do that.
@des1303 - You mention GeoShred. Do you need to be able to record and edit the MPE midi from GeoShred?
Thank you, so I can stick with Loopy Pro for now
Ideally, yes. Just the timing would be great. I’m guessing duration, pitch, velocity etc are all more nuanced to edit with MPE’s added expression (pitch bend, dynamic articulations, etc) on sustained notes?
Any insights into Cubasis on this?
Anyone … Any first-hand (or other) knowledge to share on whether retrospective recording is reliable and simple in Cubasis?
While you can kind of fake that in Loopy Pro, if I had to do a lot of edits like that, I would use a a true DAW or an audio editor like Auditor for those sorts of edits.
I don't think there is any retrospective recording available on iOS besides Loopy Pro, I can't find it in Cubasis anyhow. Maybe I'm missing something(?)
Logic Pro has flashback capture for MIDI and audio. Sessions plugin host has Always-On Recorder for 5, 10 or 15 minutes (audio only). Dawnbeat has Memorizer that records pad events though that sounds more limited.

I’ll do a mini plug for my iOS host features sheet. If anyone has info on any other hosts with retroactive recording feel free to fill it in.
I don't think Cubasis 3 has retrospective recording in it. I Googled and searched. Cubase (CB3's bigger desktop brother) has retrospective recording. Perhaps this is a good feature request for @LFS . ❤️
@jwmmakerofmusic I think of you as the de facto FL Stuidio Mobile guy - does that have any retroactive recording?
N-Track Studio is the only one I’ve found that offers all the professional features on par with desktop DAWs. Even Logic on iPad misses most of these features, although N-Track Studio’s UI/UX still needs some refinement.
None as far as I know. Then again, I've never had a need for retroactive recording - whether MIDI or Audio. 😅 I know some folks need it though. Again, it would be nice to have in Cubasis if Lars and team decide to do so.
Loopy isn't the best of that bunch for that, but it can do it. My first thought would be to use the timeline and to set fade-in and fade-out timing on the clips.
It would be clunky though. Sorry, I should have given a more specific answer concerning Loopy. It's correct that it can do it.
Multitrack DAW is also very good for that kind of work, but it's not a commonly used DAW these days.
@Jeezs : What features does N-Track have that Logic Pro for iPad doesn’t ?
I never got the point of retro active recording. I am intentional in what I do. What would be needed is the multi take management. I can’t remember the name.
I find it useful as an efficiency aid. I'm intentional too, usually, but I don't usually get things right on the first take. With retrospective recording, I can play until I get a take that I like, then with a gesture, "print" it.
This is faster and less distracting to me than having a bunch of takes staring at me and tempting me to mull over which is the best one. Those baddies are gone into the ether.
Better integration with iOS, including:
• Copy and paste of audio and MIDI between apps
• Full iPhone compatibility
• Complete feature parity with the desktop version (no limitations, same functionality guaranteed)
• Much more flexible audio routing
