KQ Tixie by Ryouta Kira (Released)

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/kq-tixie/id6754209839

KQ Tixie is a 4-operator FM synthesizer for iPhone and iPad that faithfully recreates the sound and behavior of classic FM instruments from the 1980s. Experience the iconic character of vintage FM synthesis with a modern touch interface, MPE support, and AUv3 compatibility.

FM synthesis generates sound mathematically rather than playing back recorded samples. Its distinctive character is heard in shimmering bells, electric pianos, basses, leads, and many of the signature sounds that defined the 1980s.

Features:

  • Faithful recreation of classic
4-operator FM synthesizers from the 1980s

  • Import SysEx data from supported hardware synthesizers and reproduce their sounds accurately

  • Includes thousands of patches
  • User-friendly sound editor designed for efficient patch creation and editing
  • Layer up to 8 sounds simultaneously
  • Supports MPE (Pitch-bend, Aftertouch, and MIDI CC#74)
  • Real-time performance controls for expressive sound shaping
  • Built-in effects inspired by the Yamaha V50 and Korg DS-8
  • AUv3 Instrument support
  • iCloud support
  • Patches edited in KQ Tixie can be transferred to DX-series synthesizers and the FB-01

  • So this basically replaces KQ Dixie (minus the DX7 compatibility)? Was it ever determined if there was any real difference between KQ Dixie legacy and the version released last year ?

I looks to me like not a replacement, but meant to be a less intimidating alternative. If I knew anything about FM Synths from the 80's I might be able to comment on which models he might be referring to.

Was it ever determined if there was any real difference between KQ Dixie legacy and the version released last year ?

No functional difference other than support going forward. I think it was all a bit of a misunderstanding. I believe the developer thought that an overhaul was going to be needed for future iOS version compatibility, so launched the new version. But that didn't really turn out to be the case after all.

  • I re-read it and the compatibility feature is referring to stuff done in Tixie being compatible to being transferred to the listed hardware synths . I misunderstood at first

  • I did find a draft-manual for this but is has no mention if the additional waveforms present on the TX81z are supported?!

Not replaces, complements. While early 4-op FM models were gimped 6-op, the later units had features not present in 6-op. In particular the additional waveforms mentioned by @Samu. We can but hope this covers the full “late model” 4-op feature set!

This is great! The other day I was looking for apps that emulate old FM synths that are able to import SysEx files (loads of them online). And it even includes the WT11 wind synth, can’t wait to play it with my EWI 🤓

    Love the name btw 😁

  • This reminds me, I never decided if I really needed that new version of "KQdixie 26".

Maybe I'll just wait for KQDixie 27

  • Can’t wait. One of my favorite developers - very unique and powerful apps, and very engaged and responsive.

  • Same. I just love this developer and jumped at the chance to support the new version. I enjoyed the previous incarnation for so many years that I happily grabbed the new one even though it had no significant upgrades.

  • Lucky me , Apple double charged me for a subscription and it got reversed…I now have a credit in my account so I’ll be able to get this when it launches unless it launches after my Apple Music subscription is due

Hmm, not yet in the U.S.

I’ve contacted the dev. Hopefully it’s just a hangup

It works if I go to the developers page ; I was able to get it that way

  • Not working for me in GarageBand; it lags to the point where I can only play a note at a time and have to wait for it to unfreeze. iOS 26.5 iPad A16

I'm sorry. I forgot to check my app with GarageBand.
The issue is because KQ Tixie has too many parameters. I'll add a "safe" audio unit for GarageBand.

    [double post]

  • The UI reminds me of Synth1. ❤️

  • Hi @RyoutaKira, just by looking at the app store page, I like that this has a nice vertical layout on iPhone, but do you have a screenshot on how it looks in landscape mode on iPhone? This will help me in deciding if I’ll buy this app. Thanks.

Ok sounds good….i kinda had a feeling that’s what it was because Waldorf’s Blofeld had the same issue and it turned out to be the same cause

  • Exciting stuff. As an fm nerd, this is an instabuy.

  • Can it do Lately Bass?

  • @busker said:

Yes it can, Mono Bass and Solid Bass too :sunglasses:

Got the explanation for the added ‘safe’ AUv3 for GarbageBand but I do wish I could just hide it…
Ie. Only show KQ Tixie and/or KQ Tixie (GB).

  • For obvious reasons I can’t do an A/b comparison but which parameters are lost in the safe version?

  • So, does anyone care to do a simple Tixie vs Dixie feature comparison? Which is most feature-rich?

Does Tixie have multi-out, for example?

  • edited June 19

Working nicely in GarageBand now. Haven’t figured out how to import sysex files yet but editing patches feels much easier now .

Thank you @RyoutaKira for the quick fix! And thanks to family sharing my wife’s gonna have a lot of fun too as she’s quite fond of Dixie

OK, so I'm up for getting this even if I don't end up using it much. But I'm really curious why I would use it when I already have KQ Dixie.

    Any thoughts?
