In some ways I agree, but with the caveats of AUv3 on desktop I’m not sure the value is there, nor the resale/guarantee that you’ll generally be able to back up a VST vs the ephemeral App Store, and mostly desktop plugins offer at least both Mac and windows compatibility, and more so these days even Linux…
The Max4Live UI is tiny, on my 14" laptop it's just about usable. Some developers include a 'pop-out' version, this one doesn't. AUv3 apps sit in the main part of the screen, many are resizable, but even those that aren't are more user friendly than a cramped Max4Live UI.
A £4.99 version of this app with a better UI, with Mac (Live and Logic compatibility) and iOS support will make the £20+ Max4Live version completely redundant.
That's great for new customers, but existing Max4Live owners will have a reduced UX for 4x the cost. Of course they can spend another fiver for the iOS version (which I did), but then their original purchase of just a few weeks earlier becomes obsolete.
Fair point for sure, though at least the m4l will likely work in perpetuity, I expect no resale value, though some devs kindly let them be editable so you can dive into the guts and tweak/expand or even just learn from…. Definitely tricky territory, especially when people feel invested…
Sorry to have opened up this can of worms! The downside of running a universal AUv3 in Ableton is that the UI is still not resizable. It's annoying that I can't have that sort of control over development. One of the reasons why I've been hesitant to work further on M-series desktop support. I also, as I mentioned earlier, don't want the Max4Live version owners to feel slighted. So I have no intention of moving forward with this universal approach. I do intend to release an update soon that allows Celestine to run on iPhones but I know that isn't something you're interested in and that's totally fair!
This whole thing has been an interesting learning experience. For what it's worth, I'm not planning on porting all my Max4Live devices to iOS (though I do have one port in the works - Augur). My future plans are going to learn from all this. I have some devices in the works that are iOS exclusive, without a Max4Live version at all. And I also have some devices I'm working on which are Max4Live exclusive, without an iOS release at all. For now, it seems best to keep things separate like that. Hope this clears anything up. Sorry that I've squandered your trust. I try to be a very transparent dev and treat everyone with kindness and I don't want anyone to ever feel slighted or ripped off. I'll DM you now and I'm happy to offer you a M4L device of your choice from my catalogue, just to leave a better impression.
And to all the other folks who have weighed in, I appreciate you sharing your thoughts too. At the end of the day, I'm just happy to be here, working from home, building devices that inspire musicians to make music. I feel very lucky. Cheers all.
@ianjojo just for my own learning: is the max4live version Windows compatible? Can its license be resold? I ask because those aspects have been used by other devs to justify price differences
Yep, the max4live version runs on Windows or Mac. It just requires that you have Ableton Live Suite - you can't run m4l devices without Suite. No one has ever asked about a license sale/transfer before (I haven't sold all that many copies, in honesty, I'm a relatively unknown dev), but I believe it could certainly be done with a bit of manual intervention on my part. I use Gumroad for selling these m4l devices, so I believe I'd have to manually go in and revoke access from the seller and then "give" access to the buyer. So a bit clunky, in honesty, but do-able if someone wanted to.
An AUv3 version of Augur wouldn't work in Live anyway, as it doesn't support AUv3 MIDI (one of the reasons I buy so many Max4Live sequencers!), but would make it available in Logic, so there'd be no crossover with that one.
I think making future apps universal is actually a good idea, it's certainly attractive to me as a customer on both platforms, as long as it doesn't negatively impact on existing products.
Just remembered I got Celestine as part of the gumroad bundle, still easy with whatever decision gets made on the old universal thing…
No need to apologize. It’s an interesting discussion and just business not personal. It’s a forum with real people so conversation can be passionate but it never reaches the KVR Audio levels of disrespect here lol.
I would vote for not keeping your Max4Live devices separate to iPadOS/MacOS because of one customer’s sour grapes as many of us don’t even use Ableton. Pricing and formats change, you win some you lose some. I hope as many new customers can discover your creative apps as possible. Best of luck!
I appreciate your resounding kindness and positivity.
Noted and appreciated!
What was that about ‘levels of disrespect’, again? If you’re looking for a KVR style row, I’m happy to engage. It’s 34 degrees here, no air-con, and I’m sharing a house with an autistic teenager smashing things against the wall.
I appreciate you sharing your current circumstances and genuinely hope things improve for you.
I, too appreciate your kindness gusgranite.
…and yes, you are a great dev, and pleaser. . Ianjojo.
Thank you!
I hope you keep it going because like ego said, your apps are special, beautiful, and super fun.
