Does your app lineup matter to you?
So I've finished watching Doug's MKSensation video and it got me to resurrect Neo Soul Keys from my app cloud storage. Here's my thought: back in 2013, I was more productive completing tracks and songs with a line up of apps that I have replaced with newer ones. I love playing iM1, Synthmaster, Diode 108, they are fantastic, but I'm not as song-writey for me this year. I had replaced Neo Soul with iLectric to save space and it's got great sounds and more pianos, but I'm not hitting that spark in my head like I did when I was more focused on SoundPrism Pro and Sunrizer. So here's my question for the bus: do you have certain line-ups of apps that help your creativity? Kind of like a favorite studio or a lucky guitar? Or does it matter to you?
Comments
For sure. I have my home page/second page arranged with most used/favorite apps
Cubasis/AB>Patterning>ToneStack>synth basses (usually iMini or iSem)>synths (Animoog, Korgs, Thor)>effects (surprisingly, Soundscaper is at the top of that list. I've used that to death & love it)
Everything else goes into fun-time folders so I'm not distracted when trying to accomplish something. If I can't see it I won't think about 'just trying something out...'
I find that I try to make full tracks with layed out apps but in the end the magic doesnt happen until i just throw all my stems, bits and pieces, thrown out bits, overally long jams etc all into a bag and dump them into Samplitude on the PC and just start mixing and matching, timestretching and pitchshifting and mashing things together that were not conciously planned to go together. This always turns out the best for me despite my best efforts to lay out a process of x apps running in x way. I guess I am just mashing up my own failures but they always turn out better that way in the end. Too impatient maybe, but it happens so often now I just accept it like winter.
@NoiseHorse I hear you very clearly, especially this month. And Neo is a great example. I can't play keys much, but I get some feel from Neo I don't get much elsewhere. Module's Cinematic Piano has the same effect on me. One or two others, but not many when I look through the app stack.
I can often make things sound or work in a professional manner, like some real musician or similar, and find myself spending time doing that some days and feel good about the achievement. Like finishing a jigsaw puzzle. But it's never something that makes me add up to more than the sum of anything.
The best song-writing app in the world is sitting with a girl in the coffee shop. Or really understanding regret for a moment. Feeling good to be alive. Feeling invisible. Seeing hope disappear on a railroad platform. Being angry at something that needs fixing. Going fast. Getting a brief sense of the pattern that exists in almost everything. Not being able to explain, but knowing.
Five days left in August, still optimistic.
iElectric through Guitar effects, Leonard Cohen and a bottle of Wodka on a stormy night.....never fails!
I guess my advantage is that if I want to dig out my old gear and dust it off, all I have to do is reload it from my purchase history. Much easier than finding some old guitar I sold off to a pawnshop. I'll see what happens... I appreciate your respective perspectives!
I've posted (at length) about this in the SOTMC thread, but Gadget has certainly been a great songwriting tool for me, much to my surprise. I expected it to be solely useful for EDM type stuff but it actually produces a great range of sounds and the ease-of-use makes it very powerful.
Loopy is also a really useful sketchpad for working with guitars, you can record little ideas and create crude arrangements to build up the parts of a song.
Chordion, Samplr, Nanostudio, Gadget, Egoist, Thumbjam.. But all multitracked into Reason on my mac/pc computer.
Adding elastic drums and patterning soon hopefully
I like that idea of keeping apps I need on a page and having everything else in folders. Going to try that later.
Edit: I just made a folder called music essentials that now resides in the launcher (taskbar? Whatever it's called). Amazing how a simple suggestion can make so much sense! Thanks for that.
Hey guys....I really, really appreciate all the support of our new stuff: Neo-Soul Keys and MKSensation......
One thing as a developer and a musician that I'm a bit confused about. We are thinking of ways to reduce the size of our libraries and keeping the quality. It's not an easy task at all.
We always assumed guys who do Audio and production, purchased an iPad exclusively for the task of audio and production, so we didn't think the size of our library was that outrageous.
Please help us understand this.....
I don't think the libraries really are outrageously sized at all, Neo Soul Keys with all the expansions comes in at 900mb, which seems reasonable for a sample-based instrument.
I think the problem is just that storage space is really limited on mobile devices. After running out of space on my previous 64GB device I have gone for 128GB this time around, and many musicians eventually do this, but there are still a lot of users who have much less storage so it's more difficult for them.
I don't think the size of your library is outrageous. The only one point I would say is, that if there are sounds that I never use and they are taking up lots of space, then that is annoying.
If you are making add-ones. Please don't just make the app bigger. Let us use our space for instruments that we choose.
@richardyot That makes sense. There are some things we can do to reduce the space. We just always want to keep the quality. Currently we are using CAF Lossless, but at 24-Bit.....We possibly could make sure to use good dithering and take it down to 16-bit. That is almost 1/2 the size right there.
It also seems @richardyot that people rather enjoy In-App purchases, but we noticed companies like Korg, just offer a one price and not trial.
What makes you guys so confident in purchasing an app, without trials.
Usually guys like The SoundTestRoom
I think what was meant was rather than having all of the samples download, then unlocking them with purchases (sample tank does this with its base sounds but not add ons like miroslav, samplemoog, etc- those get added in only if you buy them), just have them download individually. So if someone didn't want "warm pad" as part of their sounds, they wouldn't download that set of samples, saving space.
I thought your model was pretty fair actually, as I remember you can try your app for free (and the expansion packs), but it comes up with a nag after a few minutes play. That gives the user the chance to hear the sounds and play the app before buying. Pretty cool IMO.
KORG apps are more pricey, although in Gadget there are also IAPs as well. I guess a lot of people would think twice about spending $40 on an app, unless it was really good. Most of the KORG apps are pretty good which is presumably why they are successful. It helps that reviewers such as the Sound Test Room do detailed video demos.
Yeah that's what I meant lol
@richardyot Good point! We are new to this world, so it's good learning!
@GospelMusicians please DON'T change or compromise the sound quality of these apps, that is what makes them special. I understand conventional wisdom says people can't tell the difference between various compromises, but there's something special about Neo Soul Keys (and now MKS) that makes me make better music than other apps. I'll make room on my IPad, no problem, just please don't cheapen up that sound. If you did you'd be like everybody else.
@NoiseHorse That's exactly what I needed to hear
@GospelMusicians There is nothing inherently wrong with your size (Doctor), but we appaholics accumulate (it's what we do) and there will always come a time when things must be culled.
I have taken Neo off and put it back a dozen times on my different iPads because it carries some of the biggest overhead for something I don't use all the time. This does mean that there are times when I would prefer to use Neo but opt for something else because Neo is in the garage but the other smaller organ sound from something else is right there when I need it.
I would even go further and say that I think I would have bought more of the IAP Neo options if I didn't associate the app with its size. This is (pardon me, but s'true) a brand issue. My hind brain considers your stuff best-of-breed, but -to carry on with my boring automotive analogy- I also rationalize that I don't drive my Ferrari every day....
Interesting marketing puzzle/opportunity...
Choice of dl size.
Keeping quality as high as possible, please don't compromise there! I like The SampleTank solution where not only the add ons are additional downloads, but users can delete and redownload them any time. That really makes sense and I wish some other apps like BeatHawk would offer this. Sample based apps with add ons can get huge.
Yup. That might work. Would love the option.
The other force-multiplier is third party apps. Since I fell in love with Navichord driving Neo, Neo spends a lot more time out in the sunlight....
So perhaps the In-Apps, once purchased can be downloadable, instead of just activating it.
Yes...please! Even the ability to delete those that come free initially would help.
I used to, but these days I've got so many apps I either try random combinations when noodling and experimenting, or a range of trusted combos to suit a particular style or result I have in mind.
@monzo ya I've done the same thing this year, but my result was scattered music. I've noodled my year away. Neo ought to help get me straight. It's an app that has knobs you can fiddle with, but for me that app is more about playing than twiddling knobs. Good luck to you monzo.
Thanks, yes my year has been pretty noodle based too
