What's your fav "dust collector"

By dust collector, I mean an app that you love but due to some lacking features you cannot use it realistically in your work flow..

Mine is Cyclop by Sugar Bytes!

Was amazed when they sent me a promocode and absolutely loved it. Could see its huge potential for my gadget creations.

But NO RECORD BUTTON, METRONOME OR ACP! Or set bar loop record..

I was dissapointed..even synths like Nave and Sunrizer have these features!

To record from Cyclop into a daw which has metronome and fixed loop, I'd need to reinstall Cubasis, GarageBand or BM2 and then acp or open in from there.

My iPad mini retina is only16gb, of which only 3.5gb is left.

To use Cyclop properly I'd need to sacrifice 350-900 mb of my device depending on what daw I chose as an AB output, and none of those daws I find useful anymore.

Therefore I cannot use Cyclop..it doesn't make sense as Egoist has acp..

I'm not gonna record Cyclop into audioshare cause it will then need trimming and all that!

Ok, rant over..looking forward to yours!

  • For me, Garageband...
Garageband has alot, sounds great, nice UI etc. etc...
But, it has many limitations also...
You can't even import a midifile to fix with :-(
    The Audiobus-support is crippled etc...

In 2011 when Garageband came out we all thought that it will have Strings (came 2012) and woodwinds/brass very soon...
In 2015 it still miss woodwinds and brass intruments... Why?

  • Saving IMaschine for the day it works with a Maschine controller.

  • +1 @solador78. that thing could have so much potential even if it just had similar functionality to the Maschine software. I'd gladly shell out $20-$30 for the sample chopping functionality of Maschine to port to iMaschine.

  • imascchine. Nice workflow, dope samples but is without a pattern sequencer, it's useless. I only use it when taking pictures of the iPad.

Too many to mention. I've got about 10GB free on my 64GB iPad Air 2 with 2200 songs & 225 (140 of those are music related) apps installed...
I'll do some housekeeping prior to iOS8.4 update not that it's needed but to keep things organised.

  • I hear you who mentioned iMaschine ..traktor dj is such a great app but this other app of native instruments could have been great..cool samples etc but that's about it. TRG in Nanostudio is even more useful..

  • Dm1,Beatmaker 2, Filtatron.Dm1 and beatmaker because of the midi sync problems and Filtatron because of the audiobus line in that never worked for me.

  • Oscilab - Really nothing like it for me, yet I haven't touched it in months. I'm not typically a "feed the machine X, take output Y and run with it" sort of composer. But it can make some wild, gnarly sounds.

  • Isem and iprophet I've virtually never used. But I'm sure they sound great.

FM4 and Cyclop and Thor and X3ta are probably my favourite synths - but rarely get used in tracks because it's such a hassle to bring audio into Gadget and gadget synths can do most things.

  • But actually the biggest one might be Seek Beats. Love the sounds and the random automation feature. But tricky to work into my my workflow.

  • Roland Sound Canvas. I really like the app , but the fact that no configuration can be saved, not even the last one when leaving the app, makes it a little used app.

  • Far too many - not their fault. I just didn't get anything done with them...

    Yup.

  • Gadget, Auria, Cubasis. Own them all since the beginning but never made one track with it.... not even a loop in the last months :( The workflow and UI are just not my taste and/or i find it not usable on my iPad Air. There are more but these seems to be good apps but not usable for me.

  • As it stands right now, I don't use any apps to bring stuff into gadget apart from Glitchbreaks and Attack

Gadget needs more sampling stuff, perhaps a strong drum synth too

Certainly don't need synths into gadget do we lol

  • I need to go back and look at Glitch breaks. It's a dust gatherer for me.

    Have you tried Sector? @touchconspiracy?

  • Regarding Roland SC, I use that a lot, but always with a .99 app which allows you to save presets for all 16 tracks..

Cool. Could you tell me if It will save a full set of Midi CCs values as a 'preset'. Ie read them in and save them then later on ping them all back out?

I'm looking for a neat way to save Gadget patches as a set of midi ccs

Great thread mr conspiracy I have 2 big disappointments (dust gatherers) :)

iSEM- glitches like crazy on my lil ol iPad2

Z3tA- used to work (I used it once) now It doesn't.

This update culture creates an unhealthy workflow.

Can midiflow do what this app can do? (I don't have the iAP yet)

  • I would have to say that Gadget was a dust collector for a while for me. I enjoyed it at first but then became frustrated by the fact you are stuck within it's walls, but now midi export is here I am happy to work with it again.

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 - it saves PCs, including, what I believe is the MSB and LSB for banks. It would probably save vol and pan too, but both of those are missing on the screen. I suspect an update is needed. It also saves the transpose setting and probably the key split, but I haven't tested that. No CCs aside from that. It's a shame it doesn't, since it's very quick to set tracks up with it.

@Carnbot - I believe it's possible with MidiFlow, but I don't have the IAP either.

  • Glitchbreaks is great for simply pasting in breaks to adjust their bpm, record a few SET bars with cuts/glitches and reverses then export to gadget. I'd say as a live tool, it's easier than sector. Yes I have sector and should revisit it. It does a lot more but doesn't have set bar record tho. Both devs are good friends and actually, I'n my opinion, the most forward thinking of the bunch.

  • Agree, ios secondary updates cause problems for many. Cakewalk are highly unprofessional and non responsive. You should upgrade to iPAD mini retina..you can get refurbished from Apple for only £200 and with a years warranty , free delivery too

  • MiMIX. Because of the way I do my stuff, I’ve literally never found a use for it.

Earhoof. Why did I buy it?

Yamaha Mobile Seq. I thought I’d take to it like water off a ducks back because I used to make a lot of my stuff on a Yamaha QY20 years ago, but I’m totally baffled by this app.

Thor. Haven’t ever opened it. Sorry, I should do.

    Same here.

Earhoof. Why did I buy it?

    Because it's awesome. Really.

    Same here. Again. :)

Thor. Haven’t ever opened it. Sorry, I should do.

Put some time aside. Thor is too good to gather dust.

  • To iMS20, Sunvox, Jasuto, I apologise to you. You have not been deleted, i shall dust you off one day

  • Gadget. Too many limitations including the terrible tiny keyboards. I like playing an app directly and just can't work with those tiny keyboards.

  • Gadget has virtual midi..use cubasis to play the keyboards or thumb jam or something..or take advantage of core midi and use external keyboard ?

...or, why not use the amazing TB Midi Stuff?
There you build you're own UI for example Korg Gadget (or just about any other Synth or Drummachine)!

TB Midi Stuff works very well and is really cheap for what you can do with it...

Build you're own UI: like this one?
