Is a 16GB iPad too small for an iOS musican ?

Forgive me if this has been discussed before, but I'm new to the forum (and fairly new to iOS)

I've currently got a 64 GB iPad 4, I'm looking to upgrade to an Air 2, but I don't know if I can justify the extra expense to get a 64GB Air 2. I actually haven't done any thing significant musically yet, but I'd like to have the latest model for the more CPU hungry music apps (and for future-proofing).

Do people think I could manage with a 16GB model, if I was to use it pretty much exclusively for music making ?

  • Get the 64, or you'll probably regret it. Many good apps have a huge footprint. 16 GB, in truth, means less than 13.

  • Hi and welcome Igneous!!!I've got a 16Gb and is ok for the moment to me. I use Dropbox for my sample base and I've got Beatmaker 2, Thor, Neve, Nanologue,Beathawk,Imp Pro, Beathawk, DM1,Chordion,Thesys,Audioshare,Audiocopy,Figure and some audio effects.More than 6Gb free space.Looking to upgrade to Auria Pro or Cubasis (2?) in near future. I'm started in IOS two months a go and spent some time to find my workflow properly. There are wonderful apps, plenty of drum machines and synths in IOS.

  • I got an iPad Air 1 16GB - Black Friday sale (now it's my partner's iPad) and got an used iPad Air 1 128GB.
Well, you could work with some apps but when you start buying stuff like Sampletank or some others you will regret buying the 16GB model. So if it's going to be your music making machine then it's clear that the 16GB is not your iPad. I completely agree with @binxnood

  • Start by deleting everything you don't use on your ipad4. Use it for a week and see how much you add back again. See you much space you have left on it. If it's not at least 16gb go for the bigger air.

  • Thanks for the suggestions,

I should have added that I was thinking about the 16GB option with a minimal setup for using CPU intensive apps such as Gadget, Flux, Nave etc. I'm not planning on using the iPad for sample library type apps. (I've got loads of Kontakts Libraries on the PC already). Dropbox in a no-go, as I live in a rural area with a very slow internet connection.

  • it depends what you wanna do.....just playing synths? records ( multiple inputs/tracks)? COmpose?
    many synths are lightweight.....
Sampler (SampleTank....) are mostly heavy weight...>1GB.....

i yoused my 16GB ipad2 over 3Years with AB/Thumbjam/DrumJam/Loopy/Figure/Animoog....and it was absolute okay....
know i bought a new Air2 with 64GB cause i use this one for DJing with a Big Samplke Sound-LAB + Records

    it depends.....

Get the 64GB to be future proof. (I wish I could, i'm on ipad4 32GB)

  • Good advice here, it really does depend how and what you want it do, but at the end of the day, storage is similar to Govt. Budgets, you can never have enough!

  • If you're using sample based synths (eg IK multimedia), or if you'll be doing lots of audio recording (where you should really have a few Gb spare), or if you will be using a large iTunes library, then you'll appreciate having more space than 16Gb. My ipad 2 was 16gb, which was fine initially, but once apps like beatmaker2 and imaschine with additional sound banks are installed, you very quickly become limited. I regularly had to delete apps just to 'test drive' something new. I'm now using a 128gb Air2.

  • Is size 12 gonna fit my foot?

  • edited February 2015

It all boils down to your budget. Get the biggest you can afford. 16GB is actually ~12GB net. IOS and apps take ~3GB.
Or you will end up like me, (16GB/air1) using FileManager app over WiFi to up/down load samples from PC<>iPad or wireless HDD-which costs a lot! (and I got about 60GB of samples on my PC).

But you can manage, I certainly can, be selective with samples etc, i got only music stuff on my ipad and a few games...
if I did it again, I get 32GB minimum

  • @Igneous1 I don't know how big your feet are either (nods @supadom and then hits him between the eyes with a spitball), but the answer (for me) is you CAN do it, but why would you? Especially if you live in a dropbox-deprived environment.

Talent benefits from flexibility (not, in this case, constraint) and memory is all. Save the extra pennies, wash dishes, steal from your child's lunch money, invent a new birthday or just wait a while. The other guy -you in the near future- is nodding vigorously.

    And welcome :)

  • If money is no object get the biggest there is. I've always used 16gb because I don't use vast sample libraries or sample based synths. I actually find that space restriction helps me being focused on the few apps I use the most rather than jumping between the apps in an inconclusive way. The big question is:

How are you going to use your ipad?

  • I wouldn't do that @Johnny

  • Personally, I feel limiting yourself will be quite harmful if you want to expand into full-on iPad audio production. I'm getting by quite well on my 64 iPad Air. If you only want a small handful of simple apps, you'll be okay however. So it depends on your goals.

  • @supadom I have this gif that perfectly sums up insouciance (how I look) and fear (how I feel) walking quickly past your desk, but unfortunately since the New Forum I can't seem to load pictures anymore. Prolly just as well..... :)

  • I'm glad you're not a judge mr @JohnnyGoodyear or half of the population would be in jail for intimidation.

  • TAKE HIM DOWN!

  • Is 16gb too small.....? Yes, unless you want to be forever transferring files off your iPad.
My 32gb iPad2 is forever full. I have my beady eye on 128gb next time around.

  • 128gb without question

  • $30 will get you a wi-fi hub that you can plug any HDD or flash drive into. Audioshare can move any files you need to/from that.

So that will save you lots of money, but first estimate the cost of time spent shuffling audio files around. Over the life of the iPad, you may feel like $300 investment (bump to 128gb capacity) is a bargain.

Personally I went with the $30 "Hoo-Too" wi-fi thingy. works great

  • It really does depend how you use it. If you're working with ways you're gonna have to make sure there's enough space and take into account the size of the apps you're interested in.

I bought mine for control apps I've bought far more music apps than I thought I would and audioshare gets pretty heavy use sampling stuff and audio copy is getting filled up with samples so I have to manage my storage but I just wait until I'm pushing the 16gb and check app usage to see what's taking up space or remove an app I'm not using if I need to free up space for an Auria track.

I do have to keep an eye on it but it's not that bad with stuff like Dropbox, it's not like I'm shuffling stuff around all the time and at some point I'm gonna have to connect to iTunes or if u box so I just manage stuff then. One of those hootoo things seems good for storage cause one thing ios has is amazing fx and you'll probably want to process you're own stuff but actually trying things out on the iPad 4 seems like a great way of determining if the cost of the extra space is worth it.

  • I have a 32gb air 1 and I'm always fighting the storage space.

If you want to produce whole tracks (with samples) on the iPad then do yourself a big favour and get 64GB.

You could make it work with 16GB - but it will be a fight.

However if you produce on your PC and just want to add some iPad synths to the mix you might be ok. Or just want to use it as a live soft synth.

  • 16gb you end up having to delete and reload bigger apps when you are not using them, and deleting recorded audio in daw quite a but. I will definitely not get 16gb again but having said that have managed, just inconvenient

  • I have a 128 gb Mini 2 and I am REALLY happy that I got that one, wanted 64 gb initially. But this is just practical. Lots of ideas and recordings on it i can go back to without worrying about storage space. So if you can afford it - don't hesitate.

  • Many thanks for all the advice, I shall mull it over.

I currently do all my music on the Desktop, so the move into iOS is an exploratory one which I don't know how it will pan out. I wasn't intending to replicate my whole music making set-up on the iPad, just run things that are 'exclusive' to iOS. Money is an issue, especially, if I don't end up doing what I intended on the Air 2 - a primarily gadget based project and running Flux as a guitar multifx (primarily)

  • I'm leaning towards 64GB iPad Air 2 Wifi and use my phone as hot-spot when internet connection is needed and when I'm not near wifi coverage. My current Mini does have cellular too and I'm wondering if it's worth to get the cellular version anyway or wait for updated versions.

I've learned it he hard way, that the smaller the synth app is the more CPU hungry it is too since sample-playback is hardly taxing on the CPU, it just eats storage...

I've got a 16 GB Air, 37 music making apps, 8.2 GB used, 3.8 GB available, larget app is Alchemy @ 2.2 GB, and less than 1 GB is used for non music apps. I haven't run into storage problems, but I also dump all music I make on it to my desktop.

Get the 64GB for $100 more. It's worth it just to not have to think about memory management. If it makes you feel better, look at it like you are saving $100 while getting the 64GB version since there used to be the 32GB model that occupied that space.

But in all honesty, I'd wait for the next version if at all possible. There is some strangeness with the Air2 and the next version should be a good tell to get a handle on what the future of iOS holds for music processing.
