I had a CZ-5000 too - it was heavy and pretty cool. Not sure if I'm that keen to re-visit PD synthesis now though.

Cool. Although it's phase distortion synthesis, I like how the sound programming pretty much follows the subtractive synthesis model found as far back as Minimoog and still used today. The DCW section of the CZ synths serves the same purpose as a VCF section in analog synths (controlling timbre over time). Personally, I found it very easy to use, right out of the box (I already knew how to program an analog synth).

  • I have VirtualCZ on the Desktop so it's not a disaster if this flat out doesn't work for me.

I never did really figure out why the DCW is analogous to a LPF though. What exactly does it do? Guess I should read up.

  • Ah, and oddly enough Synth Secrets guru Gordon Ried wrote an article on it... in relation to Propellerhead's Thor:

  • So is it safe to say if you already have Thor, you already have the Casio in there?

Really enjoyed that article, dumbledog. I love knowing a bit more about how my gear works. Thank you!

Hm, I'm not entirely sure. I have Thor but never really got around to putting it through its paces, and I never touched the PD stuff.

@thus, if you really want to go down the rabbit hole you'll enjoy the rest of his Synth Secrets series. It's crazy theoretical/mathematical at points, but it's certainly instructive: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/allsynthsecrets.htm
