When does your work get done?
I've been alone here in Maine for a few weeks now and intended/imagined I would write at least half a year's worth of songs, but have had trouble getting going on anything, BUT often find myself in the last hour of the day (usually between 1 am and 2 am) finally interested/motivated.
I know a lot of great music has been written after midnight, but when do you find yourself most feeling like switching on?
Comments
When I have neither the time or access to play or write.
On the train to and from work it never fails that within the last five minutes of the thirty minute train ride things get cooking and i am forced to walk home tapping away on the ipad as i dodge cars and people for fifteen minutes, then slipping into the crapper at home and ignoring my wife for twenty minutes while i make fake grunting noises.
Definitely after midnight. It's problem of mine. But the city is silent, no one disturbs me...
Also around midnight for me too. I think it has to do with the fact that the left side of my brain realizes that it is finished for the day so righty comes out to play.
Generally, from midnight until 2 or 3 am for me.
I tend to have ideas, inspiration, etc. late at night as well. However, work really gets done when I have several hours to sit down and actually try to structure something out of those ideas. This is usually on weekends, during the pm (e.g. right now )
after i lie down in bed trying to go to sleep
The reason I appreciate the iOS music scene is the portability factor - any time inspiration strikes I can immediately get to it and go... no cables, wiring, external devices (save headphones, and later a decent vocals mic) to slow down the process.
Not often enough ... But that bit's getting better.
As for time of day, I'm all over the map. To put it another way, I WANTED to be Harrison Ford when I grew up. Han Solo AND Indiana Jones AND Allie Fox rolled into one? Yes sir, sign me up! Then I saw an interview in the late eighties where he described himself as a "list" person who enjoyed writing up a list of things to be done the next day. As that sunk into my melon, I realized that while Han and Indy remained gods to me, I most certainly would NEVER again want to be Harrison Ford.
Damn good pilot and one tough sunuvabitch, though.
As a father of two kids, I don't even sit down to play until around 10pm. Very small window for me, which is why most of my stuff is quick "one-take" tracks, rather than full compositions.
No set the. All depends on my work schedule and family time.
Know some people who have flown with him in England and apparently he did a hell of job to walk away from this one:

I'm definitely most creative first thing in the morning, the brain is refreshed and the coffee is flowing. By afternoon I get distracted easily, and by night my ears tend to be fried.
I'm very fortunate in that i'm able to work on my music full-time, so I'm working at it pretty much most of the day.
Saying that, my old dog needs a lot of attention these days, so the iPad has become invaluable as I can sit next to wherever she is and fire up my mad Gadget project.
The majority of my music gets done after 9pm and weekends but any other time during the day I happen to get inspiration/free time.
I am fortunate to be able to work from home most of the time so if I suddenly get some inspiration I can grab my ipad and record a rough draft using my acoustic guitar (which is next to in my home office/studio) or even hum a melody into it as a reminder. If I actually loaded up an app (other than something to record in) I would probably get too distracted from work. Occasionally I have done some stuff during lunch breaks.
If I am working away, the iPad goes with me and I sometimes manage to compose or work on existing tracks in my hotel room in the evenings.
An hour or two in the evenings is what I have. In a way knowing that time is limited can help to keep me focused.
I work from home, but when I do music in the evening its in a different room, it's nice to be away from the computer. And I find on the iPad I don't tend to check emails or the Internet, whereas in my office those things can be distracting.
My work computer is off in the evenings.
On the way to work with a coffee. Late at night. Occasionally at lunch time.
The mobility of the iPad is a big help, we're on a seaside holiday this week but I can still work on my SOTMC entry when the powers-that-be allow me an hour of chill out time here and there.
Somewhere between midnight and 6 a.m. I get the best things done. No one disturbs you at these times.
This is also a good place to be creative
After midnight for sure! Or, like others have said, at very inopportune times, which is why iOS has been such a great thing for me. If I get an idea while driving I can pull over and do a really fast rough in garageband, or if I can't then a quick humming demo in Audioshare with my Bluetooth headset.
After 11, especially if I have box of After Eight's at hand
And came bounding onto stage at Comic-Con four months later. Not too bad for a septuagenarian
Afternoons for me - mornings my head's too sleepy, evenings my everything's too knackered. Saying that though, the only chance I have for music is after everyone's gone to bed...
Returning to topic, I should mention that a recent development is that I have the house to myself 4 days a week now, with nobody home until the boy gets off the bus at 4pm, so once some freelance work and/or the day's chores are completed, the world is my iOyster. Might do a cover of Def Leppard's "Wasted" using Gadget today just 'cause fun
@eustressor I find my singing, such as it is, improves tremendously in an empty house...
Agreed. This happened to me just last week. Not only free from distraction, but free from the fear of distraction and able to just focus.
Also finally occurred to me to work on vocals one chorus or bridge at a time, rather than always sing every part all the way through like a basement punk/thrash band. That was a big plus for my vox, too, but then, that's a story for another thread, like how I hate lists
@eustressor It's a tough one. I do believe that one should sing the song a hundred times to get the muscle memory down, but then, yes, much as I believe in the accidents and emotion of performance, in the end being able to jigsaw-puzzle it does tend to end up with a better result...for me (me, me) the empty house also gets me mostly past any lingering self-consciousness and I really let-it-go which is where the good (and the awful) stuff usually lives...
