Thesys accepts MIDI CC and notes in to affect different sequence controls, and has an internal synth. As far as i know it needs to be running in its own sequence mode to output audio, and cannot pass thru midi notes to the internal synth. Its primary purpose is to generate midi patterns and output to an external synth...
I must confess that Thesys is one of my apps that ive got the least value out of so far. I bought it full price, opened it, had to squint a lot, only understood about half of it and then went back and used StepPolyArp and MidiPro when I needed to sequence something.
I can't really remember why I got it.
That's not to say it's not good. Just that I haven't got on with it so far.
Moi aussi, he says, somewhat sheepishly and in French on the basis that some folks will only half blame him for being dense....
I'm struggling with it a bit, to be honest. Putting notes in accurately is very hit and miss for me, and the gate etc. controls don't seem to improve things. For four quid I'll stick with it but my least favourite SB app so far.
My major criticism with Thesys is that it is very unstable. Just got a beautiful groove going, controlling Thumbjam and iFretless bass, into Crystalline, and as soon as I try and record it into Audioshare the sound dies, or it crashes. This app is capable of great things, but buggy as hell.
@monzo What kind of iPad do you have? What version of iOS?
Air 2, iOS 8.2. I've managed to record a simple setup into Auria (though another sound played along with the sequence when I recorded it), but it won't play in an AB chain. Could be Audiobus though as it seems to be causing problems with everything on this pad.
I tried to emulate your setup with what I own. I have an Air 2 but I decided to use my 2013 iPad mini Retina (A7, 1 GB of RAM) running iOS 8.1.
Using Audiobus I loaded up Thesys, Thumbjam, and because I don't own iFretless Bass I used iSem as my third input in Audiobus. I put Crystaline for the effect and Cubasis for the output. I was able to record the audio on the first try.
After experimenting for 15 min Thesys and Thumbjam came up as errors in Audiobus. Maybe Thesys and Thumbjam don't work play well with each other?
Thanks for checking. Yeah, just seems everything is so unpredictable with the iOS8 + Audiobus combo. I've tried running Thesys with the effects via IAA and directly into Auria but also getting errors. I'm starting to wonder what I can actually use Thesys for, if I'm not able to record with the thing.
I am able to record Thesys internal synth in in Cubasis through IAA but there is an echo. I checked and I didn't have any effects loaded.
Has anyone had any luck with Thesys? What was your setup?
Thesys works great here, within or without Audiobus, Audio thru Effektrix, Midi into different Apps, all recorded in Garageband and Auria, all good, on ios 7 (iPadAir1) and ios 8 (iPadAir2). Maybe I'm lucky?
@animal That's cool you got it to work. When running more that one instrument, what apps work with it?
