Everything i've said above could be done with either Bilbao or Abu... I mainly used Abu because it was one file import rather than 3 separate ones. But it makes no odds.

Thanks Matt, you really inspire me to knuckle down with Gadget - I'm on holiday for a few days now so it'll give me the chance to have a good go with it. I've got Abu, might get Bilbao too - Gadget seems to be one of the most stable apps I have now so it's worth investing in all it can offer.

Yep, that's good for Bilbao (5 secs x 16 samples).

In Abu I find you run out of sample length (10 secs in total for all your 16 notes) if you notes have longish tails...

And then augmenting it even more with virtual midi controllers!

The reason I sequence 16 short 8th notes across 2 bars is that, if it's done right, the slice points get lined-up automatically. I also like having more, rather than fewer notes (or chords) in Abu, so that my user presets are more useful for future use.

  • @monzo - I wouldn't get too distracted by Bilbao for now unless you really want to use a lots of samples.

I'd just try and bend the f**k out of the main Gadget app / really master it... I've found this great fun. The handling of automation is superb...

Do some crazy stuff like making a bass line or a lead with the Tokyo drum synth (4 instances of it!) - mangle a Marseille instrument through some crazy filters (e.g. the GrainShift), make a percussion patch out of Chiang Mai, then mid percussion loop wack up the release and pull down the pitch - with loads of reverb and/or delay.

It will all still probably sound really good - because Gadget has a knack of making even the nutty stuff sound great.

You can get lost for hours making crazy stuff in a few of the synths like Chiang Mai (probably my favourite). And you can just hit record and record all the midi at any point. Then delete, tweak or keep.

I'd like to get a few samples from apps such as Different Drummer and SeekBeats in there, but I definitely need to get more into the automation side of things - I haven't scratched the surface of what it can do yet.

Definitely Bank Holiday Gadget time this weekend :)

  • @monzo Be interested to know what you make of it come Tuesday. Especially your feelings as regards Abu/Bilbao....I have both but end up using the latter mostly (and endlessly bemoaning the sample length limitation, but there you go..)

I'll probably start off all excited and brimming with ideas, and then spend all my time trying to fathom out why this or that isn't working, and then come on here and moan about it. As usual.

Probably not though - I haven't had any issues with Gadget since 8.3, so as long as I don't go near Auria or Different Drummer then I'll be fine.

I'm still trying to settle into the new iPad - the old one was like a lovely old comfortable chair but this is still a bit cold, steel, framework bus shelter seating arrangement - the new ones with spikes for tramps and pissed hippies. I need to find some nice cushions, and maybe a little table for my pot of tea. Maybe making samples from the unruly apps, and then forcing their complaining frequencies into Gadget, then recording everything into lovely GarageBand before exporting the stems into Auria/Hitler for editing and lols will be the cosy fireside dream home I'm after. Maybe not, but one must try.

  • @monzo ... Build your track in Gadget. You won't regret it. Don't record it out into anything. That's my advice anyway.

Seak beats makes beautiful short sample sounds. It's amazing. Throwing those into Abu or Bilbao is, IMO, a very GOOD THING.

Different drummer? That's probably a whole weekend in itself isn't it? What would be cool one day is to get different drummer driving Gadget via midi (although it would be restricted to 1 instrument) . Then recording the notes in Gadget as midi. But I was too scared by DD when I bought it. And haven't touched it since.

  • I've done that on a few occasions Matt. I got to remember to disable the Gadget track loop and set the loop length to what I want, but once that's done, it's quite fun.

For some reason I haven't been able to produce much with Gadget. I have even forced myself to sit down and use nothing but, and I get a couple ideas going and then I'm back Beatmaker 2 or even iMaschine. I don't know why, I have even had better luck with ikaosillator. I have Abu Dabi, and I keep thinking that will help, but it is still just sitting there. Full disclosure, I have an iPad 3.

Maybe I need Bilbao to get a track going with the way my brain works.
