  • Haven’t bought it yet but having just watched the demo video (thanks @Gavinski), if I’ve understood it correctly, it would be great if the Mosaic mode had the option to enter your own sequence of notes/intervals which would be used via a mini sequencer/note selector or live MIDI input (not pretending I know how such a thing would be best implemented!) to make the most of what the mode is doing. Just thought I’d suggest it @ianjojo in case you’re looking for feature requests!

Looks like a very impressive app. Even within a crowded market place for granular apps, it seems to manage to offer some unique approaches. Congratulations on the release.

Thanks! I feel quite proud of it. There have been three walkthroughs posted, one by Doug from the Sound Test Room, one by Gavinski and one by Fieldtone Audio and what makes me happy is that each video seems to let the user's own personality and vibe and tastes come through. It makes me very proud and happy to see and hear.

Your idea is a cool one! Because you're right, right now the Mosaic mode is limited to four chordal shapes. Let me think on this. I do indeed love suggestions from users/musicians. It truly always makes the device better if I'm able to implement them.

I've probably got all the granular FX apps, but this one is giving me very usable, musical results quickly via the old random button, and I'm being rewarded with the weirder stuff when delving deeper manually.

    Definitey recommended.

That's nice to hear. I'm such a sucker for a randomize button. I did try to tune this one so that it's not truly random (ie: weird discordant pitch settings and such) but I did leave a little room for the randomizations to also occasionally get a bit out of hand.

Yeah, very solid results, which is great for quickly flicking through for an unexpected, but usable result.

Any chance of a random button on the Mac version....?

I think its begging for it at this point! On my list for sure.

Happy to report that I've addressed the low contrast top bar menu (UNDO/REDO/etc) with version 1.0.5 which should be live now or soon in the app store. Now I'm looking into these interesting ideas of possibly having the user interface resize when large enough/fullscreen to allow me to use the entire 4:3 space available. A very cool idea, thank you all.

Appreciate your presence and participation on this forum… I bought Celestine and if this keeps up I’ll be buying all your other app as on here as well .

  • Same @Telstar5

Awesome dev and Celestine has become my favorite granular. The X/Y pad is fantastic, the animations are gorgeous, and it's just a fun app to use. Really worth checking out if you haven't even if you think you have your granular options covered. It really is bad ass.

  • I wasn’t sure what this had to offer over my other favourites (Silo, GRFX mainly) but I couldn’t resist. Super cool and playable. Great for shimmery beautiful stuff, but it can do a lot more. Definitely reminds me of Silo but has its own character.

  • I was very hesitant to get yet another granular… I love pretty much all of them that I have, but felt like I’m way too saturated with granular options.

However, I want to get something fun to explore in the $5 range that wasn’t a huge file size.

In the first 3 minutes of just playing with stand alone feedback… WOW 🤩 This thing is awesome 😎

Thinking about Traverse too, but not sure if that’s a “fun” one, but I do love the AD beautiful interface design. This one is beautifully designed as well!

  • @ianjojo Is there any chance that you could add a “hold” function on the x/y pad? I’m getting some great sounds, but then I can’t tweak any knobs or do, well, anything else because I have to keep my finger where it is! Would be great if I could lock/hold the x/y pad position, and then continue playing with other parameters…cheers!

Sorry for my slow reply on this, I missed your post somehow! I like that idea! Makes perfect sense. I've been hunkered down working on a big update for Celestine which brings the promised iPhone and M-series desktop support. I'll see if I can find an intuitive way to add this feature as well. Stay tuned :)

Does that mean the iOS version will be Mac compatible? How will that affect those of us that have already purchased the separate Mac version?

Yes, in theory, I can flip a switch and have the AUv3 iOS version runnable on M-series Macs. I don't actually love the implementation of this, as there are funny little issues like, for example, Ableton doesn't allow AUv3s to be resized (though Logic Pro does).
And there's also the reason you mentioned too - it doesn't make a lot of sense to sell the original Max4Live version for $19 when this iOS/Universal version is still at $9.99 USD in the App Store. So let me be a bit more transparent: right now I'm mainly working on the iPhone version of Celestine, as a lot of people have asked. That part of the update is pretty much ready for beta testing, while the M-series desktop version is more an idea right now but it brings up questions just like the ones you've asked. I'm totally open to hearing others' thoughts on this. I definitely see a lot of developers not offering their iOS devices the chance to run on desktop (at least without a separate desktop purchase). It's an interesting world, the iOS ecosystem. Appreciate you bringing this up and happy to chat about it further!

the M-series desktop version is more an idea right now but it brings up questions just like the ones you've asked. I'm totally open to hearing others' thoughts on this.

The issue for me personally, is that I've already paid (more) for the desktop versions, which iOS purchasers would then be able to use for free.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but that doesn't sit well with me, and it'll make me think twice before purchasing any of your future desktop apps.

No, I hear you and your feeling reflects my own thoughts on this too. I'm basically a people pleaser at heart so I'm sort of being pushed and pulled around a bit. I released the iPad version and people immediately started asking for a desktop version to be included. But I agree with your thoughts and it doesn't sit right with me either. I take feedback like this very seriously and this may be just what I need to sway things so that I leave this version truly as an iOS version (iPhone and iPad). My whole journey as a developer has revolved around creating trust with my customers, so breaking that trust is the last thing I want to do.

There's already a desktop version available, so they can buy that instead of expecting everything for free. Save iOS/Mac universal apps for future products if you want to do that. Trashing your back catalogue isn't great PR.

I can only speak for myself, but you would absolutely lose my trust if I've spent £40 or whatever on products that are then abandoned (I've also bought the iOS version of the latest app to continue support, even though I don't use it), and new versions made available for others for free.

Yep, I hear you. I appreciate you purchasing the iOS version even though you're not using it! I'm very grateful any and all support I get. This is very good feedback. It's actually quite refreshing. As I mentioned, the M-series release has been stressing me out for the reasons mentioned above and this feels like a great excuse to not bother with it and instead focus on the next update simply adding iPhone support (that's a whole other can of worms, trying to figure out the best way to present all the available controls on the much smaller screen). My original plan was to eventually build an entirely separate desktop VST3 version of Celestine, as I have received requests from a lot of people to be able to use it in other DAWs, so that might be the route I eventually go, if I ever find the time. That being said though, if I were ever to release a desktop VST3 version, I do believe it would only be fair to offer free versions to my existing Celestine Max4Live customers.

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this and I think this discussion has really helped me to crystallize how I want to move forward. ✌️

edit: Last thing, the original Max4Live Celestine is most certainly not abandoned! It will receive the same updates that the iOS version receives. I like to think that none of my devices are abandoned. In fact, I've been working on some updates recently to some of my much earlier devices like Plume, Polycrush 16 and Pummel. Cheers!

Well I bought the iPadOS version and would love it if you extended it to Mac AUv3 as I have no use for an iPhone version. Everyone’s different though so you can’t please everyone. Please don’t let it stress you out. People can take this stuff way too seriously. Best of luck with it all.

You're right, I can't please everyone! The real purpose of the Celestine release on iPad was exactly that: to bring Celestine to iPad. I really love the different feeling I get from making music on an iPad compared to on a desktop DAW. It feels less linear and I definitely end up with different results than I would get working in Ableton. And yeah, I never expected that people would want to use Celestine on an iPhone! To me it feels too cramped but I guess to each their own!
And as for a Mac AUv3 version. Yeah, it's a tricky thing to figure out the right way to do it. I don't want to alienate my previous customers of the Max4Live version. It seems that a lot of developers release an iOS version and then a desktop version separately. I looked into perhaps an in-app purchase to do this but that also felt a bit off. I will continue to think on this and I appreciate you taking the time to write and tell me not to stress too much! I'm good at stressing, so this reminder is appreciated.

Maybe you could buy the existing Mac version, you know, the one some of us have already paid 4x more for? Or will only a free version at the expense of those of us who’ve already supported the product please you more?

    Seriously, WTF?

Oh don’t be so grumpy. I would be happy for you if you got a good deal on a plugin or app, not mad that I paid more. Nearly everything goes on sale at a better price than what you paid at some point. Do you get all angry every Black Friday seeing those bargain prices? We’re talking really affordable plugins from this developer as well. I would be happy to pay for a Mac version but I also really appreciate the universal apps I have that run on all new Apple devices. Lovely.

Anyway, isn’t the Mac version currently only Max4Live? I don’t use Ableton so that’s not even an option. You’re being a bit dramatic about a non issue IMO.

That’s your opinion and you’re more than entitled to express it, however snarky.

Yes it’s great for you that you get to buy an iOS version that works better than the 4x more expensive desktop version, and then get desktop access thrown in completely free.

From my perspective however, I’ve spent £40+ on products that look like new versions are going to be available for others for free.

There’s another £100+ worth of apps that I had earmarked as potential future purchases. Obviously that’s now not going to happen. It’s not just about money, though obviously in the current climate that is a concern, it’s about trust, and with so many new ‘vibe’ coders popping up from the woodwork, trust is a very valuable commodity these days.

    @gusgranite said:

It’s not about that and you know it. You’re letting yourself down with cheap digs like that one.

    @gusgranite said:

Yes. So what happens to that one, when new desktop customers can buy a better version at a quarter of the price, with iOS compatibility thrown in for free?

  • Not to stir any pots, but I definitely jump at plugins more easily when they offer a Mac compatible auv3. To be fair they’re not as reliable or good to use as VST or proper AU plugins, but it’s nice to at least match a setup in Ableton from time to time.

This kind of thing I’ll more likely use with my guitar in more live / jam situations anyway (on iPhone/iPad with a pedal connector)

Me too, 100%. But I don’t think it’s a good idea for iOS apps to provide this when there’s an existing, and usually more expensive, desktop option already available.
