cool thanks.
Yes, thanks!
MIDI output doesn't seem to work for me.
Is there an update on the way?
I can't change templates...I bought the editor and downloaded several templates but clicking on them does nada?
How do you do it?
OK, working...need to push on the icons..LOL

1st time hearing about this app, kinda of a one trick pony but I like it..thanks.
MIDI does work, tried it playing Animoog and Laplace at the same time...
One of the best apps of all time, I try not to talk about it as it's so simply good
Yes, the midi control is a lot of fun, I tried it with photophone and it was worked very nicely!
Works seamlessly with everything I just lobbed at it (SampleTank, M3000, Oriental Strings) with nearly zero configuration. How refreshing
These midi controller apps are what I love so much about making music on iOS. ChordMapMidi is another great one like this, but much more powerful.
Goes in circles though. I was happy that TJ ran up so immediately in this and I do like the playing interface, but I wzs also then quickly back to playing the same instrument but better in TJ....which I wouldn't have even opened if it hadn't been Orphion. It all counts...
I also found another great app yesterday and is always free it is called Caelestis, and it sounds fantastic when played through Crystalline, it is possibly well known to those of you who have been creating music on iOS for a while but it was new to me and good bloody fun for such a simple app
Very nice app. I had a glitch where the settings menu was stacked but can't reproduce it.( hopefully ). One question : is it possible to set the volume of the layers? When striking hard to a pad , the sound is noticeable louder than the others.
Finally got it working with Thor, but really can't see any reason why I would use this, rather than Thor's own keyboard as it offers no extra functionality that I can see. In fact when playing it, hitting the circles with my thumb causes a loud 'slap' compared to quieter notes via my other fingers, regardless of how gently I try and use my thumb.
No offense to it's dev or fans but this really isn't for me.
Using Orphion as a MIDI controller is kinda missing the point of the app. It's an instrument in its own right.
Did I miss a whole bunch of options? As an instrument alone this would no doubt be one of the most boring I have ever heard. Would their even be a point without midi? It plays notes alright but I thought it was what you hear is what you get for sounds? Only one sound?
It is only the one sound, but it changes based off of how you play it, that's where it gets interesting. It can be plucked sounding, bowed sounding, etc. Those controls make it an interesting controller too.
Yes I like the controller aspect even if I could get the same notes with Thor or whatever You get them in a different manor with this. Sometimes it is just the change in scenery needed to inspire a new idea!
^ Agreed. And I like the chord 'structures' that you can set up and to some of us with fat keyboard fingers the interface can be a good melody developer, but -still- I understand why I liked this app when I first got it, but have rarely opened it. If there was nothing else I might write a symphony with it, but as I have a thousand other ways to skin the cat I am instead largely busy trimming its whiskers.
Criticism can definitely be valuable. It sometimes veers off in a strange direction here. Instead of discovering what an app can do, people work really hard to discover what it can’t do, and then they obsess over that particular gap.
It’s not really my job to be a cheerleader for Orphion. I must be in the mood for it so I’m going to do it anyway.
I’ve played piano since I was five. I’ve played guitar since I was ten. I’ve only played Orphion for about 15 months, and I’ve already been able to get some wildly beautiful music from it that I’ve never been able to get from a piano or a guitar. That means a lot to me. If you can’t get anything valuable from Orphion then don’t blame Orphion.
Guitars and pianos can do things that Orphion can’t, primarily because they’re guitars and pianos, and Orphion isn’t a guitar or a piano. Orphion can't do everything that other apps can do because it isn't every other app.
On the other hand I can line up all sorts slides and circular waves on Orphion that I’ve never even tried to accomplish on anything else. It’s possible that another app could do those things better. I haven’t tried every app. I haven’t even found them all. So far Orphion is the best thing I’ve found for doing some things that are worth doing.
Orphion is definitely a unique glass instrument. I like to use a different iPad for each hand and play different instruments at once with my right and left hands. Customizing the finger glides in advance makes that fun and easy to do without having to look at either screen. Like anything else it takes some practice to get good at it.
The thing that I love about Orphion is that it responds so well to a variety of slides and taps and wiggles and presses. I can see how people might be frustrated if they expect it to work a certain way that it doesn’t, but try breaking concrete with a guitar or try getting music from a sledgehammer.
As a controller instrument I’ve made Orphion sound like an army of attacking guitars. I’ve made Orphion sound like a forest full of birds. I’ve made Orphion sound like a small mountain town where the villagers have all gone insane. I love a whole bunch of apps and Orphion is one of the apps I love.
I've never been able to get the midi working right with it. To be able to control other synths.
Question: When I donwload other templates from the Orphion place thingy. It seems I only have access to them when connected online? I don't have my ipad in front of me to check it out at the moment. Is there a way to access the different templates with no internet connection. Thanks
yep, that's the instrument part of it, it's only one instrument, like a tabla, or a hang drum or….
yes if you've downloaded templates then they are on your iPad and stored within the app., first press the info icon in the lower lefthand corner, then press and hold one of the template selections in the middle bottom of the screen, hold if for a second, then release and the template preset menu will pop up.
Janie, you know the first rule about Orphion, don't talk about Orphion…. now we're both in trouble
@Janie Good passion! I shall hereinafter think of you as the Clarence Darrow of Orphion

I don't think that's the case on this forum, you have a particularly experienced bunch of folk on here who will give an app a good go and generally find the positives as well as give feedback on any bugs.
I wouldn't say I'm personally obsessing over the negative points of the app. But as I'm having trouble getting it to connect to some of my other MIDI apps - which isn't an issue with my other controllers such as Arpeggionome and Soundprism - and when I use all 5 fingers the thumb makes a louder note then it just isn't working for me as a basic MIDI controller. I didn't work hard to find the bad points, but if I'm struggling to get it to connect then it is difficult to experience the good ones.
OK. My kids are crashed out for the night so I’m back to proselytize. This time I’m going to be more specific about some of the things that I do with Orphion.
I can choose which notes I want to put in specific places. I’m a huge fan of being able to decide where I want to put notes on the screen.
I tend to put most of the notes along the edges of the screen, and in the corners, so I can use the edges of the iPad as a guide when I’m playing without looking.
A lot of times I run my thumb along the edge and I have the notes placed in spots where my fingers naturally want to slide or land. I sometimes have different runs of notes for different fingers.
I usually add certain groupings of notes in the corners of the screen. There are finger movements that are easier to do in the corners.
If I’m using different midi channels then I can do different things. I might add one channel to one corner of the screen and a different channel in another corner or along one edge.
Playing different instruments on one screen or two screens can be a lot of fun with Orphion. I wouldn’t say that it’s easy, but it’s easier than doing it with any other app I can think of offhand.
Sometimes it’s easy to change things around to come up with some arrangement that works well for the song. It can sometimes take a while before I get something I like.
Fortunately I can save the layouts that I’ve customized for different songs. Some of my layouts are just a few big circles on the screen. Other layouts look like some diagramed play for a sport that hasn’t been invented yet.
I can’t think of any way to explain the different ways to play notes with Orphion. It’s easy to do some things with it. Other things require a lot of practice. For me it’s worth the time. I like apps that involve a lot of finger coordination.
You're both right. Love it when that happens.
I am (me! me! me!) more on the @monzo side of the fence, but @Janie you are the sort of user the developers of apps as unique as Orphion dream of. And lucky you (along with the dedication) that you've found something that works so well for you.
