Upgrading from 11” to 12.9”” iPad for AUM and AUv3 : would I notice a big difference?
Greetings. I’m currently using an 11” iPad. With my middle aged eyesight and fat fingers, I sometimes find AUv3 interfaces a little fiddly even when I expand them as much as possible on screen.
If I were to upgrade to a 12.9” iPad, would the interface of AUM and the AUv3 plugins I use appear bigger, or they be the same size with just “room for more stuff” on the screen?
To give two examples of apps I like where the controls are a little small even when zoomed all the way out: ID700 and Mononoke.
I am otherwise happy with my 11” iPad. Would I notice a big difference with a bigger screen? I’m not concerned about processor power.

Depends on the app and how it scales. In most cases I’d say yes, dense UIs are a bit easier to use/see on a bigger screen. I think the UI of AUM scales as well; I kind of wish I had the option of a denser view of AUM, I was hoping when I got my 12.9 that I’d be able to fit more channels on the screen.
Thank you. That helps.
Apps with dense UI's will probably still be a bit of a navigation chore. But if you use Apple's Pencil on the screen you may be able to choose small targets more easily.
Fellow middle aged sausage fingered AUM user here. I did the 11 to 12.9 move earlier this year and it really made a difference for me. Much easier to use, especially as a GeoShred user as I was able to increase the number of frets and still have a more useable surface. @NeuM is correct, a Pencil also makes a difference.
Hadn't thought of the pencil route. This is another good option. Thank you.
I’ve had to use it myself on occasion when I couldn’t quite choose a fine setting otherwise.
Only at the beginning….after that it will become that old iPad I own.
With my eyesight I’d hate to go back to the 11”. If you want to save money get a refurbished Pro2 from Apple or used from B&H Photo.
I still kick myself for not getting the 2017 12.9 when it was last available back in June from the Apple Refurbished Store. The 256gb WiFi-only model was only $589. The used prices elsewhere are pretty high.
My eyesight, especially seeing close-up, keeps getting worse and worse. Can't use an iPad Mini or iPhone to make music any longer.
Last checked 2021/6/7 & today: Lowest Prices on the US Apple Refurbished Store (WiFi-only Models)(Some models are no longer available):
New (WiFi-only Models):
I’m 69 w a 125% -150% reading glasses prescription. I went 12.9 w an Apple Pencil.
My eye sight is sketch. Its like a surreal cartoon. Sensitive to lights. Peoples windows at night time make it seem like a Harry potter house or the house in bloodbourne. Where if it sees you it depletes your energy. If people open a coke fridge for example. Its like ahhh. Back to the vampire abode. Have to make do with the additional ipad mini. Its just for drums and samples though ( I think )
I'm planning to look into options for denser view in AUM.
That would be great! BTW I for one would happily pay an IAP or an upgrade fee similar to the Loopy Pro model for improvements like that. I get a ton of value out of AUM.
Just curious -- would this mean a denser UI for everyone, or an option between a denser and a larger UI? I realize some people want more stuff on their screens, but some of us are looking for a little more space and ease of use.
The idea so far is a "zoom out mode" which would show all channels at 50% zoom and in two rows. So it would quadruple the number of channels shown, but would be very fiddly and difficult to use
May I suggest 'blob mode' for the tracks?
Ie. minimize the tracks to only show the 'input circle' with M/S/R and label?
This way we could fit a lot of tracks on screen at once with quick access to everything.
Tapping on a 'blob' could expand the whole track in an overlay window.
This could pave the way for easy track2track drag-n-drop routing in 'blob mode'.
(SunVox has a nice 'tap-n-hold source and tap destination' to make or break a connection)
Mixing could be simple swipe up/down on blot to adjust level and swipe left/right to pan etc.
Have to say that the 'donut/sqaure approach' to tracks be it audio or midi is a quite smart move...
Cheers!
