You can still find the smart media cards on amazon and ebay. They’re not too expensive if you dont go for the full 64mb ones.

The device (ES-1 MK1) doesn't support larger cards than 4MB and they have to be of the 5V variety (3.3V cards do NOT work). Most card readers today only support the 3.3V cards. I'm still amazed that the built-in battery has retained my samples all these years though...

I believe that is incorrect. I have the ES-1 MK1 and am using it with a 16mb (3.3V) card, which I easily found on Amazon.com for $12.99. I was also able to find a reader (after much digging) from China for under $9.99 new on EBay. The manual states that it can use smart media of 4 - 64mb (3.3V).

    Thanks!

Good for you! It could also be that the card-reader on the device has broken down...
...used to swap cards in it like crazy so it might need some repair but it's no bigger loss to be honest.

I bought it when it was brand new back in the days.
It was my first hardware sampler if I don't count the Amiga with GSS-8 :)

I do have a card-reader for SmartMedia cards and a bunch of cards too and all the samples I made are safely archived as *.wav files on my NAS. The cards work in the reader but the ES-1 refuses to read them...

Thanks for digging out all the info, appreciated!

  • I originally did it under the assumption that I would be importing samples that way. But by the time you go through the trouble of converting them to the right format, loading them onto the card, loading them into the ES-1 ... it’s a helluva lot easier just to sample directly into the thing. :D

So, right now I mostly just have the card sitting in there to back up banks before I do a bunch of messing about. I have a completely empty bank as a fresh starting point as well. So sometimes I’ll dump the current bank to the card, load up the empty one, and start from scratch. Once in awhile I’ll move those banks off to external storage, but I try to keep the in-and-out to a minimum. Those old smartmedia readers (and cards) do tend to break down.

Yeah and editing becomes 'muscle memory' :)
When it's time to trim the 'end' of the sample just put the playback in reverse mode.

What the iElectribe misses from the Electribe series is the per step automation editing.
iElectribe can only record the automation but editing per step is unfortunately missing.
(Gadget could also use some 'inspiration' from the Electribe with the stepped/smooth automation).

Over all it's a fun box and looking at Jakob HaQ's video playing with the ES-1 always brings a smile to my face :D

So far I’ve used iELECTRIBE to stave off the urge to get an ER-1

Resistance is futile. I had to hunt for months to find one in a decent state (they’re almost as rare as the black EM-1 these days, which incidentally is equally brilliant) but it’s great fun! Worth owning.

so I usually just bounce & export the wav audio recordings directly to BM3. Super handy since the wavs have the BPM in their name.

That's the way I've always used it. Super handy with the 'Open In...' for export :)
First 'Bounce' and then go to 'Share', select the file and tap the 'Export To...'
Just select 'Save to Files' and pick a folder inside BM3...
(Wish it was the same for all Korg apps).

in my faint memory the black one had an extremely cool sound B)

  • Nanokontrol 2 has a great native mode for this one, you can access almost every parameter quickly and easily. Nanopad 2 also has a one that works with the sequencer, haven't tried that. You can find these controllers used for very little money

They’re not too hard to find on eBay here in the US. You’re right, though, I’m gonna cave sooner or later. I spent the whole afternoon today with my ES-1. It’s loads of fun, but just not the same.

(BTW, if anyone reading this has an ES-1 and Midi Designer Pro 2, I built a control surface for it. Not to control the ES-1, which would be lame, but to help keep better track of what’s going on with the parameters. You can see all parts at once. It was more of a science experiment than anything else, really.)

Have you found a way to export stems from Gadget directly into BM3? Thanks.

Not directly but via Audioshare or Dropbox...
ITunes export has more ’options’(sample-rate and bit-depth) that’s why i promote Files.app support like a crazy person as that would grant us access to those files...(in practice if it was available, in BM3 tap ’Files’ browse to Gadget and pick what to import).

Ah okay, thanks @Samu . It’s not too much of a hassle as it is now.

We cannot even create new folders in ‘On My iPad’! Kinda reminds me of ‘Libraries’ in Windows 7.

That's because the 'On My iPad' only shows the 'Documents'(iTunes Folder) from those apps that have it enabled in their info.plist file. Meaning if 'Gadget' would get Files.app support it would just pop up there and once you're inside an apps 'folder' you can create additional folders if needed.
