Out Now: Groove Machine Mobile by Image Line Software

edited February 2015 in General App Discussion

So anyone given this a spin yet? Does it support any iOS standards (IAA, AB, coreMIDI)? Looks fun.

I'll just slap the appinfo below...

About Groove Machine Mobile

  • Synthesizer: Load from the extensive library of bass, keys, lead, pad, sfx and synth sounds. The flexible dual-oscillator, wave-shape driven, design with filters, 3 envelopes and LFO architecture will ensure you can create fresh and unique sounds for years to come. Listen to the presets and you will know how powerful the Groove Machine Mobiles synths are.

  • Sample Player: Choose from over 20 multi-sampled instruments covering Piano, strings, organ, bass, guitar, flute, harp and more.

  • Drums & percussion: Punch out a beat on the 10 drum pads. The velocity-through-position feature will allow you to play with feeling to get the right groove. Layer two samples per-pad for complex sample mash-ups. A comprehensive library of percussion samples is included covering kicks, snares, toms, hats, cymbals, sfx and more.

  • Keyboards: Take control over the synthesizers with Groove Machine Mobiles two-tier touch keyboard, perfect for playing chords and melodies. The visual feedback will even help you to learn to play music just by watching the existing projects play.

  • Effects: A wide array of modern and classic effects are available including a Bit Crusher (for lo-fi gritty sounds), Flanger & Phaser (to create complex stereo washes and spacey effects), Filters (low, high pass & vowel-voice simulation), Delay (echoes), Reverb (to simulate the sound of large halls through to tight spaces), Panning (so you can spread your sounds across your speakers) and Ring modulation (creating screaming-feedback type sounds).

  • Sequencing: After recording a performance Groove Machine Mobile's touch-optimized easy editing features make it a breeze. You can edit in all the musical parts from scratch here too. The Piano-roll allows note entry and step-entry for percussion tracks. Finally, record and edit the movement of almost any knob or control with the Automation editor.

  • User sample loading? No? I'll stick with gadget and samplr then :/

  • There is no mention in either videos or user manual of Audiobus or IAA integration. I like the look of it, but it appears to be very different from the full PC version of Groove Machine, so I'm going to wait a while and see some decent reviews before spending £8 on it. I was stung on FL Studio Mobile HD, which was pretty rubbish, nothing like the PC version. Hopefully it's not just a limited , cut down, features missing port like FL Studio mobile was !

  • I've been waiting a while for this - snagged. I love it. Sorry off to play.

  • Looks like only way to get stuff out of it is is via iTunes.

  • Looking at the Demo. It feels like a Remixed version of the FL Studio Mobile HD, with the same sounds, but with better control? I wonder if this app, this is what is/maybe/could be, going to be part/ inside of Auria Pro(midi style of thing, that is?). I asume, it does not have IAA, or Audio Bus yet? But Image Line do update there stuff quickly tho.

maybe am i the only one, but i have the unpleasant feeling to see the same kind of apps again and again and again.same samples ,same workflow,to produce the same perpetual music..i find this really boring.sure, that's only my point of view.

I agree, same old same really - this app could have been created 3 years ago. I guess for Android users who can't run Gadget it'll create a ripple of excitement, but I really don't need another app that does what my existing apps already do, minus essential Audiobus/Audioshare/IAA integration.

Instinct is to agree, but will be interested to see if it has anything different/better and thus look forward to a report ( @Trueyorky :)....

  • I'll stick with Caustic...

  • The web site does say custom sample import is planned for a free update....

I think this app was created about 3 years ago ...... To run on the surface rt.
Where they had the whole music app market pretty much to themselves!

It's not really anything much like FL Studio Mobile though. But I guess some of the sounds are shared with the Various Image line synths etc for FL studio.

  • I like it, and the groovebox workflow, but yeah. User samples and sampling via whatvever protocol is a no-go for me.

I bought it anyway. I'm waiting for it for a while (after seeing it on Windows tablet).

It does support midi though ;)

  • FL Studio Mobile, well was a half-assed effort to say the least, but with the recent move to Mac OS, maybe, just maybe, they'll take IOS a little more seriously, I hope.

  • Does it midi out??

  • Midi in yes, but no midi out. Otherwise great workflow and nice interface. I hope next updates will include IAA, AB and ACP and eliminate some absurd restrictions: there are 6 instrument slots available where yo can load only 1 drum machine???

I really like it so far. I will get more into it later and see if I come across any of gotchas that affect me. I like that you have quite a few options on the synthesizers and the ability to select two samples for each drum item that you can balance between. I like there is an EQ for each instruments as well. Great to keep things from getting muddy. Score editing is a little tedious for me, but you can always just record and adjust.

  • Yeah, it would be good to see this in action.

Agree with the 'meh' comments for the most part. NanoStudio 2008. Though if it works on cheap Android tablets, that's something. $100-$150 for a competent groovebox is still a pretty smashing deal even if it's not one I'm particularly interested in.

I skimmed the getting started video on their site and would be interested to know from those who went for it how the two finger interaction in the piano roll works because it seems pretty clever to me: touch a note and drag a second finger up/down to adjust velocity or left/right to adjust length.

  • Interesting,
As a long time FLStudio user, I envisaged I would be using FLStudio mobile primarily when I started off in the iOS world. I think they're a very good company with very good technical support, but the app wasn't anything like the desktop version (I didn't expect a replica, as such) in terms of automation and other key things, so I don't think I'II be returning to it (as it is).

After using it for an hour or so, I have to say it really is pretty cool. It reminds me a lot of my EMX. It works well with my work flow and is very stable. There is a lot more under the hood then first appears, again similar to the EMX or the OP-1 for that matter. MIDI in works great for me, which was one of the issues I was having with Stroke Machine. If they implement Audiobus and IAA it might become one of my go-to iOS idea pads.

After using the score editor, I don't have many problems with it. I was originally trying to use it while zoomed out and kept missing the positioning. But you can zoom in via the bottom and left side for more precision. The note length and volume dragging is pretty good, but sometimes your finger that you put down to select the note blocks out the view of the note so that is is difficult to see how much it is changing, if that makes sense.

One issue that I haven't figured out. I can't find any settings anywhere for the app and it doesn't seem to have background audio!!!

  • Does it have side-chain compression? It sounds like it on that video demo.

  • It has a compressor/limiter that definitely pumps, but it doesn't have a side-chain input that I could find. I couldn't find where the controls were at first. You can click on the FX button on the bottom to access it and the master EQ.

I just tried connecting up to funbox and can't get to the samples. So you are stuck with the included samples right now for the drum instrument. You can tweak the samples quite a bit, but can't replace them. Fingers crossed that will change and without having to purchase IAPs of new samples....

Edit: just to clarify, the app comes with a bunch of samples so you can replace each drum in the drum instrument group with a different sample (or two at a time with balance between them and pitch differences, and a few other tweaks).

  • @Telengard thanks for the overview...

  • Couldn't care less about another"groovebox something"So,why did i even post here then?That's beyond my knowledge,sorry :)

  • Here is my demo and tutorial for it, I have created a separate video post for but its waiting for approval, is the approval thing new?
    http://www.thesoundtestroom.com/groove-machine-mobile-demo-tutorial/

  • Doug's video almost sold that to me, until it crashed...

  • A lot of this new apps need a lot of available ram. If u have a lot of stuff in the background, it can cause crashes.
I use a program called memory or something like that. It clears up a lit of memory right before I use these kinds of apps.

  • Bet your glad I left that bit in, in all honesty that is the only time it crashed while I was using it, and I'm sure it'll get fixed

  • I appreciate the fact your vids are honest and not spruced up to sell a product - I put a lot of trust in your vids and usually hold fire on a purchase until I've seen you using it in action.

I dismissed this app initially, but your vid has made me see the potential it has. If I didn't have such a decrepit pad then I'd be very tempted.
