A quick Google got me this:

"The Audio Unit extension point allows your app to provide musical instruments, audio effects, sound generators, and more for use within apps like GarageBand, Logic, and other Audio Unit host apps. The extension point also brings a full audio plug-in model to iOS and lets you sell Audio Units on the App Store.
To learn more about creating app extensions in general, see App Extension Programming Guide."

    Curious

  • Hope they not talking about inter app audio.

  • The third thread about it ;) Maybe someone will twitter tomorrow after the session about it.... i really want to know too what "full audio plug-in model" means here exactly!

  • Lol...my bad. Didn't see the other threads.

  • I would be fine if they fix IAA,no matter how they call it:full total recall, more than one instance per session and rock solid midi sync. Thanks :)

ah yeah and iOS should quit/close the damn IAAs/plugins alone after leaving a session, without taking care about.

Yeah..... at least it looks not better in Logic and OS X and some of my instruments yet. Does that mean i should buy only Analog Synth and real String Instrumets yet :O I have the feeling everything is in beta today. Damn.... i wish i could turn back in time......

    A solid list. cc @johnnyive & @philschiller

  • As I said in another thread, creating a Mac profile just for music is the way to go. No alerts or notifications or emails. Just music. This is how Pro studios are set up.

But the crashes and bugs are there too.... at least for me. Logic Pro X beats everything in closing itself now. UI's are very slow and sluggy (and ugly;). I doubt windows is better. Someone should build a new OS just for music production. Then finally use a new standard rather than medieval MIDI and other old things ;) Today it's music masochismus.

  • Is the video from the session up yet?

  • @Hmtx Looks like Apple Prioritised some other session, guess we'll have to wait until tomorrow to see it...

  • "Demonstrates how to build a fully-functioning example of an Audio Unit extension and Audio Unit host using the version 3 of the Audio Unit APIs. The Audio Unit Extensions API introduces a mechanism for developers to deliver AudioUnits to users on iOS. The same API is available on both iOS and OS X, and provides a bridging mechanism for existing version 2 AudioUnits to coexist in existing AudioUnit host applications, and in future version 3 hosts."

"@johdoerr: iOS9 AU extensions can export their UI directly in the host – forget app switching between host and instruments/effects. THIS IS HUGE!" / iOS dev Johannes Dörr

I quickly summarized what I know so far: http://midiflow.com/blog/audio-unit-extensions.html

That's great thanks...so integrated plugins at last.
Less jumping from app to app lies ahead, all very welcome :)

  • The video is available now....have no time to watch it.... so people please do it ;)

  • I updated my post which new information from the session video: http://midiflow.com/blog/audio-unit-extensions.html

  • Just saw the video. This is HUGE!

  • I'll be watching it very soon.

What remains to be see ins how 'easy' it will be to implement into existing apps.
Imagine running multiple instances AU-FX, KLEVGR and Holderness FX in Cubasis and well, multiple instances of just about every music-app that is worth mentioning as longs as there is enough memory :D

  • This is Great!, now they need to bring logic with Alchemy to ios.

  • Still not sure if we can use multiple instances. If yes, that would be great. But that it seems that we still must buy 2 seperate apps for iOS and OS X is not so good. A good solution would to buy the ram and cpu pigs for desktop and the small synths for iOS then. I hope they update Logic Pro X soon too.

  • A solution for the problem, that you have to buy twice, would be app bundles that work across Mac OS and iOS.

Logic Pro will also support the new Audio Units, so yes, there will be an update.

  • Will be interesting to see how stable it is. I have no more trust in apple software these days.

  • Very exciting news - and it makes a new version of Garageband that supports AUs a virtual certainty, I feel. And maybe one day, Logic IOS too.

well,i hope there will be two versions since i dont use my Mac for music anymore (only ipad)and if that means
the ios versions are still much cheaper than their desktop counterparts...go for it ;)

  • Since the 'App Stores' are still separate for iOS and OS X i feel there is going to be separate versions for both platforms which is a good thing.

This is after all 'Developer Conference' meaning it is focusing on making it easy for the programmer to make a 'cross-platform' plug-in and when distributing the Plug-In it will most likely be distributed to 'both' AppStores.

  • Logic 'Lite' would be natural on iOS and give Cubasis a little healthy competition :D

I saw now the video and especially the last minutes was interesting for me. They will give us an update for GarageBand for sure when iOS 9 arrives. I doubt a Logic iOS anytime soon. It still looks very limited compared to the Audio Units in OS X but it's indeed a big step forward compared to IAA or Audiobus. I ask me if a full Audiobus Session could be run as Audio Unit this way. I don't see any signs of several intances here. I don't think that will be possible here. I hope i'm wrong about that. That would be the most important part for me. If not, there would be at least still a big plus for the proprietary plug-ins in Auria, NanoStudio, Cubasis.... etc. We will know soon!

Thank you so much for this! Will be interesting to see how much work will be required to make existing apps AU compatible (available to hosts). Thinking about our favorite fx and synth apps. Also, if existing DAWs will be able to sort out adding AU support.

  • and the beat goes on...
