If I had $500 to spend on music making I'd ...
Just received $500 as a 50th birthday present from some family members. Not that I can't think of ways to spend it, but I am curious about how other musicians/songwriters/recordists might spend it. So, please finish the following sentence:
If I had $500 to spend on my music making, I'd ...

Spend some of it on music that can inspire me.
If I had $500 to spend on my music making, I'd buy a decent bass guitar, a Shure mic or two. And a nice midi keyboard. But that's just me. Like Flo26 said, you know what you want/need.
@supanorton congrats, I achieve my first half century next week and I also wanted to add a fairly significant piece of gear to mark the occasion so I have a similar (but very nice) dilemma.
I have the iPad Air 2 and I've invested untold amounts in apps since early 2011 so I am looking at hardware and in particular the OP-1. I travel with work so it will get plenty of use and ticks lots of boxes but I also find there is something drawing me to it despite considering some fantastic kit such as the Octatrack, Monomachine, Roland FA-06 workstation etc., HELP!!!
take my ipad for a weekend to a place the opposite to where I live now, go into the funkier part of town, find a loud Korean restaurant and see what happened next. Write a song about it.
EDIT: Unless you already live slap bang in the middle of LA and eat pork belly ramen for breakfast in which case Plan B (as yet undecided . I suppose what I meant was: Get out into the world, get away for a bit, see what comes up...
volcas!
Put it towards a shiny new iPad Pro the day it comes out later this year...hopefully!
....spend it on Beer and Twiglets and use the equipment and gazillion apps I already have
An important factor would be what hardware and apps do you own already. Whatever you choose should compliment or fill a niche that is not currently covered by your existing set up.
Buy Logic Pro X, a decent midi keyboard, and a decent mic. Might even be a few bucks left over for some IOS apps. Assuming you already have a Mac and iPad.
I like JGY's take here. Unless there's an actual hole in your equipment, consider using the money to pursue experiences.
That or sell something you have and replace it with a 20 year version. MIM Fender->MIA Fender, for instance.
I've been eyeballing the Martin X1-D12E. I've played four or five and really liked each one. I've never owned a 12 string and have always wanted one, but I wonder how much I'd actually use it after the novelty wears off. It can be had for $599. I know, first world problems.

Yes! That and the Apple Watch. I'm starting to imagine so many cool things the watch could be used for as a musician and a guitarist. I'm getting really excited about it.
What the hell just take a loan out for a couple more grand to go with it and get the ultimate production tool!http://www.vstbrasil.com.br/product_images/u/214/Korg_Kronos__78754_zoom.jpg
Spend it alcohol and drugs and use the hangovers as an inspiration for some trip hop tracks..
Cheers
Doesn't actually work, fyi.
See, this is why we need the +1 button.
Get the Kronos ,I'm telling you it would be the ultimate trip! And it does trip hop!
might not work for trip hop but it works for country!
Works fine for me :-)
for $500 get an mpc-1000, an old iPad, and impatiently wait for mod step to come out and get that, you should have $30 bucks left over for some records…. go diggin
Depends on what you already own, and which are your priorities in music making.
Personally, I m a fetish for hardware; iPads/apps are just a great integration (for now).
Said that, I agree with who suggested: volcas, Logic Pro....
I would go with an Electribe, or with a Yamaha/Korg synth with zillion of voices..... Perhaps not so twickable, but Great production and inspiration tools that you can integrate in a Mac/pc/iOS environment.
Electribe sampler? Or towards the iPad pro. Or just put it in the bank until you see something you really want. I would prob buy the beatstep pro
I agree, the new Electribe sampler will be interesting - eventually!!
What about thinking of an app you use and love and would love so much more if it only had _____ feature. Then, offer the dev $500 to sponsor the development of that feature.
Er'body wins!

If I received $500 in one fell swoop, I'd put it towards something that could stand the test of time. Because I'm starting from scratch producing music, the only mics I have are the ones built-in to my iPad, iPhone and Apogee One. I would buy a Beyer M201. Eventually, I would like to start purchasing analog gear like a Tempest and Analog Keys. After that, there really won't be any point to expand until I get my room in order with regard to acoustic treatment.
Good monitors, mics, cans, another ipad, telecaster
Yeah, monitors are the best investment one can make in pro audio...as far as gear goes. I'd love to invest in proper monitors...but experience has taught me that it's pointless w/o a properly treated room. That said, $500 would go a long way towards making a nice monitoring environment.
Funny thing is- once I start thinking about re-developing my music room at home, I'm getting away from what inspires me to produce on the iPad in the 1st place -mobility.
Anyway...carry on. :-D
Make it $20 and we'll all send you our favorite motivational saying as well.
I'd opt for a nice 88 key digital piano w/Midi out. There are a few good-looking models right around the $500 mark. I'm a shoddy keyboardist at best, but when I fire up a church organ emulator I want to pull out all the stops and hear that boneshaking low end
