Audio Unit extension in IOS:) what?

  • The quote I gave above either implies Logic is coming for iPad or this was a typo in the iOS 9 documentation. Why else would they mention Logic in the iOS 9 document in a paragraph discussing Audio Units for iOS ?

  • There are two sentences in that quote, and they are not about the same thing. I think you are misinterpreting it.

I took it to mean that with AU(e) plugins bought on ipad would properly act like virtual instruments and effects if remotely used in Logic etc on a Mac.

This is exactly what I thought

maybe logic is just their example of how to talk to a host?

however, good bye midiclockproblems, and good bye all the strange audio bugs !!! beeeeep - Radar 18793520 ^^
ableton live would be nice on iOS, hallo Berlin, macht mal hinne ^^

I wonder if Apple will sandbox the Mac AudioUnits plugin such that we'll get to the place where it will be almost as hard to pirate Mac AUs as it is to pirate iOS Apps.

I hate pirating. Let the free market flow!

I wonder what that search api is about?

find all your audio (inside apps) via the search ??? :)

hey siri, show me recordings i did last week ...

  • What we can be sure so far is that we don't know enough yet. :-)

  • I must be misinterpreting the description. Definitely no Logic in the iOS app store yet. I just checked.

  • Curious to see how this nets out. Pretty much sounds like IAA to me—I hope I'm just missing something. You can already sell effects plugins on the App Store that interact with DAWs. We've just never called them plugins before.

You're not wrong yet. Apple's wording is tricky here and you may be right. Logic could show up when iOS 9 does.

  • I would be very happy if my next iOS device was 12 inches and had Logic on it. we can dream

    ;-)

  • As much as i would love it.... no way they give us Logic Mobile when Garage Band for iOS is even so far limited against the free OS X version. First they would update this maybe. And if they really give us Audio Unit with split-screen..... prepare for some new bugs :)

if garageband on iOS would be like garageband on OS X that would be a large step up
its logic without midiout and without the busses ...

  • GarageBand 3.0 or Logic Express with AU extensions, AB and IAA. Apple can do it and make me very very happy:)

  • I'm hoping for logic pro on iOS and think the AUs and Alchemy purchase point in that direction, I just don't don't see it this year, maybe just an improved GarageBand with iOS 9. Still will upgrade to Auria pro the second its available.

The big win as I see it is for AU developers. It should (need to see the API first to know) be easier to maintain a single code base for your AU that you can build either for OS X or for iOS if the new iOS API is the same or a significant subset of the OS X API. I would expect that in the long run it will be cheaper, in terms of coding, testing, etc. cost overhead, for companies like Auria and the companies that provide the proprietary plugins to Auria to switch to the standard AU format. However, there is a marketing decision that will need to be made as the change would take away one of Auria's big advantages, i.e. proprietary top shelf plugins.

Looking forward to watching the WWDC core audio talk tomorrow.
