Facelift to FL Studio Mobile app UI

Received a Dev Response to my review saying the UI is going to change quite a bit soon -

AU is not on the table yet

Just the same old blurb in a new iteration... They bit off more than they could ever chew in going cross platform and they are stuck. No need to join their forum as you will be banned when not hailing IL but stating facts and issues...

  • Hard to believe FLSM was once my go-to DAW. Now I needed to do a search to make sure I still have that dinosaur installed on my iPhone.

It took them years to bring FL Studio to Mac because the technology wasn't ready for them to port it.

I love their Lifetime Free Updates of licensed version and Unlimited Free Trial version (equivalent to "FL Studio All Plugins Edition" that never expires with just one limitation from the licensed version - we cannot open saved projects in demo version).

It wasn’t the technoloy so much as that Fruity Loops was written with some obscure tools if I remember correctly.

Looking forward to seeing the redesign

FL Studio is written in Delphi which was more suited to Windows environment in the past but is now cross-platform native compilation compatible (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android) and also in Assembly for some performance-intensive modules.

I remember reading on their site sometime back that they started planning to port FLS to Mac after Macs with Intel chip architecture were released (combined with the above delay in rewriting some code).

On another note, Steinberg is getting rid of the dongle in Cubase soon. No hopes of seeing it on the Mac AppStore, though.

If you are not allowed to post anything negative on their forums, just post a negative review on the AppStore stating the issues you are experiencing. That would count much worse against their apps and will draw their attention.

  • I was beta testing FLSM a long time ago (seems like a lifetime). They still haven’t addressed things that were brought up back then. Too bad because there’s definitely something there.

This happened to me with Oscilab and, of course, the infamous MixBox debacle. FLSM is showing as purchased however. Wonder if it’s some issue with the App Store?

I did both and they couldn‘t have cared less. They‘re just a shabby company. ymmv.

If your device or Apple ID is set to require passcode or touch ID for payment, you could try tapping on the price, and see if the amount changes in the payment popup. That setting seems to be gone in iPadOS 15; I can still find it in iOS 12.5 under iTunes & App Store–>Password Settings. The setting is still active on my iPadOS 15 device, so I have to authorize all purchases, even free.

@purpan2 I hesitate to recommend it since it could have a financial impact. But apps are known to get into a state where the App Store waits to check if you own it until after you agree to pay. You go through all the steps to pay, and only after you do that does it come up to tell you that you already own it.

I have been through that at least 20 times and have never been charged. But, ymmv!

If you do decide to try, make absolutely sure you're signed in to the same Apple ID as when you purchased the app and find proof of purchase if possible in case you need to get a refund.

One other thought occurs to me. I think the current FLSM is a separate app from the one they released in the very beginning. That old one was basically a rebranding of the MusicStudio app and looked totally different from the current app. If that's the app you purchased, you will actually be charged, I believe.

That "Pay Again..." is a misleading dialog in the AppStore manifest forever (bad control flow). You just have to tap Pay and it will popup another dialog saying that you already purchased the item and just tap again to re-download the item.

(If you get charged again for whatever reason, just file a Refund Request and the money will be credited back to your account in a few hours)

In this case it's possible that what was purchased is indeed a different app, if it was long enough ago. They forked to a re-written app, and made the old one $999.99 in the App Store for several years so that owners of the original could still download it but no-one new (in their right mind at least) would purchase it.

Unless I'm mistaken, the fork occurred with FL Studio Mobile 3, released December 2016. If the purchase was before then, all bets are off the table.

So I spent a little time with the latest FLSM and it’s not bad. They’ve added Files App access which was a big issue for me. If they add AU some day I’d definitely use this more often.

I purchased FLSM when it was originally launched along with IAPs. I did not have to re-purchase any later versions of it and I'm currently on the latest version 3.6.17 with all the IAPs intact.

The oldest (forked) version in the history shows as 3.5.0 released Feb 12, 2021.

It is prolly an AppStore glitch that @purpan2 is experiencing.

At the time you could update to the new, rewritten version for free, but it was a one-way trip. All projects on the old version would be lost. I know for certain that it was a separate app and that both versions existed in parallel in the App Store, the outdated one being re-priced to $999.99.

I don't care about it enough to take the time to look up references, but I believe there are old threads here that can confirm this. Take my word for it or not, but I maintain there's a possibility that this is not an App Store glitch. If it were me I would risk just going through the purchase process and get a refund if it turns out I was charged. But I maintain that there's a risk of being charged and a small risk of not being granted a refund.

  • Thanks for all the appstore advice.I’ve now checked most things, but I’m not brave enough to hit the purchase button. Oddly, the app is installed on my ipad, and when I search for it on the appstore it shos the « open » button. But it doesn’t appear in the purchased list, either on iphone or ipad.
