    Yes, iOS 13.2+ only, sorry... at some point, the testing / compatibility overhead for older iOS versions just becomes very troublesome compared to the very small minority of users still running old versions (sounds harsh I know...)

    (in Animoog, go to "Configuration" and enable "Background Audio", then under "MIDI", "Output", enable "Xequence Destination". In Xequence, "..." -> MIDI / Recording, enable "MIDI In" and in "Sources", enable "Xequence Destination" and disable "Animoog Z" (the other way around would probably also work). Create an instrument in Xequence, set Destination to Animoog Z, enable MPE. Hit Record. Go back to Animoog Z. Play. Go back to Xequence. Stop. Play. Fun! ;) )

    I just did a quick test and what is playing back does not sound like what was recorded, the pitchbend and glissando are absent. Are those working for you when recording Animoog Z’s output and and sending it back? I have the Animoog z track set to be MPE. And Animoog z’s midi in and out are set to MPE.

  • Here is an example. Perhaps, I set something up wrong?

    Additional note, Xequence’s visible orientation is 180 degrees different from Animoog’s

    Thanks, good catch. I'm not sure what's going on here -- most synths do glissando as soon as the incoming notes overlap. However, even when setting "Length correction" to 0 in Xequence and even when manually lengthening the recorded notes, Animoog still does not do glissando on playback.

    I wonder if this is something that Animoog simply does not do with incoming MPE data?

    Could you retry with a "raw" MIDI recorder?

    Anyway, I'll investigate too!

    @espiegel123 regarding the orientation problem: When you run Animoog Z alone, does it rotate correctly when you rotate the phone 180 degrees while Animoog Z is on the screen, or is it "stuck"? (I can't easily install it myself because all of my iPhones are on iOS 14.2 and Animoog Z requires 14.4...)

  • @espiegel123 couldn't resist and investigated even though I'm already in evening chill mode ;) Animoog Z seems to use CC 84 (Portamento) to control glissando between notes... if you look at your recording, you should see those controllers -- open the pianoroll, then select a single note, then select # 84 from the DATA TYPE menu -- there's a single data point at the start and end of each note.

    Why this isn't working is still a mystery but I'm on it :)

  • @espiegel123 final news on investigation -- it looks like the NoteOn, NoteOff and Portamento events are recorded or played back in a different order by Xequence. More (and hopefully a fix) tomorrow. Thanks again for the good find.

    Great. Geert has mentioned that Animoog (and many other MPE synths are very sensitive to event timing and order)…which is why he wrote MTR (whose code might be worth looking at) because none of the MPE-supporting sequencers on iOS we’re doing Animoog justice.

    Right back at the beginning of the 2.3 beta @Carnbot used Gert's free MIDI Tape Recorder to record his MPE Animoog Z performance and then brought that data into Xequence for editing. That particular workflow worked well for him.

    I'm not suggesting that's an ideal workflow but it's good to know that we now have an environment for editing MPE data on iOS. From the sound of things, @SevenSystems is on the case ref Animoog but I'm personally not averse to a two-stage process involving MTR if that's where we get to.

    Working with MPE on the desktop is a barrel shoot too. MIDI 2.0 can't come around quick enough as there's a real lack of standardisation with the way different vendors are implementing MPE.

    No worries, I was testing some performance recorded from my QuNexus. From my initial test it sounded quite similar to when using MTR to play it back, but I wasn't doing a deep comparison.

    Oh be assured, I won't be able to have a good night's sleep until this works "directly" as expected :)

    (it might seem trivial to "just" record and play back the MIDI "as is", but in practice it is not -- Xequence internally converts all MIDI into an abstraction which is quite far away from the original MIDI bytes, and then back to MIDI bytes on playback. Getting this whole process to be transparent (data-wise) and still keeping everything nicely editable is unfortunately quite non-trivial).

    @espiegel123 got it. As it seems, AniMoog Z is extremely sensitive to the timing of the Portamento (CC 84) events (as you mentioned). Xequence has a PPQ of 24576 (several orders of magnitude more accurate than most DAWs), but that doesn't seem to be nearly enough. I've bumped the PPQ to 442368 and that instantly fixes it.

    Odd though. Does Animoog Z record and playback portamento correctly with any other DAW or sequencer? (MTR doesn't count because it probably doesn't abstract the data and timing in any way ;) )

  • I don’t think we found any apart from MTR that could record and playback perfectly, on iOS at least. Even MultiTrackStudio, which has supported MPE recording and editing for some time, could not record Animoog exactly.

    Interesting. Well, event times (ticks) are handled as 64-bit anyway so in theory I can set any ridiculously high PPQ I'd like... only the project files would become larger as they're JSON... (I come from the C64 8-bit era so one byte more is one byte too many in my book 😂)

    Maybe if two incoming events are so close together that they would get the same timestamp (ticks), Xequence can do some heuristics to see which order they came in and then just add or subtract one tick for one of the events.

    That's been my experience too but MPE recording and playback works really well in Ableton (as long as the MPE instrument in question isn't doing anything odd),
