In the old days, apart from home demos you'd go into a studio to record. That gave you more time to concentrate on the music, plus you got feedback from the engineers/producers. Now we're musicians, technicians, producers and even promoters. It means (unless you're in a band) you don't have as much distance and perspective on the music you make - a good, and bad thing. That's why forums like this are so helpful.
Just bought mine today. I will let you know but my tentative answer is yes. I am itching to use it with Animoog because it has Poly-after touch. I always enjoyed the Launchpad S with apps, so I am pretty pumped.
Interested to hear how you get on with it. Do the buttons round the edge work with anything on the iPad?
I may have to investigate myself. Could be a very cool way to input music etc..
Thanks for the note. Scott Walker is an an American who became English (kinda). Perhaps we crossed in the middle of the Atlantic at some point
@johnnygoodyear,
An interesting blend of the country-esqe vocals and the left-field dronage. I think it is getting there and it almost works. It definitely conjours up a Waits-esque foreboding mood.
Here's a few suggestions:
The short delay effect on the vox detracts from the legibility, why not try just a short reverb instead ?
The vox is a tad loud in the mix (for my tastes)
There's some deeply booming bass frequencies in parts.
@Igneous1 Thanks for the notes. I am coming to the opinion that what I need is a producer. Or maybe a sound magician. I know what I want (as regards atmosphere), but rarely come close to doing what little justice my voice/the song deserves. Sometimes this irks me (of course
, but then I remind myself that production isn't my skill and while it's good to learn and get better at using the available tools I need to work on summoning the ideas/feeling I want, the words I want, etc etc and then not spend endless time trying to milk the wrong monkey.
@jocphone nice bass in your tune mate and I like the weird bouncy drum thing you have going on from 2 mins?? What the hell is it may I ask?:)
@JohnnyGoodyear interesting track mate,very sparce,I also struggled to hear every word but that will get better when u get to grips with your shiny new pro C!:D you have a great ability to create atmosphere,with the music and the images.
@igneous1 man I love that first lead sound,really peels my banana!!:D good job for ignoring your compulsion to keep tweaking!! We've all been there mate:)
@Marcel great job on the final version mate,I'm a big fan of this song and with my casual listening ears the hiss is not an issue:) the German accent thing is purely in your head mate, One thing Though im not sure if the little drop in volume on the vocal after the instrumental works for me but that's just me.Def put it on your soundcloud u crazy fool!:D
Thanks LostBoy85. Was trying to put a bit more breathing space in this track. Has been quite though provoking trying to learn a bit of restraint
The bass drum effect is very simple but one of my favourite techniques. In London (Gadget) I add the tremolo effect to a single drum track. Have the depth setting quite high and then tweak the frequency until it kind of fights with the rhythm and you get this quite subtle pulsing swells. Bit like when you were a kid mucking about with the volume knob on the radio, to the delight of the rest of the family..

Yes, with the freedom to be pretty much able to do what we like in our studios and 'portable studios', we also (on the whole) have to do it all ourselves and there are some things we are better at, than others. I try to see it all as a learning thing and try to become more proficient at even the things I'm not great at - even though someone else could do a better job (if that makes any sense).
Agree. It does/has also led me back to the idea of collaborating with others, albeit usually on a case by case or song by song basis...
Mr Johnny Goodyear,when you kicked off (Don't You Worry ),you must have said to yourself ,this ain't bad,fink ah carry on and it's pretty good ,init?---that's all that matters mate,so.(Carry- On -Johnny) Let's hear more
Wow, that was really nice and I don't speak Mandarin. Great voice and great playing.
Hi guys...
I have some catching up to do on this thread... but as always I promise i'll comment on all...
Here's my entry for this month. It's an old track that I never quite finished - so I thought it would be a good one to finish off and use to try out the new Fab Filter plugins I bought for Auria.
It's Gadget, with the only additional samples being a bit of a bass patch from Thor and the kind of 'interesting' plucked bassy lead in the middle section of the track is sampled from the wonderful Orphion app.
All feedback most appreciated - particuarly, this month, any opinions on the quality of the mix/master because i'm trying to perfect the whole Gadget > Auria thing.
It's good Matt.
Something about controlled pursuit. Perhaps that's the Orphion sound. Structured perfectly with two long chorus parts and plenty of room for the sung story to be told before, between, and after.
I find this/your music interesting because to my ears it has a first-blush genericism (tm) to it which I can trace to my lack of understanding/connection with almost all 'dance'. See how I have to put it in quotes. Don't even know what it means to me at this point. However, this doesn't sound generic to me. BUT I do want the narrative. And I want it to be genuine (not generic). Heartfelt, real. A song, but with a story to it or at least an inference of one. A small screenplay sung. I know this isn't the feedback you want as regards the mix, apologies for that. Sounds good to me, but I'm sure others will offer better insight.
All art, taste, culture, when refracted seems polluted by the personal. Today I was reading some stuff the director Michael Haneke had to say and I like (in the context of this piece) this:
"Try to create something that springs organically from your own experience. For only then does it stand the slightest chance of being genuinely interesting…that’s precisely why the film industry in the so-called first world is in such a rut. There is just so much recycling. We don’t have the capability to represent authentic experiences because there is so little we do experience. At the most basic level, all we’re concerned about here are our material possessions and sexual urges. There really isn’t much more to our lives."
That's all I got for now.
Thanks @johnnygoodyear - the chorus being at 30 seconds (for about 30 secs) and then at 3.18?
Could I ask what you mean by "Something about controlled pursuit. Perhaps that's the Orphion sound."? It sounds complimentary so i'm keen to understand what you meant
.
Tomorrow, I go through all the tracks so far... Definitely...
@Matt_Fletcher_2000 There's a lot to like in this one, the persistent groove provided by the catchy bass line, the variety of interesting drum parts. I love the plucked instrument thing from Orphion (I'll have to reinstall that one), and the "solo" is excellent - really inventive and creative piece of music.
As Johnny says the song structure is really good as well, the way the pads come in and out, the build up, the bleeps and chimes, everything works for me.
As for the mix, I haven't got any complaints, the music is all I can hear, which is how it should be.
@Martygras Thank you so much for the compliments! The piano sounds are from Korg Module's Ivory
And strings from Thumbjam!
Thanks @richardyot - very kind of you.
The pads make use of the Volcano plugin a fair bit. I had some fun with it.
@Marcel - No Happy Endings:
Reminded me at the start of Dire Straits (i'm a big fan). Then less so once your voice comes in...
This is a lovely track, beautifully balanced and very professional sounding. There one point "I left you later" where you voice perhaps stumbles over 'later'... and there's another part at the end where the vocals go weirdly low which i'm less keen on. But other than that I can't fault it really. It sounds like nothing else I know of, which is great. If you haven't already... i'd make this your thing...
@Necrome - wow we're getting a run really nice of vocal led songs.
I like this too. It reminds me a bit of the time I spent in Thailand and a band called Loso - a Thai rock/ballad type band. Do you know them? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loso
The sound, again, is perfectly balanced and the old thing is very musical and beautiful. Can't say any more really.
@AndyX - Bossa Nova Memories:
This is quite a production. It sounds like you'd had the whole orchestra turn up. I like it... It sounds very authentic. It's mixed supremely to my ears. I love the drums particularly.
What did you use?
@Matt_Fletcher_2000: good work - the mix sounds great to me!

The only comment I would make is that the bass line would benefit from a little variation, especially in the middle section with the Orphion bouncy sounds. Just as it was beginning to get to me, towards 2:45, the change to the more floaty section without that bass line was very welcome.
Great beats though!
@BvsMV - Radiance:
Like the resonant bass and the backwards string-type pads... And the plucky sounds... In fact its a bit of a journey through interesting synth patches. I guess some might say it could have a bit more of a beginning, middle and an end but to me it's quite nice as a more ambient mood piece.
@Martygras: Lovely voice and melody for a nice, sensitive sounding song.
Thanks @AlterEgo_UK - think you're spot on about the bassline actually. I thought last night on a 'last listen' that I could have at least bought it out slightly earlier (by that point writing in variation was definitely not going to happen) but I just thought 'publish or be damned' because it was late.
I have just now been listening to The Dream. I like it a lot. it has a 60s feel to it, and also a classic indie feel to it (to me). I like the slide guitar - which makes me think of the band 'The National'. Your voice is great. The lyrics are great too. In terms of personal taste, I think if I went to a gig and it was all like that i might come away thinking it was bit to sugary - but for the nice feel good song 2 thirds of the way through i'd think it was perfect.
@Jocphone: nice track (pun intended) - it reminded my somehow of On the Run by Pink Floyd (the railway track from Dark Side of the Moon) in feel but more neglected subway train, with malfunctioning electrics, rather than locomotive. That's not a slur on the sounds or track it is what was conjured in my mind when listening
I enjoyed the track.
Thanks for your comments about The Dream @Matt_Fletcher_2000 Glad you liked it

If I ever got a gig to play my 'A Multitude of One' stuff I don't think there would be much chance of it all being like that song! lol
@JohnnyGoodyear: Enjoyed the ambience of your track immensely. Your voice is well suited to this (and the piano intro was also great) but as others have said some words are difficult to hear clearly.
