Well, no. Though I have done rock-and-roll.
In high school (many moons ago), I played a Hammond organ in a band with three singers (two males and one female), two guitars (lead and bass), two saxophones (alto and tenor), a trumpet, and drums. We were a mixed-race band, which was unusual at the time. We did mostly Motown and Stax hits: Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, the Temptations, The Four Tops, Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, and Smokey Robinson.
One of our few instrumental pieces was Green Onions. That's how I learned to improvise. I played it note-for-note like Booker T. up to a point and then went off my own using his style and timing. So you could say that I learned to improvise from the great Booker T.
@squeals Very hard-hitting and dark Acid House. I love the "wonkyness" as you call it. I'm definitely going to purchase Tekno soon.
@studs1966 The mix is extremely clean and punchy, the music is very groovy and fun to listen to. I really enjoyed that.
@wagtunes Your track has a very 60s/early 70s vibe to it. I'm not a fan of AI vocals, but given your circumstances, I understand why you did it that way. Hope things get better for you.
thanks Jim, & bless your cotton socks!
Cheers mate.
Did you get a chance to listen to mine? https://forum.loopypro.com/discussion/comment/1464049/#Comment_1464049
Thanks for the feedback guys. Much appreciated.
Wo, that is really cool. Thanks for the background info. Booker T was awesome.
So much goodness in this thread. Well done to all. @jwmmakerofmusic and @richardyot great vibes and arrangements. @DavidEnglish loved the visuals, matched the song nicely. @studs1966 amazing production value. Could be a lost young Michael Jackson track. @wagtunes thanks for sharing this, I hear vulnerability and real emotion in the vocals.
Here is mine for this month, just released it on Friday. Made all on IPad in AUM. Spacewalk, DM10 for drums, SWAM Trumpet, Decent Sampler Worn Organ and Rist Piano from Fieldtone Audio. I rode the faders live when rendering it in AUM to give it more dynamics and variety. I hope you enjoy.

I will share a screen shot of the AUM project if I can figure out how to attach a photo. [https://drive.google.com/file/d/12r2uVt97isWTTtfrbfqfiDkGu5HOdYRc/view?usp=drivesdk]
This piece is really captivating.
It sounds serene on the surface, but has an underlying vibe of tension. I love how the arrangement drops out around the 2-minute mark and the trumpet shines through. It sounds like Jazz deconstructed. I love it.
@jwmmakerofmusic thank you for listening and your comments.
@richardyot excellent song, you are the master of that 80's sound. Thanks for the nostalgia.
.)
Cool track @jwmmakerofmusic, I would have been glad to have played some guitar on this one.
@DavidEnglish nice blend of instruments and interesting visuals ... and relax.
Nice one @squeals. Haven't really listened to acid house since the 90's, so thanks for another trip down memory lane.
@studs1966 the rhythm section is so funky, and cool vocals, well put together. (60 years young this year, too
Good song/lyrics @wagtunes. I agree with @richardyot, would sound great with a real band - some forum members, myself included, do collabs.
Beautiful piece @Mojotele65. The displaced melody notes give this feeling that I'm not quite sure where '1' is, nicely done.
My contribution has the working title 'Cheese and Macaroni' as it fits the melody here and there.
@pbelgium Still a great tune.
As I said, the beginning reminds me of "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown". And, we should definitely collab in the future.
Would be good fun.
Can always go for some Cheese and Mac. Sounds good. Not sure about the Bad Bad Leroy sound alike but it does remind me of something. I just can't place it. Anyway, cool tune. Has kind of a country rock twang to it.
great vibes and arrangement.
Great vamp, very enjoyable to listen to. The bluesy intro reminds me of The Doors Roadhouse Blues, and the guitar parts are all fun and engaging. Great playing, always melodic, never boring.
That intro phrasing reminded me of one of Sugar Ray's hits, happy and then you transition into something a bit darker. I think these last two songs of yours have been the most radio ready ones I've seen from you so far-- like stuff that I would have on my playlist.
Is there a genre you can't do, for god's sake?
Like, seriously, you are both prolific, versatile and your stuff sounds great.
This track brought to mind both early, much less pop and more metal Europe (the Final Countdown band) tracks and Japanese rock. man, do give writing lyrics for it a shot.
Beautiful. You're a great improviser, and a great mixer as well. Your mixes are always perfect.
Nice. A little like Crystal Method, which I love. Hypnotic.
Love the funky guitar and bass, and a great vocal melody. Also love the vocalist's timbre. This is exactly the kind of song that would get my attention at the club.
I'm going to dig out the Night At The Roxy seal of approval again:
This feels like a very mature singer-songwriter track. I love the instrumentals and I like that the vocal choice sounds like an older woman-- it's a fitting choice.
Love the ambience and the jazzy percussion while the main melody floats over it. Nice mix too.
I'm a fan of your work. Always nice guitar lines with great tones, and this one is no exception. I say keep the title. I think it's great.
😂 That made me chuckle in a good way. That means a lot, mate. You honestly should see some of my threads from 3-4 years ago when I was asking this forum how to do "this" and "that", and eventually learned how to start actually listening to music to absorp it instead of reading interviews and checking Equipboard to see who used what. It's all thanks to God for this gift (music creating and performing always came naturally to me, whereas visual arts have not lol), and to this lovely forum as well for the wealth of information and support I've received over the years.
Thanks again so kindly! That's incredibly humbling. 😳 Not gonna lie - I sometimes churn out a stinker here and there. My track from early last month, "Clubbing at 2am", for instance is such a stinker. The drums have no punch, and the melodic ideas are just "meh" at best. 😂 Some people did enjoy it, so I'm not saying the track is pure rubbish, but my inner critic is like, "Well, you gave it your best shot, Jim, but you can always do better next time."
Sweet goodness, I love that.
I love Europe and Japanese rock. Lyrics writing is not my strongsuit, so I guess there is something in music I don't do all that great. 😂 It's the poetry. I always joke with my rapper friend Malleous that between the Doctors, I rhyme like Seuss, not Dre.
Right now, I'm listening to and absorping BT's "This Binary Universe", deconstructing it in my head, and gaining new ideas to try out in Gadget. Hope to have something stellar to contribute to next month's SOTMC!
Anyways, I'm looking forward to any further later entries for this month's SOTMC. I love listening to everyone's music.
@AlexY thanks for taking the time to listen and write all those reviews, that's really kind.
With that title I was expecting something that was going to make me feel uneasy. What I found was something very relaxing, not that that's a bad thing. Just wasn't what I was expecting. Anyway, it's very well done. Love the soundscape. Nice selection of plugins there. They work well together.
@wagtunes Thank you for listening and I am glad you liked it.
I called it Restlessness as it is the feeling that I get when that part of me has the urge to create something and it won’t quiet until the thing takes some form. Then keeps calling until it feels complete.
@richardyot
Love the wall-of-sound mix here where the music seems to swirl around in your head. The vocals feel especially relaxed and personal in this one.
@jwmmakerofmusic
Not normally a fan of Metal (big surprise), but this one stays interesting throughout. Lots of musical trinkets thrown your way, along with a strong, driving beat. Great sounds, too. That raspy metal lead guitar is amazing.
@squeals
Nicely low key. Almost meditative in tone. It’s sprinkled with musical flavors that simmer and bubble up to the surface. A soothing stew of a song that’s spiced with unusual combinations of ingredients.
@studs1966
Your songs are smoothly polished with the kind of care and instrumentation that we associate with top-notch productions. The vocals are especially strong with this one.
@wagtunes
Surprisingly touching tale about how people can change over time and grow apart from each other. Well-expressed both in the lyrics and the folk-music approach to the subject.
@Mojotele65
Intriguing piece that’s kind of an ambient-jazz hybrid. I like how it will sometimes shift to allow the melody to breath in solo mode. Very cool.
@pbelgium
The opening feels old-style rock-and-roll with a nod to the 1960s Ventures. It then seamlessly leans into a more grunge-like style. Excellent sounding guitars, too.
Thank you David.
Glad you dig it, mate. Not sure I'll have an entry for SOTMC tomorrow or not. However, I'm looking forward to hearing all of your entries, especially yours.
@DavidEnglish
Thanks so much for taking the time to listen and respond. This is a truly great community we have here.
Absolutely agreed.
Nice metal crossover vibes here. Ma boy brought beats. You can’t help but make it dancy can you? 🤣
I can easily see it working with vocals. There plenty of room for a vocal melody and it’s structured clearly. Maybe have to remove a few claps to make room but the bed of the song is right there.
I don’t know if Enter Shikari ever made it your way, but they had a similar vibe. More melodic singing dancy metal than the sort of rappy singing metal lol.
As for Tekno. It has some of the hardest kicks going. There’s other good stuff too. But I do find it frustrating. Some presets run some sounds by note, then others by freq, which isn’t a big deal with my big ears but the fader is tricky
But overall, if all it did was give me a big loud kick even when I fade it to -9db and it can still kick your teeth in. Or just give me a great rumble, it’s worth it for me.
@mojotele65 well this is just a thing of mellow beauty. I have some of them apps and I can never make anything sound this lovely but slightly tense and haunting. Very nice, very evil.
I love decent sampler but it doesn’t love my iPad or my workflow. I think it gets jealous of my other apps.
@DavidEnglish thank you so much. Because my files got ruined it changed how I’d work. It’s probably for the best. I would have over complicated it. I’m not one of those people who gets an idea and follows it through. I find the track tells me where it’s going. I never imagined it in those terms, but a bit of distance and I see what you mean.
Thanks @squeals I really appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment. I enjoyed making that one.
I'll definitely check them out.
Thanks mate.
Nice!
Then I'll give Tekno a go.
Sorry, forgot to reply to this. It’s a pleasure when I can find the time to do it. Listening to others’ work helps motivate me!
