Song Of The Month Club - April 2026

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material

And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine.

My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:

    Cried again
    Can’t break the chain
And I’m as lost as I can be
I hate the way you are to me

    A moth to flalme
    When I hear your name
    Been burned again
    It's always the same

    Lies again
    It drives me insane
I need to learn how to let go
I should have done it long ago

    A moth to flame
    When I hear your name
    Been burned again
    It's always the same

  • Beautiful job as always, Richard. :) The mix to "A Moth to Flame" feels like I'm floating in the air. Beautiful lyrics too, and I can truly relate to them so well. I wish I could write lyrics half as good as you and the others here. ❤️

My entry for the month is an instrumental piece of music.

Speaking of lyrics, I wanted to write lyrics for this piece (and may jolly well end up doing so in the future), but at least I broke out of my comfort zone and went for something Metal. :)

  • This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Omnisphere for the lead synth, Vital Series: Mallets for the vibraphone and glockenspiel, Noire for the piano, and Continua for the background instrument.

After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.

    It's titled The Exchange.

Simply exquisite. :) Serene, and calm. Glad I prompted you to get over here, mate. I always look forward to what you'll post in SOTMC each month.

On my annual trip to that London to see the hold steady I met up with my mate Dave. Dave is a massive Orbital fan. He always asks them to play more acid. When orbitals 303 starts malfunctioning at a gig, they immediately worry about Dave.

The short version is Dave’s friends badger asks Dave to record his catchphrase and then more folks ask for the sample and it’s now on compilations and there’s a vinyl I think. The full story is at www.letory.co.uk

Ok so most of this is Tekno and pure acid. At one point my file botched so I was left with a rough mixdown. I basically chopped what I had to make it work. It’s got a sort of wonkyness that I think kind of suits it.

    More Acid.

@richardyot yeah this is really really good. I especially like the instrumental sections. Only negative is I felt it ended a little abruptly, I was really getting in to it!!
Mix wise, production wise I really think you can hear just how far you’ve come in a couple of years. It sounds cleaner? Crisper? Sharper? I don’t know. I don’t know if it’s arrangement, playing, more control of the reverb, panning..maybe all, maybe none. But the progression in monthly steps is noticed. You also sound so much more comfortable.
    Really liked this.

  • hey guys.. my contribution this month, which has just been released on all platforms i think now?.. A bit of soulful disco for ya?.. enjoy..

It's a high-octane track with an almost guitar-like riff and lots of rock elements in the arrangement. Love the dirty bass that comes in after the intro, it's a nice contrast. Lots of great melodies and embellishments, it's a mash-up of at least 3 different genres.

Nice backstory (although the site letory.co.uk wasn't reachable), and the sample is fun. The bass at 2'30' reminds me of Orbital's "Remind", appropriately enough :)

I like the timbre of the bass synth a lot, I always preferred the 303 when the squelch factor wasn't too prominent (even though that's what makes the 303 so distinctive). There's lots of nice details in the mix to keep it interesting, and the vocal sample is full of character.

I got your call at half past three
    You needed help so urgently
    And so despite our history
    I tried to help naively

    A moth to flame
    When I hear your name
    Been burned again
    It's always the same

And here we are we disagree
    You let me down naturally
And once again it's more fool me
I'm always there I'm always free

    A moth to flame
    When I hear your name
    Been burned again
    It's always the same

Just lovely. The guitar solo/riff duplicating the synth sounds awesome. The production is great, very balanced. I really dig the vocal treatment on this one, they blend really well with the instruments. Clear but not overpowering.

If this isn’t a soundtrack it should be, so cinematic.
For an improvisation it sounds very cohesive, the choice of sounds adds to this. It’s great 👍

  • @richardyot thats because I am a dafty who spelt it wrong its www.letorey.co.uk

I spent ages trying to get a bass tone I liked. My idea was that as the track progressed it would get more and more wild and squelchy.
Pure acid does do the low key thing really well so it was great for the progression.
The only issue I had was I couldn’t for the life of me work out how to get the sequencer to play a pattern. So I basically used a midi pattern for most notes while running the sequencer for a few higher ones and put the slides and accents on them.

Aside from the squelchy stuff I’m thinking of using it for more regular bass. The built in fx are great, it has a really nice filter and it’s very intuitive.

    This is a great track.
I’m no expert in this kind of music but I can definitely tell when it’s “cheap” electronic music, be it EDM, tecno, or whatever. Where it’s just formula and I personally find extremely boring.
This is subtle, it has layers, dynamics and movement. It’s engaging. Love it

    aww cheers dude.

My adhd is pretty much defined by the word boredom. I bore easily when things are formulaic. Lots of dance music is. My friends find it ironic that I love dance music but don’t find it boring. I find a lot of stuff boring, but weirdly it’s the stuff that shouts out loud how not boring it is. But the stuff I love moves, progresses, goes somewhere. Sometimes it takes its time, sometimes it’s not so noticeable but it has something different about it.
Anyway, to read your kind words means an awful lot.

  • I didn't forget to catch up. Just didn't have the time to do so. :) Hopefully I can catch up soon. Hopefully over the weekend and give my responses in one go on Sunday. Things have been busy af.

  • I accidentally posted this in the wrong month. Reposting here because I did this in April. In fact, I just did this yesterday.

I will now check out all your songs.

Richard, you have really got that 80s sound nailed. Are you an old dude like me? LOL. All kidding aside, this is really good. I can absolutely picture this on the radio back in the 80s. I'm still trying to figure out who you sound like because it's driving me crazy.

Man, I love that opening riff. This thing really rocks. It has both a modern and vintage feel to it. It's like you combined the best of both worlds. I don't know if that was intentional but it works. Very well done, as usual. Hey, and it even has a title. LOL

Time for David English and my morning meditation. Man, I just love your stuff. It is so relaxing. Something I definitely need these days. Very well done as always.

I do have one question. Have you ever done any hard rock? LOL

Thanks for the reviews (both months!), much appreciated.

I don't have any specific influences I'm drawing on here for the 80s sound, it's just the general vibe and the choice of sounds.

One of my favourite songs from the era is Echo Beach by Martha and the Muffins, but I like a whole lot of post-punk and indie from that era, including bands like the Jesus and Mary Chain, the Smiths, and Pixies, but I don't think I sound like any of them. :)

The songwriting is solid, I think the melody is very good, and the words are well-crafted.

I'm not a fan of the AI voice, but I've mentioned that before :) If I approach this as a songwriting vehicle it works for me, the arrangement and performance are a means to an end. It could definitely be improved with a real (as opposed to sampled) guitar and a human singer, but the bones are there.

No arguments there. A real singer and guitar would be better. I just don't have access to either. Certainly not a female vocalist.
