  • That is kinda sexy. I have "Concepts" and like it a LOT.

    Procreate is also quite large.

  • @Alexandernaut Just bought the app. Congrats. Beautifully executed and an instant winner!

  • Looks very interesting. Please iPhone version soon...

  • Woah, just wired it up to some Synthmaster pads with patterning along for the ride...

    ...this is awesome

I think it should be possible to send MIDI from Fugue Machine to ScaleGen, and from ScaleGen to a synth (app, hardware, PC software) that has different MIDI channels for each note. Or directly from Fugue Machine to Scala on the PC, and from Scala to a synth.

I haven't decided yet to buy Fugue Machine, so I cannot try it out. Scl or tun file support would be great of course, but if not I think this workaround should work anyway.

    +1

Some of the fugue sequences work great with SynthMaster presets; even with some presets with arps. While Fugue is running, I play with the X/Y pads in SynthMaster and the modulation wheel. Fantastic!

I requested a universal version too

  • Bought it. Sounds very interesting. 12 hrs at work then I'm gonna fugue the weekend

  • Got it last night and got into it straight away - Great Job, so much fun and productivity rolled into one

  • This is by far the best app to be released since Audiobus and Soundprism. This is innovation. If anybody is interested, go look up the theory of counterpoint and you will understand why this concept is so utterly brilliant.

Thanks, I can now put away my book of "The study of counterpoint" and experiment with Fugue instead :)

  • I will concur that both pads or arps bring this into another realm altogether. Splendidly dreamy comes to mind .

  • Got some interesting results with it last night - good for soundscape pad type stuff and simple arps, controlling multiple apps gets a bit tangled though - using four apps meant I had 16 instances of the sequence going at once. Having the option to split these into separate channels will cut this down to just 4 and provide a bit of breathing space, so looking forward to the update.

  • How does the midi in work? I don't see any way to 'record' midi input data?

  • edited October 2015

I gave in and bought it, even before Doug's review (which I told myself I wasn't going to do...). I'm not usually one for "generative" apps, I generally want more control, but this is very very nice, and changing stuff on the fly can be very cool. I just had a nice sequence going with an acoustic guitar on iM1.

Midi In is only for sync and program changes. I am finding that simple notes tend to work best, so it is not difficult to enter a few and let the app do most of the work.

  • Good call Phil999. Midi in to ScaleGen works fine, as it does with Thumbjam (with Input Sale Lock on). In fact, with Thumbjam you can use Fugue to create a basic riff and then play on the top of it. Very neat.

Really fast first test in gadget with a random pattern, during lunch break yesterday,
with patterning controling bilbao (probability High Hats ! )
No editing except for separating the 4 midi tracks (very easy with the selection tool)

I though I could share the result here

Can't wait to have time to dive deeper !

  • @pierre Innarestin'. Thanks for sharing your lunch!

  • I could not resist this app any longer.

It's the first time I've also encountered and iOS 'Glitch' that started to puzzle me like a lot?!?

(Does iOS put background apps to sleep automatically if there is no activity even if the app is producing sound and receiving midi? Background Audio is enabled in Lorentz).

I was using Fugue Machine to drive Lorentz recording the output to AudioShare using IAA.

Since Fugue Machine has a nice slider that allows for quick transposition I decided to record a longer performance straight into AudioShare.

It worked fine in the beginning but after around 45 seconds the output from Lorentz dropped.(tried a few more times same again). I have no problems performing longer pieces, it's just that AudioShare stops recording Loerentz after ~1 minute.(it continues to record the internal mic instead).

Could this be iOS that is playing tricks on me?
The performance is simply holding down the finger on the screen and moving it up and down to transpose...

Memory/CPU should not be an issues (Air 2 iOS9.0.2 ~15GB free space on the iPad no other apps running).

Well, maybe it's just a sign that I should be doing something else today instead of being 'put into a trance' by the melodies that Fugue Machine is capable of creating :D

I will try with some other apps later and see if this is only related to Lorentz...

There is no indication in Fugue Machine as to how many notes it is outputting at once?
(It could be that the Midi-Buffer in Lorentz gets all wonky and causes it to drop producing sound).

Oh well, I still do enjoy using Fugue Machine :)

OK, it's a cool app but has some pretty fundamental limitations at the moment. Without any way to import a midi file or record virtual midi you're stuck manually entering everything in the piano roll. It's not a deal killer for me, but something folks need to be aware of before they purchase. Hopefully the Dev will add at least one import ability in the future. Hacking the presets to add your own midi data isn't out of the realm of possibility, but I haven't tried that yet.

  • I have yet to try it but using midiflow you could assign note ranges to different apps... Curious if anyone has done this yet.

Ah interesting, I haven't got that one...will have a look...

  • An indication of the octave (number) you're entering notes in would be nice!

  • Is everything in this app based on 4/4 time signatures? Can you select how many beats are in each midi loop?

  • edited October 2015

Fugue Machine triggering Cthulhu triggering (...add your synth or sample tool of choice) = WTF!
Now switch in between a midi modulator..... WTF X 2 ;)
This as AU with several instances would be great.
I mean it´s possible to do similar things with other tools but not so fast and easy. Great App.

  • You can go from 1 beat up to 8x4 beats, and anything between! Also you don't have to loop the first beat, you can loop any selection.

  • @yowza You can set the beat range, so this can easily be set to 3, 5, 7 beats, whatever.

@coloobar You really only need a handful of notes to generate something interesting, so editing the piano roll is not difficult, and you can edit on the fly, adding, deleting and moving notes, which can add variety to a particular sequence, or help you come up with something new.

Has this app swing? ....and user scales?

  • Correction for my post, you can go down to 1/4 beats, so fractions of a beat rhythms.

  • Not a swing percentage but you can set dotted or triplet feels for some (or all) of the playback heads.
