OUT NOW: Synth-Q - New MASSIVE synth from the dev behind the TINY 76 synth

Edit: Out now

AppStore Linkage:

synth-Q by Never Be Normal
https://appsto.re/nz/QOuO4.i

Just had a go with this beast of a synth. It should be out, but is not showing up the store yet for unknow reasons, so can't link just yet. It does things w/ the UI etc a bit different then most other synths we've seen. You kinda build your synth/preset by adding modules (3 oscs, FM, ADSRs for filters etc, modulation sources/destinations and so on), that you can rearrange and slide around. I'm still kinda taking it all in, but this is definitely a wicked massive (sounding) and fun synth.

Ok. Thanks for the heads up.

From their web page. "Microsite available 01-01-2015"

  • The dev told me (on Twitter) that he released it, and it is officially out. But for some reason it's not up on the store just yet.

  • @ChrisG You're scaring me a little bit. If you're quietly nonplussed how about us average non-robots?

  • Ah ok, I missed their new site @fjcblanco, so thanks for the heads up on that.

    It's : http://never-be-normal.com/synth-Q/

They call it a queuing synthesizer. Which is kinda what you do, you "queue" up new modules in a linear fashion, and scroll through it (like VirSyns Tera Synth), although you can grab them and rearrange it all etc.

Haha I'm a average non-robot. A synth-iot? Synthidiot? Hmpf. It got triangles, square thingys and such, that makes noise!

I'm all about thingys, might be my most used word in the English language...

  • edited December 2014

Guys, I'm having sooooo much fun with this one right now. (Edit: Seriously tho, it should show up any time now)

One thing you can do is having the keys move slightly in a X/Y behavior (like synthecaster but both axis). So you can for example tie filter cutoff to sliding the keys up/down and resonance (or whatever) to the left/right axis. You have up to 8 modulation modules, each with a source and a destination of your choice. Makes for some expressive, fun, sometimes weird, good weird, playing/sounds. :)

  • Another thought on this synth. The UI can definetely be very busy at first, until you get used to the everything-on-one-screen / scroll horizontally design. After a while it starts to make sense tho, when you get the hang of all the touch gestures etc.

One thing that you can make really, really un-busy is the keys. You can zoom freely from 5 keys up to 76 (if my math is correct). And make it full screen, which is really great (fun) on a synth that also lets you move around the keys in a x/y manner.

  • That really should be thingies. Thingys looks too much like classic Greek.

You're absolutely right. We only ever spelled it thingies in my hardscrabble terraced-house-without-even-a-roof growing up. Just presumed that that @ChrisG bloke was a posh git and I was desperately trying to fit in...typical failure of the working class as regards lexical self-confidence on my part. Apologies.

  • So how much it cost and any videos and sounds yet ?

Ha, it shows up on the AudioBus compatible app list already, but the App Store link is still dead. Must be soon.

Here's a synth-Q video and another. There seems to be a whole lot going on here.

Holy crap. My iPad2 started smoking just playing the YouTube video of that app. Also my brain hurts from the amount of stuff he dragged around an connected in about 105 seconds of video.

So this is basically a modular synth then, right? It doesn't look like a modular interface, but the way he was combining oscillators, LFO, effects, etc. and connecting them certainly looked and felt modular.

  • Mmmmmmmm, niceness.......20 seconds into the 2nd vid & I was sold on it.

  • edited December 2014

Yea, you can connect things left & right, kinda building your own synth/preset thing. I'm not sure why it's not up on the store yet. Latest Intel from the dev on Twitter is that it should be up, but isn't for some reason. I'll see if I can get some more info on it, or perhaps the dev is here somewhere and can chime in.

Btw, things like easy preset sharing online is one of the things the dev mentioned as a potentially upcoming feature. It does the regular open in and itunes thing for now tho

  • I'm wondering if the dev didn't make it available in the US store and didn't realize...

  • edited December 2014

I checked the NZ store yesterday, via AppZapp, and it wasn't on that one either. I did dl from the U.S. Store tho, w/ a code. But, it was a shiny willy wonka code, glowing and stuff..,I dunno...

Edit: it's out in NZ now actually. So when it's 2015, and the robots from the future are taking over your country, Synth-Q will also be available .

  • Awesome :D Thanks for the info!

  • Hard to believe that 15 years ago today people were actually stockpiling generators, canned food, etc preparing for the destruction that was y2k...

That being said, from the videos this doesn't look like an app for me, but I look forward to seeing what people do with it.

Only very silly people, the rest of us were getting drunk as usual.

Don't think this is the synth for me, looks like it'd take years to get a sound going and by the time I'd lined up enough oscillators and modulators and things my iPad would crash.

I'll buy it of it's less than one pound though.

  • Aaagghhh! So. Much. Synthpatching. Eyes. Melting. Metalhead. Need... Presets ;)

  • jg steps quietly to one side in an unusual show of discretion, pushing his sharpened uncut fingernails into the flesh of his hand all the while to focus his mind on some other pain separate from the thwarted buying instinct....

  • If you're really hot to get the app, you can switch to the New Zealand App Store. Not sure if the purchase would go through though.

  • Pretty sure Apple prevents that.

  • edited December 2014

Here's the process you'd need to go through to change it. If you're in the U.S. you can switch to the New Zealand store and read the descriptions. Given the current price of other apps and synth-Q on the New Zealand versus U.S. store, it looks like it will cost about $5 in the U.S.

Haha! I was on a gig that night, I remember it well. And I most definitely did not buy any y2k supplies.

Likewise on the synth though, that many options makes me confused and prevents me from making any actual music. But, my standard disclaimer is that I primarily play live and record live bands, so for someone doing more electronic based music this may be a gold mine. I'm really mostly into synth bass, so apps that do that well appeal to me. Long evolving soundscape type patches are cool and I enjoy listening them a lot, but I don't make music that utilizes anything like that. 76 synth does sound good though, so I assume the developer continues that tradition with this synth.

  • that's an awful lot of synthesizer for 5 bucks. Maybe too much?

  • Still not for sale here - I'll have it at that price, if it appears before we get hit with the new tax increases.

  • I think 76 synth is under-rated. I'm glad to see the dev branching out.
