That's pretty smooth!
I took the free, older-version route because (along with getting to keep the synth on my PC past the trial period) there's a very cool free Virus mod (Virus waveforms and hundreds of patches) available for that older Z3ta...
Though now that I've heard your method, might go after these patches too!
...
Oh man, these comments have given me a Z3ta plus sized itch.
Two questions.... Watching Discchord Tim's Lets play video, he highlighted an annoying need to scroll slowly one by one through some parameter values such as octave. Is this still the case?
Also, Z3ta's midi implementation has been mentioned as a weak point in the past here. Was this improved since?
Cheers.
The midi issue was sorted out in an update- at least for my uses: channels are selectable now and Z3ta is cool via virtual midi, and flows via IAA and AB, with good results.
The only issue I've had with performance in both IAA and AB are crashes when using big patches (high polyphony, 6 waveform pads), this on iPad 4.
Having said that, now I can't get it to crash...I posted earlier here somewhere, and emailed with the developers, about a factory patch that always crashed the synth. There are a couple that do that.
As for the gui, that octave setting was a pain in the ass until I realized it had been updated to touch-drag...the general comment I have about the gui is that an ideal touchscreen re-do of the interface would add 5 pages.
Great, thanks for the info @Littlewoodg I saw touch-drag mentioned on the store description and was hoping it had been applied to the awkward areas.
Trigger finger engaged.
I went with iSem but the mash up of app types in the app list make this difficult. Egoist and Thumbjam are top notch but really have nothing to do with each other (or iSem).
I could of sworn that originally the thread title / post said "best synth" (no mention of samplers).

Your comments made me laugh big-time man..
You will not regret buying this awesome synth at full price. I really hope Thor gets updated like Z3TA.
I don't get how TJ is not thought to be a synth here. It play samples, yes, but so do several other candidates, and nobody pooh-poohed them. Or (as happens quite often) I'm just being dumb?
@dwarman I'm not pooh-poohing anything. Was only saying that I think the results of this poll would be more interesting if it were limited to synthesizers/non-sampers (so no egoist, samplr or thumbjam).
Only in context of this poll, mind. ThumbJam for life.
Thumbjam for life....
Not a tattoo kinda guy, but that one would be a good conversation piece.
@dwarman - synthesis involves combining and changing sounds; like a simple square wave into a lush evolving pad. Thumbjam just plays back samples (and does it extremely well), there is no change taking place. The term 'synth' is often misused on this forum. I probably wouldn't consider Egoist or Sampler proper synths either, but I can see where they are arguably so. I also think that this poll was poorly executed. Good intentions, but not well thought out.
I'm learning about some new synths from reading this thread.
Regarding ThumbJam I titled the poll favorite synth or sampler. ThumbJam is a sample player. I should have had it as a third category.
My only criticism of the poll is I want to bring a synth, and a sampler, and my TJ to my desert island. Today companions to Thumbjam would be Z3ta +, and Beatmaker 2. Tomorrow, companions to TJ probably will be MultitrackStudio and Cube. Dammit now there's another criticism I have of this pol, I dont want to chose
edit
Thumbjam is just an amazing app. Even if we disqualify all sounds except the synth patches, it is still quite good just for the playability.
and thinking of it that way, Bebot would actually be on the list too, especially if it came with more capability to tweak the synth engine.
I guess my point is that playability and fun factor are pretty important on my list. Thats why Animoog got my vote here: it was fun, and somehow easy for me to learn, but also a powerful sounding synth.
Since a lot of people on this forum praise Thumbjam (and are giving it high marks in this thread)...am I missing something? It seems like a fairly well designed ROMpler for iOS, fairly ideal for performers and songwriters. I'm more of a programmer/synthesist/sound designer/sequencer, and it just doesn't really resonate with me, but I've only given it a cursory look.
I don't think you can entirely exclude samplers either, as sampling is a part of synthesis, but some apps are essentially full on synthesizers based around sampling, like Grain Science, where whatever samples you load in act more or less like oscilators to be effected by the rules of synthesis, or the old Akai rack units like the S900/950. But ROMplers are often (but not always, like the Kawai XD-5, which uses PCM/single cycle waves but can be tweaked like a synth) more or less static recreations of desired sounds that use samples instead of waveforms, digital recreation (VA, etc) or traditional synthesis. It's a few steps removed, and that creates a sound that is more homogenized. Great if you just want a drum or piano sound to write or play something, but maybe a bit lacking if you want to roll your own.
Alchemy without a doubt!
It's a very close call but my vote landed on Nave, it's an inspirational way to create new sounds and just gotta love the 'Text to Sound' feature
As for true samplers there is no fully featured dedicated sampler on iOS that actually delivers...(I would love to have a built-in full featured sampler inside Cubasis).

Do you know Stroke Machine?
It is a synth/sampler/drum machine with 2 x 12 tracks for drums and melodies.....
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stroke-machine/id773218050?mt=8
http://appshopper.com/music/stroke-machine
.... not much talked about, but you can create ANY sound on synth page, or import your own samples and mangle them, there is a modulation sequencer to record tweaks, 4 FX...it is in a way a "small workstation"
I just got it, but the sounds/kits it is capable of producing are impressive...
Thumbjam isn't a synth, it's a (very good) sample player. Egoist does have a synth as part of the bass/synth element where you can shape a sound wave with filters and modulation. It's as much a 'synth', as Gadget is.
I agree though, it'd make more sense to limit the poll to dedicated synth apps, hence my vote for Thor.
Carry on...
@soundklinik
Good call. StrokeMachine is a great solve for the desert island question, having deep synthesis, sampling, sequencing in the one package, ultra-cool, a favorite workstation/environment, imho an underrated sleeper.
So how does Samplr be different than TJ then
@dwarman - I would say there isn't much difference and that Samplr isn't a synth either. Sometimes I get SampleWiz and Samplr confused; SampleWiz has a granular synth engine in it which puts it in synth territory, but Sampr only has a few fx (no synth engines).
