The BeatWave UI is unexpectedly Good

this is the first app that is not a sampler or drum synth, and has no slicing or sample import that I actually would even consider liking, I'm messing around with the free version and find this app really well thought out. I will request sample import from the dev. Anybody else using this?

  • @kobamoto Funny. I just got off the couch (to the gym!) after spending an hour playing with Beatwave. Haven't touched it in six months but see they've changed a few things around. It is pretty good. Esp. put through FLUX into AS.

A couple of simple things I can't figure out that have been changed (how DO YOU change the number of repeated bars when on loop?), but it's a neat little piece and probably good for laying out templates...had enough fun that when I return, somewhat slaughtered, I will give it another go.

Can't believe that guy back then spent the money on all the packs/instruments, but I'm kind of pleased he did now...

  • Bought it years ago and now re-installing.

This app is interesting in that it is the subject of the only negative review (afaik) from that near-mythical iTunes legend, Trassman.

    Whatever happened to Trassman?

  • Excellent find, thanks @kobamoto!

  • Beatwave!! Without H thx
    @kobamoto

  • I'm just learning the app JG, that might make you laugh as it seems like an app that you'd learn in 5 minutes but the UI is so convenient that it makes me feel like I'm missing something all of the time... I haven't sprung for any of the iap yet, just been using it as an experimental beatmachine turning the tempo down extremely low and having at it but its fun. I might just buy the iaps for this thing but I'll never tell anyone.

  • you guys with sample packs is the game sound library better than the demo, cause i thought the game sounds they allowed you to hear were not very good?

wow I remember that guy, even before i had an iPad saw his name wonder what happen, or did he change it to true yorky ?

  • @kobamoto Heard and understood Captain K. If I can just about struggle back to the couch I'm going to give the thing another whirl myself. Have to say that being able to run other synths through Auxy these days has kind of filled up my 'simple but still good' piano roll slot, but more is always welcome. Might try that slow tempo notion myself...

  • @kobamoto

The sample packs are good, all in this app is good, you can do cool things in this app.
Without tweaking a lot, just sit down and write. Is really worth it and you support this kind of unique apps.

  • I think a lot of Devs should take a good long look at Beatwave's UI. May not have all that much under the hood, but it's so easy to jump in and start composing. Good UX is about removing obstacles and Beatwave does this very well :)

  • @JG when you run these synths with auxy how are you turning it all into audio, are you muting tracks and recording one by one into audioshare, or ... ?

ok Aphex this $10 bucks I'm about to spend is on you : )

@Eustressor , i agree. I wish the dev was more responsive though, their Facebook page is quiet as a mouse, especially when I'm about to spend a tenner on them.

  • @JH And how many can you run at a time?

  • Great to hear you guys are enjoying the update !

@JohnnyGoodyear the inability to change repeated bars issue was an unfortunate bug that snuck through on the iPad side. On the iPhone it's working and you can just tap the '1x' . Will be getting a fix out there ASAP.

  • @djfumberger No worries. Sometimes we prefer to hear of a bug than having our own innate stupidity confirmed (again :)...look forward to the fix.

What APP is it most like or a replacement for?

If, say, I run Thor and Sunrizer out on two different Auxy tracks then connect Thor and Sunrizer through AB to Auria and then run Auxy it records both tracks at the same time separately....

Beatwave: I don't believe so. Would like to be proved wrong...

  • Has anyone used Xenon Groove?

  • @JohnnyGoodyear: I figured as much. I neither have Auria or an iPad fit enough to run it, I'm like the ghost of old Monzo now that the new Monzo's got a flying carpet :)

I'd like to know this as well

I'd have to agree with Auxy, but both offer enough difference to occupy their own space. Do you need both? Do you need either? Inevitably: Yes and no. For me, yes and yes.

  • With Audiomux especially, Beatwave is excellent. This thing is one MIDI sync/start/stop feature away from being one of my top generators.

  • How are you using it empolo?

I just come up with a good rhythm and sample into Ableton and/or Maschine for further chopping. Nice so far - MIDI clock and transport controls will provide even better control. That's really all I need from this app now.

Flying off into the sunset with Gadget at the moment! I've even installed iMPC Pro to see if I can squeeze some usage out of that one :)

@monzo don't tell @kobamoto but late at night and when the house is quiet, dark, I sometimes open iMPC and admire things about it. Occasionally I even let it out to run around a little, but soon enough it gets put firmly back in the box. Until the next time.

I noticed it still insists on playing when I click record in Auria, as it did in GarageBand even if I just want to record some pad action. I'm not going to complain though, I'm going to explore it's POSITIVE features and enjoy. And then I'll delete it again.
