Yep, got it working perfectly both ways in logic x
Hi I’m a midi Numbnuts, does anybody have a baby-steps walkthrough of getting the iPad Air (8.1.3) to send midi to Logic Pro X (Yosemite) with ‘Music IO’. I’ve tried and failed, then read the forum and failed again. Is it time for midimux or another attempt?
Hi @pangolin -- for sending MIDI into Logic, I use the IAC driver on the Mac. There are other ways to do it, but this is IMO the easiest and least hassle.
1) Open up the Mac app "Audio MIDI Setup" -- you can search for it, or find it in Applications/Utilities. From there, you might need to open the MIDI window. Double-click on IAC Driver, and make sure it's enabled. This is sort of a MIDI hub, and makes it easy to relay MIDI from one spot to another.
2) In the Mac Music IO, select the "send to" tab. This is where MIDI that comes in over USB will be relayed to. Toggle on IAC Driver.
3) In Logic -- make sure that you have a software instrument track selected. MIDI that comes in from through the IAC driver will land there. (There are ways to do much more complex routing, but I'm trying to keep this simple.)
On the iPad -- start up Music IO. You should see a green circle when it connects.
1) In whatever app you want to send MIDI with.... Find the MIDI configuration panel there, and toggle on Music IO. In Animoog, it's under setup. In Sound Prism, you hit the house-shaped icon, follow the pages through MIDI, and toggle on Music IO as a MIDI destination. All the apps have a different way of doing it; if you let me know what you're trying to connect, I'll check it out, and get you more details.
And if you still have trouble -- email [email protected] -- and we'll be able to take care of you. I'm sort of the resident Logic junkie, Dan is an Ableton man, and Nic is into weird ancient hardware. I've started poking around with Studio One, and know a little Reaper too. Between the three of us, we should be able to sort out whatever problems anyone might have. (And if I've missed someone here, or elsewhere -- please bounce us an email, and we'll do our best!)
My understanding is that GarageBand does not have built-in MIDI out, but you can hack a work-around. There was a plug-in called MidiO, which would do the trick -- it acts like an AU synth app, but actually sends MIDI out, rather than making sound. Unfortunately, it looks like the developer for this has disappeared (and I don't know that I'd trust the MidiO files I see floating on some of the archive sites).
I'll look around, and see what I can find. It is do-able, but Apple has not made it easy.
Thats really the best "iPad-Dock"-solution, I've ever found. I can keep the iPad charged while it is connected to my midi-keyboard and don't have to hassle with unfinished hardware that costs much more than it is worth. Really happy!
Ehm how can I toggle that on the Mac App. I do see the tab but i cant toggle anything, i just see the midi port lists but theres no UI element that leds me toggle that (Send to"

Thanks @SecretBaseDesign it's now sorted. Doh......It was the most basic of errors, not toggling on MusicIO in the MIDI configuration panel of the specific app on the iPad. I appreciate the walkthrough on behalf of the midi-challenged.
I have a 2013 iPad Retina and a 2014 MacBook Pro, both running latest OS. Got MIDI going from iPad to Ableton and Garageband, but not to Studio One. No luck going with MIDI from Mac to iPad.
Also, on the iPad, Fiddlewax Pro not working with it. SoundPrism Pro and ChordPolyPad both work to send MIDI to the Mac.

Can logic be set up for different channels per track?
Can't get SP electro to work with Musicio. Any suggestions?
Wont work. SP Electro sends out on the first 3 midi channels on its own ports. MusiciO expects to receive midi on its own port. SP Electro doesnt have a midi preference setting.

@BiancaNeve I was able to get SP Electro to play midi instruments in both GarageBand and Logic Pro using MusIc IO by using MidiBridge or Midiflow to connect to the SP Electro midi to the Music IO midi which then plays the midi into the OS X app. As you experienced, I wasn't able to do so with just Music IO and SP Electro.
I was able to play midi instruments in GarageBand and Logic Pro using only SP Electro and the Midimux app.
Using a Logic Pro midi track I was able to play back into SP Electro using either MusicIO or midimux. For playback and recording to or from a Logic Pro midi track you need to make sure the correct port and midi channels are specified in the midi track.

I was just using MusicIO with Abelton and Robotic Drums and the midi sync is flawless! It was awesome using a robotic Drums to trigger drums in Abelton and be able to record into clips with no problems whatsoever. I can't wait for Audio to be added.
It is all a matter of perspective, i think it is simpler to just activate the midi in the app you want to control not in the Sender and the Receiver app.
Midibridge will work and MusiciO will get an update with more routing options as i was told over twitter.

Yep. I mean if you're spending serious money on a set up then why would you not want to be able to play your desktop synths and DAWs with Thumbjam... or play and pull in Animoog or Samplr etc?

Got this to work with an iPad 3 and Garageband on the Mac. Since Garageband on the Mac doesn't do MIDI out I guess there's no clock sync? I tried using Xynthesizr on the iPad as a sequencer with a software instrument in Garageband on the Mac and it played the notes but there was no clock sync. Xynthesizr had clock sync selected for Midi in with Music IO's port.
Still pretty cool though!
Any news on when the audio piping side of this is going to be ready, as Audiomux is already out?
Is the companion app going to be on the Mac AppStore soon? I usually like to wait as AppStore versions of things are much easier to both update or remove if necessary.
MusicIO won't have a companion app, both MIDI and audio will be handled there. Audiomux and Midimux are both on the appstore now.
AQ808 was referring to the Mac side of things. At the moment, the companion app is only available on the devs' website.
The audio update should be submitted to Apple in the next day or two; just polishing up some UI things, and working on the documentation. After submitting to Apple, it's about a week to ten days for approval (but that's something totally out of our control).
We're keeping the app at the intro price until the update comes out, so if you have not pulled the trigger on Music IO yet, now would be a good time to do so.
v1.1 will have a single audio channel from iOS to OS X. The code is in place for multiple channels, and I have four channels running simultaneously in the development version. v1.2, which is on the schedule for mid/late April, will likely have four channels of audio from iOS to OS X, and a single channel from OS X to iOS (unless someone makes a really compelling argument for more channels). v1.2 will let you send audio from the Mac, process it on iOS, and then record back on the Mac. We're trying to target a balance of features that handle the things that most people need, while giving stable and reliable performance on the common hardware platforms. We're also trying to keep things stripped down, so people don't get overwhelmed by complexity.
We're supporting IAA directly. I love Audiobus, and the AB team is awesome, but it didn't seem like the right fit for what we're trying to do with Music IO. You'll be able to add and remove synth and effect apps directly from the Music IO interface on iOS, rather than having to switch back and forth between multiple apps. We're thinking about providing the ability to add and remove synth apps from the Mac side too -- I want it, but Dan and Nic think it'll make the UI complex and confusing -- and they're probably right. Audio is handled everywhere as 32-bit floating point, 44.1khz. On the iOS side, we'll need iOS 7 or 8 (IAA constraint). On the Mac side, it's OS X 10.7 to 10.10. Nic really wants to get support in for OS X 10.6, so we're working on that.
The Midimux/Audiomux pair are nice applications -- I don't see this as an "us vs. them" battle. They're doing good work, and seem like nice people; I look at it as an "all of us together are doing cool things." IMO, we have made some technical and marketing decisions differently, and depending on what you're doing, one app might be a better fit than another. If all you need is MIDI, then definitely look at MIDI LE -- it's free. All of the apps are reasonably priced, so I would recommend getting everything, and seeing what works best for you. I like how the Music IO team is positioned for the long term -- I think we've made the right choices, but we'll have to wait and see how things play out in the market. I can't say enough good things about my partners on this -- both Nic and Dan are serious talents, and it's been fantastic to bounce ideas off of them, and be in a team where any one of us can tackle any development task (and not only get it done, but get it done right).
We've got a few things up our sleeves for future releases, and I'm sure the other developer teams do too. This is a great time for iOS music making, and I'm thrilled (and still a bit stunned) that Apple is letting us use the USB connection. Over the past year or two, I was working on the Apollo apps that do audio over WiFi, and MIDI over Bluetooth; I had no idea that USB would become available. While I suspect that I won't be selling as many copies of the Apollo apps in the future, I'm glad I did the work: it let us move onto USB fairly quickly, and I already know all the places I can get burned.
