Probably this
Surprised to see no mention of Depeche, who survived the change from all out pop, to synth rock.
For me, this was like listening to Sgt. Pepper's Lonley Hearts Club Band back when it was first released. Still puts a chill in my ears:
The breath and the depth of Isao Tomita' albums!
Don't You Want Me - Human League. I was in elementary school and MTV was brand new. I loved english new wave (still do).
Just can't get enough by depeche mode
Depends on your age - they came to the party relatively late for us oldies.
Maybe your correct, so something a little earlier, Jeff Wayne's - War Of The Worlds, again no mention, which surprises me, an album that covers rock and electronic music.
Absolutely. We remember early Depeche
was preceded by Silicon Teens
Which was all the Daniel Miller / Frank Tovey (Fad Gadget) stuff
(search the single version online, if your country lets you at it)
which was played on John Peel a lot
https://www.youtube.com/user/JohnPeel3904
which was all we ever used to listen to at night and listen to bands like
Young Marble Giants (here they are again, decades later, pretty much now:)
and bands that nobody’s ever heard of, like imPlog with their Holland Tunnel Dive:
which someone did a superb re-make of with stunning video, a few years ago:
and then there’s DAF and of course John Peel used to hilariously over-pronounce “Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft”
which brings us back to Conny Plank
and of course, while all this was going on we simply couldn’t ignore the interjection of DEVO
The stuff I was listening to pre-dates that, most of the synth stuff that first grabbed my attention was in the early 70's.
@u0421793 I remember Depeche Mode as they lived down the road from me! I guess that's why I don't consider them an influence - I used to try and beat Vince Clarke to the latest German electro releases at the local record shop. I'm influenced by their influences, if you see what I mean - Can, Kraftwerk, Faust, Cluster etc. Fad Gadget is brilliant, another early influence.
Virginia Plain -- Roxy Music
Frankenstein
Many of these bands/songs I've never heard of and I consider myself fairly savvy. Cool to have some new old stuff to get into. (Fad Gadget? What a cool name.)
Fad Gadget was great, though terrifying live. I saw him cut his head open once by repeatedly hitting it with a Syndrum
Another Eboman convert here!
Awesome! I was into A LOT of music, but at that time, I had never heard someone use an analog synthesizer quite like he did in 'Donuts' !
Page 3 and I realised is about synths, not keyboards...so Highway Star is an epic fail !
So my vote is for Kraftwerk - The robots
Does anybody know any of the back story to Kraftwerk's - The Model, it's the ending, wondered if if was intensional or not, the out of tune, notes that are held, was it the tape, the synths.
not sure possibly early human league or this ...
Neil Young's Computer Age:
And The Notwist:
Subconsciously Delia's Dr Who theme, consciously Moroder's 'I Feel Love' & JMJ's 'Oxygene' & 'Equinoxe' . Back then it was all pretty much just radio & thursday nights TOTP.

Frankenstein, Baba O'Riley, Bargain, or Lucky Man. Not sure which of those I heard first because I first heard all of them a few years after they were released.
Front 242
Anything by 808state.
Popcorn - really surprised not mentioned yet...
Oh yes, very good point – I could probably have used that instead. Thanks.
I could say Telstar / Tornadoes, but I'm not sure that registered as “what's making that weird sound” with me that young, I probably wasn't paying attention to the radio much back then.
Magic Fly by Space for me (I think, it was some time ago ).
LOL! I would also add Rick Wakeman's work with Yes and his early solo albums.
Tangerine Dream - Das Mädchen auf der Treppe (White Eagle)
White Eagle - New arranged for the German TV-Episode TATORT - Das Mädchen auf der Treppe
