New App SessionBand Drums 1
I just saw there's a new SessionBand app just for drums. It looks pretty interesting. There even seems to be some form of notation functionality so you can see the groove in rhythmic notation. Also the download size Is only around 450mb, I think. I'll wait until there's a sale before buying but I'm very curious about this app. Has anybody tried it yet? Looking forward to a TSTR demo!

Thanks!
You can download the notation for all 116 styles includes here (actually the pdf have up to 8 styles):

Thank you, that looks awesome! I have to curb my spending until mid September but then I'll definitely be getting this. I have their rock app and the ability to switch what you've already programmed into a different style is very cool. I was wondering if they'd ever do a drum only version, now there's my answer!
Yep, only as pdf book it will worth the price.
Couldn't see this in the UK app store, presumably it's not out yet.
I found it on the uk store but it was at the bottom of the list rather than at the top, despite searching for Sessionband Drums!
I just purchased it from the UK store - it seems to be on offer right now, along with all the other Sessionband apps... I'll have to wait an hour for the download though, living in the country has its downsides...
Yes, found it now - thanks.
On sale right at now €3,99.

Dang, paid full price for it yesterday, oh well. Got all the other SB apps on sale so I'm still a happy puppy. Been waiting for an SB drums app for a while.
Yeo. It's a unexpected sale. Day one, the logical thing is intro price, if you want to promote a new app (see AB remote and AB).
Yea, happy to support the devs in this case. Thought about waiting for a sale yesterday since they do a lot of sales, but decided to get it at full price anyways.
It is on sale right? $3.99
Yep.
This could be much more useful than drum apps that you spend all your time creating the beat, rather than arranging the whole song.
Awesome, I'm going to buy it in a minute when I'm not on my phone (16gb 4s vs 64gb air, no room on phone!)
@mrufino1 Exported/Audio copied an 8 bar loop and had to trim the front and then stretch it in Auria to make it fit (Doctor). No big deal, but worth being aware...the other side of that was that it was/is a very pretty shuffle.
Well, It's enough to (technically) introduce artifacts by stretching. Whether we can hear it or not we'll see... Or hear, I meant.
I guess I should just relent and get it.
I usually do have to trim the exports a bit. No biggie but it would be nice if we didn't have to.
Audioshare trims really nice tho.
Actually, huge disappointment in this app. Moving the tempo at all introduces huge artifacts (it sounds like there's backwards hi hats going on) and you are limited to a small range of tempos anyway. each loop also only has a few parts, unless I'm missing something. The video looked a lot more promising than the reality for me. Hopefully there will be an update that fixes these issues. Anyone else seeing the same?
@mrufino you could do the timestretch in Auria. or TwistedWave, or Anytune Pro and probably get better results. In Auria it should also be really simple to trim the samples by setting the snap settings on the timeline.
As for the beats, one way around the limited selection is to import into Abu Dhabi in Gadget and then you can easily create variations.
Otherwise an alternative might be Rock Drum machine 2, which Marcel pointed out to me in this month's SOTMC thread.
I had a quick play yesterday and a couple of things stood out to me. I made up a short rhythm using the editor then went to try out some different beat styles - I was caught out when I clicked on the style "demo" and it just loaded the demo over my rhythm and I immediately lost it. I didn't think the other SB apps did this but I just tried the Jazz 1 and it did the same... I would rather the demo button played a sample, not loaded into the app. Also, while most of the style genres have 6-12 different styles within them, the "Pop" genre has 50!! And they are labelled "Pop 1", "Pop 2" etc. It's going to take some effort to remember what they all are! I thought the mixer faders could be used to isolate one part of the kit (eg just the bass & snare) but you can still hear the other parts even when they're muted (I guess because it's acoustic drums with mics, noise bleed).
Still, I think it could be a useful app, obviously more niche than some of the other SB apps, I use the Jazz & Blues ones almost daily for guitar practice. They could do with some UI improvements, some of the prompts (e.g. when creating a new file) seem counter-intuitive to me. What I'd really like is some more "mainstream" chord options (like just a plain minor or major seventh without all the b5#7's etc!) as many of the esoteric chords don't fit what I want - but as they are sample based, it can't be done without recording a load more samples. C'est last vie.
Yes, that's probably true of timestretch. As for trimming though, you have to cut it free first, there's noise before the kick drum hit and the end is there as well (for reverb trails I guess). It shouldn't be too hard for them to fix the export, although I don't know if they update these apps.
Also true, but not if you're looking to have it should like it's a drummer playing. For drums that are more of a breakbeat or electronic style that's a good idea and I will try it (even though that doesn't really factor into my music much, it will be fun to try).
I have that app and it is cool, but no mistaking that it's a drum machine, ever though the variety with the randomness and fills is fantastic. If he ever put round robin samples and some"feel" templates in it would be incredible.
I wish Apple would just add the drummer plugin from the desktop version of garage band to iOS, that would be the perfect songwriting tool. Or jamstix finally did the iOS version they've hinted at. Someday.
Hafta say I feel that SB (yep, of course I have them all) are less than the sum of their parts (for me). However, I do write stuff with them sometimes and that has made them worth the price of admission. I guess they just feel so close to transcending that falling short of that makes them a little flat.
For the drums I can see that if you lay/write the whole piece out in the app and then export there are fewer problems with unwanted noises (if you're prepared to stay pretty close to original tempos). As regards cutting loops I have found the most successful way of doing this is bring them in to Bilbao. But bejesus I wish Gadget would take audio like what they did done one day promise...
I agree. I'm a little disappointed too. And I wish they sliced these beats already or at least used a better algorithm for tempo changing. The way it is now the very slightest change from original tempo sounds absolutely unusable. And I don't think I would want to actually build a whole sequence in SB at all. I can't see myself getting used to that workflow ever. The way it is now it's a bunch of useful drum loops with notation. Good for practicing/jamming along or exporting and manipulating in other apps.
I honestly think if the whole Session Band apps were in MIDI format, there would not be an issue timestrech or bpm adjustment. The size would also be so much smaller!
Why do they choose audio instead of midi?
I think midi is a whole different approach, then you're dealing with multisamples to get more realistic sound, and that becomes ram intensive. That's what superior, addictive, and bfd all do. That being said, I think a cut down kit still would work well on iOS, some of the ez drummer kits were around 300mb.
Still, the drummer from osx garage band would be the best songwriting tool for me on iOS, so I hope it hits at some point (pardon the pun!).
The session band app is very disappointing, I think I'm done with their products. I probably won't request a refund, it's only $4 and maybe they'll improve it at some point, but I'm not holding my breath.
I got the whole bundle for like $6 dollars and I really have enjoyed the acoustic guitars. Really amazing recordings for what I paid.
I guess I didn't have high expectations and that helped me a lot. But seriously,I would have never afforded to pay a session guitarist like that or even record in such a studio.
Apple released iOS 8.4.1 maybe is little bit better with change tempo matter?
Is there something in the update that would affect it? I don't think it's an OS issue, but you never know. Anyway, my life has been fine without it this week, so I'll probably just delete it since it takes up so much space. It's a good idea that feels unfinished.
