I think i don't go for the Kontakt 5 this year but instead i bought another instrument for the player after i saw the videos
My Mrs. is going to kill me but it was (another) expensive must buy! Can't wait to play it via ThumbJam. Whatever, if it gives me what i think it's worth the money. I mean...can you pay for emotions?! Some people spend thousands, even when they are not rich, for one moment of a few seconds. Crazy?..... or they just live
At least one of the good thing in the desktop world is that you can sell your stuff one day you get rid of it.
I totally agree with spending a lot of money sometimes on thoughtful things. Like you said you gotta just live. If you don't mind me asking I'm curious what instrument you got instead of Kontakt 5.
Maschine.... meh, until give it's development more focus.
This here. I was searching a long time for a really great playable virtual cello and i wish it was cheaper of course but i think this is the best playable instrument in this league. There are amazing things possible with some apps i own and Sample Tank 3 i have etc. but this is in another league. I will see in a few days if it was the right choice since i bought the boxed version. I prefer it always over downloads! I started to play it now in my mind via 2 ThumbJam midi outs. One for the keyswitches and one for the playable scale..... I even forgot a lot of my current troubles since i want to play with it. So it was still worth the price for me
I mean for me this is really a bunch of money but f..... it. Each day could be the last
It's recorded with and without vibrato (no synthetic vibrato here). I always use my b2 reverb on such things. And yes, if you hear the samples raw you know if it's sounds good. Of course it's not possible to hear a sample without any reverb
From the description you have access to the "dry" sample. However, from all libraries i saw and heard of these seems to be the most flexible and realistic in term of expression you can add. At least nothing on iOS could top this. I don't know about the really expensive libraries out there but i heard nothing better yet. Well, i will know next week i hope.
@Cinebent Sweet! You've got a lot of control. I never used anything that complex that focused on one instrument.
You mentioned SampleTank 3. How does that compare to the Kontakt instruments? Do you have more options to modify the sound?
Sample Tank 3 has a ton of samples (after install about 33GB). It also has some nice articulations especially in the violin and guitar section but it's all to static and synthetic for me. I wanted at least such an instrument where i can build a track around. And since i love a cello this was a must for me
In Sample Tank 3 i have a synth/sample engine which can stretch phrases, vocals or single shot notes over the whole note range without that horror and chipmunk effect. And i have a ton of FX included. It works not always good but it's usable.
But must wait 2 weeks..... need fresh money !
I just use the Kontakt 5 player so i can't compare it to this. I think it's far more advanced from the description (but not sure if the full Kontakt have a time-stretch-algorithm). If i had to choose i would go for Kontakt now because i saw that you get so much (also free) stuff for it. Mostly you need the full version for the freebies. I might take this too. I mean for 124,50€ i must buy it
Edit: I mean i could die for such an instrument on an iPad. Kontakt for Auria Pro.... oh that would be open such a huge world.
@Cinebent Thanks. NI is giving half off for a Komplete upgrade right now and my ancient copy from 10 years ago qualifies. That's when Apple was still using Power PC CPUs!
@mkell424, If I were you I'd take up that upgrade offer, Komplete and Ultimate, excellent, just got a Mikro and crossgrade, overspent but well worth it for what you get, only problem with it is where to begin, guess I'll be like a kid in a candy store!
I agree! I'm getting Komplete 10 for $99. I can't believe how much was added in 10 years! I'm looking forward to trying out PolyPlex, Rounds and Kontour. Also the Session Horns & Strings look to be high quality.
I'm glad they still have AbSynth and of course Kontakt after what Cinebent said. Also Kontakt supports SoundFonts which is great because I've bought some from Digital Sound Factory. Like you said, a kid in a candy store. :-)
I love candy. I just came out of the fitness center and first i need a ton of candy to fill up again
Then i need to make some music..... the world can be great
@mkell424: For 99$ it would be criminal to not upgrade
I must say that once you bought some stuff or third party libraries NI offers really the best bang for buck (only sonosaurus can top that:) I really like other samplers more but Kontakt has such a huge fellowship....
@Cinebient Yeah I'd be nuts not to take advantage of the half price offer. But now I'm considering the Ultimate crossgrade for $359. It would cost $700 normally, and once I had it I could keep upgrading it to new Ultimate editions for a nominal price.
If you don't mind taking a look at the Ultimate. I know you said you have the free version but you have experience with Kontakt instruments. There's a ton of them with the Ultimate edition. Each one retails separately for $99 - $149. Also is there a big difference in sound quality compared to iOS instruments like iSymphonic, Korg Module, etc?
http://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/bundles/komplete-10-ultimate/included-products/
Komplete Ultimate (especially for a reduced price) is maybe the biggest bang for buck in the whole music buisness. I could imagine buy it myself if they offer it 50% off before Komplete 11 Ultimate comes. Of course you must ask yourself if you will use most of the stuff. I mean 440GB is a hell of samples and instruments. But alone the instruments i would like would cost me more if i had to buy them one after one. I bought some of them while each instrument was 50% off last year. F.e. things like Kinetic Metal or Damage (don't own it yet) are unique and great (for my needs). Also most of the libraries (and some synths and/or drum machines) are far more advanced than everything on iOS in terms of round robin, velocity layerd and in general higher quality with different microphone settings etc. IOS lacks really good solo instruments with a lot of control. Of course you can make really a lot with iOS apps but i want to go further this road. Should i spend another 100€+ for iOS apps or buy something expensive but can be sure that i will have usage for years and support...i answered myself
Of course it's also easy to get lost in this big world and your desktop or notebook also should be not the oldest thing. But you are right, once you on ultimate i think they will offer great new things for a good price in the future.
I finally decided to make a small music production studio instead of just creating things while half-sleeping on the sofa
S
Then there are so much good (and not so good) third party things for Kontakt out there. And some (like stuff from embertone f.e.) comewith an OSC iPad control app. I decided to combine all this worlds and go a step (or two) further since iOS limits me personally. When apple finally makes an iPad pro i will buy the entree model as controller for sure
Sorry long post.... i def. recommend to check all the demos and look at all the manual pdf you can download to see what each instrument can do and if you really want/need it. Damn, i can't wait for my boxed Emotional Cello..... hurry up best service!
I would love to see something like Reaktor Session with all the ensembles as IAPs - lots of freebies and bundles- so the ensemble builders could have a new ios market-
So would I, but as the wicked witch said to the iPad 'I'm melting'
Let's just hope apple never buy NI.... then most of the music world is doomed
I think that could be an iPad pro exclusive thing then. I don't think that Reaktor or Kontakt would work on an current iPad. Too small, still to limited. IOS is another thing. I just still hope for that touch OS X one day so that i can use all my desktop tools with touch in a far far future
But then i think that a lot things just would not work good on a touch screen and sometimes it's better to have a large monitor with keyboard, mouse/trackpad and a additional touch device for editing/control. After searching for THAT one device i know that this will NEVER exist..... at least in the next 10-20 years not. An Apple watch with the CPU and RAM to power everything i could imagine.... nice!
reaktor worked just fine ten years ago on my 500mhz 500MB RAM Athlon PC- my iPad Air blows that out of the water- most of the PC softsynths are at least 5 years old -and ran fine on old PCs - the iPad easily roasts any PC I ever owned- I don't understand why anyone thinks the iPad can't handle them-
I don't think that the latest ensembles run on it but i was talking mainly over size of the screen and in general the iOS limits. It would end in another player maybe. But you're right it would work better than a Kontakt which would even more difficult. My iPad Air is still an ilemon
Sorry long post....
No thank you! The long post was awesome.
I really appreciate you taking the time to look things over and give your opinion. I think I'm pull together some cash and spend the $350 on Ultimate.
Waldorf is releasing its' 2001 Attack drum machine on iOS. As far as NI in addition to Reaktor I'd like to have AbSynth and Massive on the iPad. They are both at least 10 years old.
Never used massive or absynth. Absynth looks interesting. I wonder when this synths get an update. He he, but i think synth wise i have still too much things. Now i started to collecting sample libraries
You will get lost forever
I would need first another extern SSD for the 440GB content. Not much space left
Rounds!
I still lost with all of my iOS purchases.
I would have waited but 50% is too good of a deal to pass off.
I'm in the same boat as you with the need for an external drive. That was one my questions I asked in a email I sent to NI. If everything has to be installed on primary drive then unfortunately the deal is off.
I've haven't tried it but the audio demo on the NI was very cool. It comes with both versions of Komplete.
External drive installation possible.
http://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/how-do-i-install-my-native-instruments-komplete-content-to-an-external-drive/
Another thing i don't like about the macstore.... as i know you can't put these apps on external drives. I have just 250GB intern space in my macbook... full.... a few days ago i bought a samsung SSD with 250GB. I put the Sample Tank 3 samples on it and a few other things. Works really great, fast and the thing weights 30g. SSD are still not cheap but no way i will ever use a sluggy 5000rpm drive (even 7200rpm are to slow). My next Macbook (if there will be one) will have for sure the biggest internal drive which is possible. These small SSD are really fast and great. Wouldn't it be cool if we could put them also on an iPad to store samples etc. I have nothing to do in the afternoom so i will look the "awesome" , "unbelievable", "great" Tim Cook show. Hope there is something interesting today
Tomorrow comes my Cello
@Cinnebent Have you considered upgrading your internal drive? I did it with my 2009 MacBook. OWC sells kits that have the screwdrivers and an external drive enclosure so you can still use your old hard drive. They also have posted videos online that guide you through the process. It's very easy to do.

Not possible with my MacBook pro retina. Another way apple bothers us. Each new device has less options to build it up or change things. Also there is no more audio line in for the headphone jack.
