Something like this maybe
Exact what i'm thinking since a long time. The main reason they never do it is they want to sell different devices. But i have hope that when the market will change, apple change also their mind like with smaller iPads and bigger iPhones.....
An OSX/iOS hybrid between 15 and 17" with macbook pro specs would fit my needs today well. Just bigger is really not enough anymore to pay again.....
I really like the idea of the surface pro and others but maybe apple could fit that all better in the (near) future. I also have the feeling that in the future everything have to melt together instead of beeing developed with different OS and standards. At least it would be my logical thinking (and maybe of a few others).
Thanks - sold within about an hour of advertising!
Normally I would, but this particular indulgence required me to spend rainy, cold afternoons fixing rust patches and panels on a regular basis, so it had to go! She's been eyeing up Cornish holiday cottages all afternoon so this might make losing the van a bit less painful...
Not quite certain about the exchange rate on Cornish holiday cottages, but that sounds like at least one very shiny large device to me....
Yeah, and if they include the stylus thing I still might be able to use the 'I need it for work' angle
@Cinebient Apple has already filed patent for an iOS and OS X hybrid device. I guess you would need a detachable keyboard with touchpad. Maybe a stylus would work with OS X.
The reason I don't thing it's a good idea is because a big iPad is likely to be big.
Having been a professional photographer many decades ago in my twenties and thirties, and not a professional any more now, I (and most other photogs my age) see the value in capable sophisticated cameras that can essentially fit in a jacket pocket. Gone are the days when we'd willingly carry two pro sir bodies, three heavy lenses, two flashguns and a tripod, without even noticing the insane size and weight. We won't do it now, and if it's not a pro job were on, we simply leave the gear at home. It never gets taken out if it's too big and heavy,. Cameras don't work as well if you leave them at home. We always say to. Newbies that the best camera is the camera that you have with you.
Same with a big iPad. It'll stay at home most of the time. If it's only going to be used at home anyway, then it might as we'll be the MacBook that most of us already have. If you make music on the bus or tube, on your iPad, you probably won't take it out if it's too big, hence, you'll be more likely to leave it at home, and what use is it at home if you're not?
i think big is a good idea, I'm not unlike you though in that I prefer smaller devices to large ones but I'm thinking that money comes to apple in all shapes and sizes so I doubt that offering an larger iPad will stop them from trying to make money off of the people who prefer smaller devices as well.
For me, as well as the obvious joy at being to run my music apps at a decent speed and see them larger to help my old eyes, is the potential for using graphics apps. I currently use a Wacom tablet for digital art/graphic stuff, so if the rumoured pen support materialises apps such as Sketchbook Pro will really come into their own. I can't afford a Centiq so if the new iPad supports a stylus it should provide added functionality so I can justify the extra cost. If not, then I'll got for the best of whatever standard size iPad is current.
I think there's definitely a much smaller market for and limits to how big an iPad can get for the reasons mentioned by @u0421793 in terms or portability and the mechanics of using a large touch screen. The larger screen means you have to make larger movements with your arms and this can lead to strains with chronic usage. A stylus can extend the effective range of your touches and use one arm more often than needing both but only so much. As well as heavier, the larger the iPad the larger the space needed to operate it in and you start thinking about swivel stands and the like. With these extra mounting accessories you quickly lose the iPadness of the device and the justification for why it couldn't be a touch screen monitor rather than needing to be an all in one unit. It'll be interesting to see how large a workable screen for the masses will end up being.
Just because the iPad was spawned from the iPhone and mobility is a part of that equation/lineage doesn't preclude iOS and touch interfaces from leaving the mobile domain.
I like the mobile nature of it all but iOS apps on a big screen could be pretty nice. Single screen NLog? Yes please! Plus, 17" laptops are considered portable by many.
I wish they would include an iPhone 6 plus inside a Macbook as touch pad including iOS Of course it should be connected too with the OS X behind the scenes.
I suspect OS X will become more like iOS than the other way round. A future MacBook air might turn out to be our future big iPad.
All things considered , i'm happy with the size of my iPad, I think.
Rarely do I think, "if only I had more space on the screen" or, "this UI is too small to be usable" (I have long since deleted Thesys by the way)
I do, however, often think, "midi sync - aahhhh" or "why can't we just have one DAW that just works?" or "I need more storage" or "why is getting stuff between apps such a PITA?".
I personally think there are much higher priorities in iOS music than a bigger screen.
Not much on the OS X UI is in anyway is of use with touch, while IOS is good to go, so if touch does come to OS X, my bet would be via iOS embedded inside OS X, perhaps at first dual boot, then maybe a virtual environment where both OS's can interact, but on it's own touch OS X will have a tough learning curve similar to win8, something's will be really tricky with a big touch screen, accidental touching the screen with wrists, forearm etc. and all the problems @Paulinko, raises.
There's talk of a split screen feature with the new big pad boy. That would be useful for having a synth, and effect side by side for simultaneous tweakage
the latest rumor is that there is a new 12" retina macbook air coming out this year (maybe this month?). http://www.macrumors.com/2015/03/03/rumor-retina-macbook-air-march-9-event/ I'm just hoping that this and the "big iPad" are the same thing :-)
I could see Tim Cook finishing the macbook air announcement then saying "oh and it has one more new feature" as he lifts the screen away from the keyboard and it seamlessly swaps to iOS...
@Hmtx not certain about that scenario, but there is a rhythm to dropping surprise bombs and I do think Apple may be due...
Nice idea!
Please, oh please, don't let them release that this month. That would be financially devastating for me right now.
I'm hoping this 12" Retina MacBook Air everyone is talking about is actually a MacBook/iPad hybrid.
Too funny
I wonder if you can get Caustic running on the Nabi big pad 24?
You haven't yet learned to wait at least one Apple year before getting the latest device?
An Apple Year?
With the recent move of FL Studio over to Mac OS, you may also have noticed in the version 12 beta, they are integrating touch features, surprise, surprise! I wonder why?
I'm in the more iOS into OS X expectation camp. I believe that Steve Jobs goal was to obsolete the lap tops and desk tops with the iPad and its successors. Whether or not Tim Cook will have the balls to follow that path is TBD.
The iPad can do 95% of the things 90% of computer users need. I am comfortable doing everything but development on it. I see the iPad 12 inch as an assault on busines desk tops and lap tops, not mobile iPad users. I'll still be in the line to get one, bigger is better for old eyes. Will need visually equivalent pixel density to an Air 2 or I'll pass. I am an old fuddy-dudy so I'll always have a lap top, and I still try to develop for fun every now and then when I am feeling well.
I'll take another wild guess and say I also think that Apple bought Camel primarily for the talent and got them to work on a iPad version of Logic Pro. Maybe just wishful thinking on my part. Touch controls done right can be way more powerful for music creation IMHO than mouse/pad/trackball and keyboard, buts its a big change and takes a while to get used to.
Who knows, maybe we well find all this out this coming Monday, but most people are betting on it being the iWatch release and pricing announcement.
@moonstring, I'm up for the iPad Monstro!
iZilla so Samsung can do S8Mothra.
@BigDawgsByte, let the mighty behemoths due battle!
