A Reliable Step Sequncer Like Gadget or Auxy (Not Pro MIDI)

Hi. I'm using Auxy to drive the bs-16i. I love Auxy because there's no latency, great interface, and it doesn't crash on me. Unfortunately there's only 4 tracks.

I tried Pro MIDI with different apps on several occasions and had bad luck. Is there a matrix step sequencer that's rock solid as far as latency and crashing, and that is easy to use? I have Cubasis but I'm not a fan of the piano roll. Thanks!

  • One possibility is to edit in Pro MIDI, 1 channel at a time, and then import the midi into Cubasis.

  • Have a look at Koushion: https://itunes.apple.com/app/koushion-midi-step-sequencer/id424454249?mt=8#&uo=8&at=10lPzZ

    Genome is another popular alternative.

As for me, I'm patiently waiting for modstep :)

Thanks neinneinnein for the suggestion. When trying to write music It's hard for me to dump a track and then edit the others. I guess what I'd like to do is hear all 8 channels of the bs-16i playing at once through MIDI and have the ability to edit them at the same time (like on a desktop).

As far as Matrix sequencing Gadget does this best but it is a closed system. I'm hoping that a I'll have better luck with a single multitambrial instrument like the bs16i than trying to sync up various apps.

  • Cubasis? MultiTrackStudio? Beatmaker 2?

  • You might get on with Genome. Or BM2.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not a big fan of BeatMaker 2's UI but some of the others look interesting.

*MultiTrackStudio looks pretty good. It even has a soundfont player and a sampler. The manual is sparse and I can't find many screenshots. How many different SoundFonts can you play at the same time? Is it easy to use? Is it worth $30?

*Genome looks great but a little confusing. Is it easy to use?

*Koushion is the cheapest. How does it rate against the others?

    What do you recommend? Thanks!

I saw an article for that. Looks cool. When is that rumored to come out? Also there's Auria Pro. Maybe I should wait?

I was trying this some time ago with the Brainwave Sequencer app (at that time there where no good sequencers around, I never got the concept behind Genome Sequencer, did not try the recent update) and trying to find a multitimbral instrument, tried Bs16, FL Studio and Music Studio, but gave up doing this on Ipad.

I love MTS. Some users consider it the best iOS DAW. And if you're into soundfonts, it becomes really an all-in-one musical solution. It can open some huge soundfonts that crash BS-16i, is rock solid, and if you ever come across some issue or bug, its developer Giel Bremmers is extremely responsive in the MTS forum or by email.

The standard MTS purchase includes up to 16 midi and/or audio tracks, and each track can have its own soundfont. The $20 Pro IAP extends this to 32 tracks, plus other good stuff. For me they were worth it.

If you search the MultitrackStudio user forum, you'll find some tutorial videos kindly made by users. They might help decide if it's for you.

  • I've so far not found a single sequencer on the iPad that fully 'ticks' with me, Gadget comes close but still lacks some editing features. Yamaha's Music Mobile Sequencer is pretty neat and has loads of features and quite ok editing.

What I'd love to see in Gadget is a 'pattern based' approach (ie. make a pattern with an instrument and chain the patterns into a song, not the 'scene' approach with multiple copies of patterns). The Yamaha sequencer has a 'pattern/scene mode' and a 'linear mode' into which you can also drag the patterns. And well, I'd love to see more than one bar at the time in Gadget too(Zoom-Out?). And well, editing velocities in Gadget is a hit'n'miss' (why on earth can't we just make a selection and affect only that selection when editing velocities by drawing?).

I get frustrated with Cubasis every time i try to edit with the piano-roll, the zooming is meh (as pointed out by many others in various threads here).

I had high hopes for Pro Midi but it's as it is now too fiddly, I'd love to see an option to 'lock' the grid and pattern size to avoid accidental scrolling/zooming. (same goes for most touch-based sequencers, hello, Cubasis, Beatmaker 2 etc...).

There is hope though as the developer of MidiSequencer is working on (as far as i know) a pattern based midi-sequencer with linear mode too. (In song-mode patterns have playback-options like transpose, velocity scale etc.).

All it takes is patience and polite constructive feedback to the developers and keeping hope alive :D

It was supposed to come out this month(May) but it didn't happen. Hope we will see it released in June. I even filled in a form on their site to become a beta tester but never heard back. Probably, the developers are very busy working on the release version

As for Genome and Koushion, I'm afraid I can't give you any recommendations because I don't own any of these apps. Only watched some videos on Youtube and liked what I saw, but you never know until you try it by yourself.

I'm gonna wait for modstep and see if it delivers on all promises and expectations

  • @Samu you can see up to 8 bars of gadget on its piano roll if you pinch to zoom at the top of the screen (or in the middle of the screen I think).

    AFAIK, Cubasis has this option

You can zoom out to see up to 12 bars in Gadget if you pinch-in on the top dark blue bar. It's fiddly and annoying as sometimes you can add notes by mistake and with the fact there is still no undo.....

I really like Genome and MTS too but there seems to be no perfect app for complete sequencing. I've been beta testing modstep ..it's great, still no song mode as yet though but the pattern sequencing modes it has for each track is really good. It's great for a performance based session.

Auria pro will be worth waiting for. For me, I think sketching a pattern up in either Gadget or Genome and then when I have the structure taking it into Auria pro for finishing might work.

Gadget still needs a lot of functions. Midi import where art thou....?

edit: just saw Matt's post :)

  • I'm doing beta on Modstep. So far it has a lot of potential. Genome seems recommended by many and I've herd some like the Yamaha one. I wonder what is taking Auria Pro's update so long. At any rate...Speaking of Genome...Here's a video I found with Genome and a Moog Minotaur + Moog analog delay. I put a Minotaur on order after I saw/herd this vid:

to Gadget zoom out - not a huge differece from pinching but you can also just hold a bar with one finger and tap on the other bar to zoom out so you can see from the bar you were holding to the bar you tapped.

  • I am worried about Auria Pro. The weight of expectations seem (literally) unbearable. For all of that there is a spot at the table for the killer app in this area. Still not there yet. Which I suspect is why Gadget is taking up more of our combined time. It does a lot of the job well and has other attendant pluses.

In addition, you can also tap two bars simultaneously on the light blue strip on top, those two tapped and all in between will become your new grid view. often faster and more precise than pinching. (for me anyways)

Thanks everyone for the advice. For DAWs currently on the market It looks like MTS is a favorite followed by Genome.

Does MTS. ever go on sale? $30 is a lot for the basic version.

I think the limit is really the size of your soundfonts that need to be kept open in memory at the same time, versus whatever RAM your iPad model has. In theory, you could have a different soundfont for each of the 16 tracks playing at the same time - 16 different soundfonts playing 16 different instruments. Each of the 16 tracks could be following its own sequencing, or set to the same midi channel and playing all at the same time for some extreme multitimbral madness....

  • Please can we stop talking fondly of MTS. It's about the only music app I don't own and i'd like to keep it that way :).

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 I have the pro version, but I don't use it because I don't wany my life changed for the better etc.

Yeah a while ago I decided to simplify my life, and stop going after all those wonderful iOS synths and music apps, and focus on MTS and soundfonts.

Of course, since we seem to be wired for a never-ending search for the Holy Grail, now I can't seem to stop collecting soundfonts... And some of them are really expensive!

OK, but how's the workflow now? What's better? What do you feel MTS might be missing? I keep promising to buckle down (but then you know how that can go....)

Johnny, I'm really a beginner in music, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. For me it is really working well. Like many of us, I was really frustrated with the hit and miss of the inter-app stuff, and tried to focus on a self-contained solution. Initially I though it would be Gadget, but I was always running into some limitation that frustrated me.

I then tried MTS and liked the interface and concept. For me, MTS's main limitation was the relative lack of variety and quality in the built-in sounds. Now I have about 6 gigabytes of soundfonts in my MTS install, and use MTS for nearly everything.

And sometimes when I run into problems (either user- or app-created), Mr Bremmers is just a quick email away.

I'm happy using mostly ready-made sounds, and sometimes applying some effects on top. This setup works very well for that. So I guess I'm quite happy with my setup on the iPad!

  • @AndyX You seem and sound like a remarkably sane and sensible man. Lucky fellow :) And if it's working for you, keep at it. Encourages me to take a proper look at MTS. One of these days you should add a piece to SOTMC, I'd love to hear it....

The nice thing about MTS is it sounds like now and again you can choose to break your "rule" and midi out / audio in a completely external synth if you want (unlike Gadget, irritatingly) Just for special occasions, like...

Sounds really good... although for me I think it would get too limited by the lack of sound design and automation possibilities using soundfonts.

  • I really like MTS but I've had a few hiccups with it using IAA instruments some which are buggy to stop a full blown love-in with it.

But then that's more IAA and IOS at fault. It feels very robust when you don't use IAA.

One thing I want to email the developer about is that it doesn't slave sync to anything which I hope he can implement soon. I tend to use that feature a lot.

It's really streamlined though and the Midi/audio editing is really efficient.
