Your nominees for iOS music app Developer of the Year

edited January 2015 in General App Discussion

Thought this would be a cool thing to do: come up with an AudioBus Forum iOS Music App Developer of the Year.

Step One: Post nominees here, up to three per person. Say a little about them if you like, or just list them.

Step Two: I'll take the top 5 nominees (total times nominated, with all ties for 5th being included) and create a poll for people to vote on for the official winner.

Step Three: Developer who wins the most votes in the final poll gets to bask in the warm fuzzy feeling of being The 2014 AudioBus Forum iOS Music App Developer of the Year.

Qualifications for nominees: Developers must have at least one music app released last year, or at least one update in the 2014 calendar year. In other words you are not only nominating developers of apps released in 2014, but also things like support in general and new features added to app. Hence the award title Developer of the Year and not App of the Year.

Prize for winner: Aforementioned warm fuzzy feeling.

Nominations can be made now through Tuesday, January 6th at Midnight Pacific Time USA. At which time I will tally up the nominations, take the top five and create the final poll. Roughly a week's time should be enough to thoughtfully nominate worthy candidates.

Here are my nominations:

  1. Korg- Gadget, nuff said.
  2. Kymatica- Sector and AudioShare are integral parts of my iOS setup.
  3. Wolfram Franke- My underdog pick, for the wonderful synth groove box, Stroke Machine.

EDIT: I have updated the deadline to Tuesday rather than Thursday.

    O.k.

    1. WoojiJuice (Mitosynth, GrainScience, Hokusai.....and some more). Because it was/is a joy to play with these apps.

    2. Sonosaurus.... because this guy is awesome and his app(s) are classics and will ever be!

    3. Kymatica.... because he is another workhouse machine from outa space who spits out apps and updates regulary in high quality!

AudioBus team and Kymatica - because without them everything else is pointless

Apple for not so gently reminding us just how fragile and precious this platform is

  • Whish I could make a longer list, but these stand out for me :)

Christopher Rice (Holderness Media) - For all those interesting conversations and great apps. Crystalline as the favorite

Jonatan Liljedahl (Kymatica) - For spot on tips and tricks and kindness. The AUFX series in special and the most used app AudioShare

Sebastian Dittman @ Audanika - For SoundPrism (both Pro and Electro) and for being so available :)

  • Adam Kumpf - For Fiddlewax Pro and general customer support and responsiveness.

    Interesting game.

I guess we might need to add 'Unofficial' to The 2014 AudioBus Forum iOS Music App Developer of the Year unless the Landlords say otherwise...

I guess the next issue (sorry, got my pedant hairshirt on this afternoon) would be what criteria we're applying; skill, vision, responsiveness, attractiveness to the opposite sex (or just me).

All that petty crap out of the way, I would have to agree with:

-Adam Kumpf - For Fiddlewax Pro and general customer support and responsiveness.

    and then add

-The guy from the Midi Sequencer thingie, which I can't make the most of yet (my lameness and the lack of a killer video), but his response/rate -here anyways- is/was first class.

-The Loopy Masterpiece fellow for thinking into the medium term and figuring out the perfect balance between inviting us in and exploiting us at one and the same time.

None of the above are to do with design or execution particularly, but attentiveness and left field smarts.

Special mention to Christopher Rice (Holderness Media) for his sympathetic explanation of what it means to be a one-man-dev. Many will rightly vote for Jonatan, Sebastian or Sonosaurus, but I've always been an underdog botherer (but still feel the need to namecheck them :).

Finally, @tonappas gets the cool award for piping up for others....

EDIT: Essentially, for all my windbaggery, I agree with @Keebo as regards ....in my book, any dev who comes here and discusses issues and incorporates our ideas as updates are all winners.....

I actually don't even need them to always incorporate our ideas, just come by and listen, explain, discuss...

  • Tis a great idea. Adding to the warm fuzzy feeling perhaps a paypal donation to those who wish to donate to the winner?

However, in my book, any dev who comes here and discusses issues and incorporates our ideas as updates are all winners.

Thanks to our resident AudioBus devs for providing a place for all of this to happen.

  • Mine are:

Adam Kumpf - For Fiddlewax Pro and general customer support and responsiveness.

J-lid guy :) (Sector, AS etc...)

Korg - because big(ish) corporates need to be encouraged (and are needed if the scene is going to mature) and I think Korg have done more for iOS music than most.

  • It might be nice to have one for companies such as Korg, Sugar Bytes, IK Multimedia, Retronyms and another for indie developers such as Kymatica, Sonosaurus, and Holderness Media?

  • edited January 2015

    @YuriT for Xynthesizr

    @Adamkrumpf for fiddelwax

@Sebastian and team for Audiobus 2

  • @sebastian and team should really win it every year for audiobus and this forum TBH

  • This is a hard one. We're pretty spoiled by great devs with mostly great communication. "....in my book, any dev who comes here and discusses issues and incorporates our ideas as updates are all winners....." for sure.

That said, I'll pick three to play by the rules.

    • The Audiobus team for scaling an underdocumented iOS 8 in an unbelievably short period of time
    • J_lilla of Kymatica for constant quality
    • Tony of mSequencer for sheer force and great participation.

Adam of Fiddlewax would get my rookie of the year award. :)

  • More than 3 all top otch. can't decide. But

Tony for midiSequencer and his attention to us in its evolution.

The dev of MiMix for so elegant and simple a solution to a problem no-one really acknowledged, but now you see it in most of the AudioBus screen caps - without mention, just there. And it gets hardware outputs above the basic stereo accessible to boot.

FM4 for the first accessible FM sound design.

  • Geil Bremmers, hands down, for his incredible MTS, his relentless updating, and his close customer support.

  • Jonatan Liljedahl (audioshare, sector)
Igor Vasilev (Audio Mastering, Alti Space)
Alessandro Petrolati (iVCS3, Apefilter, Sparkle etc.)

Them too, hands down. Audioshare is the second necessary page of any DAW, MTS included. And like MTS it keeps getting smarter and more useful.

And as mentioned above Adam "Fiddlewax" Kumpf also, a very generous dev indeed.
And Michael and Sebastian, presiding over all.

  • Korg: For renewing my faith in iOS as a viable music production platform.

Audiobus Pty: For trying their damnedest to get closer to desktop functionality with multi route and state saving only for Apple to naff it up.

Retronyms: For an all round remarkable year.

  • edited January 2015

Giel Bremmers for his dedication in improving MultitrackStudio this year, and listening to and rapidly implementing customer' suggestions and fixes for bug reports.

sonosaurus for continued work and improvements to Thumbjam this year, including a boatload of free new instruments.

  • Anthony Saunders for his tireless work and improvements on MidiSequencer.

  • edited January 2015

Jonatan Liljedahl (Kymatica) for the continuing development of the wholly indespensable Audioshare, and releasing the astonishing Sector in the same year

Tony Saunders (Midisequencer) for a seemingly unstoppable commitment to updating and improving his app

Michael (A Tasty Pixel) For bringing user dialog into the heart of the development process

  • edited January 2015

    Jonathan Liljedahl

    Christopher Rice

    Sonosaurus

Mentions to Korg for Module and Adam Kumpf although I don't (yet) have his Fiddlewax Pro.

Of course I'm excited with Michael but he didn't deliver(:) and I bet he'll be on the top three next year so I there's time.

    Rej Poirier - Caustic

Best bang for buck music app on iOS

    http://www.singlecellsoftware.com

    Also - Jonathan Liljedahl
All of his apps are great

    The AudioBus team

  • Jonathan Liljedahi - mainly for sector which is mind blowing, but also for how handy audioshare is and all the updates

Alexander Zolotov - for the experimentation, depth of sunvox and how many platforms he supports

Mominstruments/Oliver Greschke - for how completely crazy elastic drums is, great drum synth.

Picking just three was very hard maybe a top 20, than again I'd still struggle, have been inundated with fantastic apps in 2014.

  • Jonathan Liljedahi - Sector and Audioshare - both great apps, good visual design, fluid workflow and great sound quality

Tony Saunders - MIDI Sequencer - for the developments in functionality over the last few months and the fact that good MIDI apps offer us interesting workflow alternatives

Klevgrand - SVEP, Vandelay and SquashIt - These got my vote because they seem to hit the ethos of iOS - simple design, they do one thing and do it well, no menus - just pipe some audio in and tweak.

I kind of figured "AudioBus Forum" was officially unofficial, because "Forum" implies the people who post here and not the AudioBus website itself. So I'll keep it as is unless there are official objections.

@1P18 I agree with you. That guy yesterday can be a hardass sometimes when he's got his work head on and it comes to legalities. As your attorney I advise you to ignore him completely...

I like the idea of an indie developer topping one of the established companies, and I think it could very well happen. Well, if not topping, at least making a good showing in the final poll and providing it's own consolatory warm fuzzy feeling.

I'm actually open to changes, this really is just sort of a loose little shout out to the developers of iOS music apps, to show appreciation for their work.

I may shorten the time to nominate developers, as close to week is a little bit long.

I was also thinking any tie would just just mean more than five for the final vote. I think that's more reasonable that just saying whoever was posted first gets the nod.

  • I edited the first post to include all ties for 5th. I also moved the deadline to nominate to Tuesday rather than Thursday, people should be able to see this and get their nominees in by then.

  • Adam Kumph
    Toneppas
    Kymatica

  • Alexander Zolotov for the strangeness, Audiobus developers for everything, and Sugar Bytes for the whole of the moon. To be honest though they all deserve a pat on the back for making music making music making so much fun. Except Retronyms.
