Ouch....terrible. Terrible because I can't believe I didn't think of that joke!!!!
Can I add though that if it had windows crashes would increase by 300%?
It'll have "movable panes" Doug @thesoundtestroom. ;-)
@Greg - I was alluding to IAA throttling throughput ;-)
Sorry, wrong thread...
Of course, the other thing about the iCar is that it will not look lifelike - no skeuomorphism if JI is still in charge of design ;-)
Ha! @mrufino1. There will of course be a view out of the panes though - controllable by a model driver ;-)
It would have a kick-ass stereo system. Apple's got a jump on everyone when it comes to audio (kind of why we all stop in here).
No doubt Apple will stick with the current fuel IAPs.
Yeah until you get upto about 50% speed and then the sound will start cutting out as the scenery scrolls by faster
I'd get any of them if:
A. It stops all oil related wars
B. I can afford it
Saying that, if I was strong willed enough to opt out of this shitty 'buy buy buy' gadget society I'd do that first of all. It really bugs me that my main instrument (iPad) can't just be used for ever but sooner or later the battery will pack up or worse, another iPad with shiny bells and whistles will sway me towards it.
Sorry to be spoiling the party but the world will need to rebalance itself sooner or later. China polluting its population in order to satisfy our first world needs doesn't feel good at all. Maybe I've been watching too much Russells Trews, I don't know but things like discussions about what electric car am I gonna get hits the raw nerve.
[rant over]
Good rant, and I agree with all of that. I love new innovation and toys but the obsolescence software and hardware makers build into their products is criminal. There should (and could) be more done to provide backwards-compatibility and better options for running 'lite' versions on older hardware. And replaceable batteries would be nice too - igadget's aren't particularly eco-friendly, despite Apple's claims to the contrary.
Apple are getting a bit crap, I think the money's going to their heads and they're craving more of it and feeding their hunger by slashing support (contacted them over something last week and the responses were shocking, worse than anything I've experienced with even the worst PC box builder) and neglecting their existing products.
Which is a bit of a bummer for me as I'm about to make my business fully Mac based and replace existing (dying) desktop Windows PC's with new retina iMacs.
A lot of the problem with western civ is the difference between need and want. Marketing’s purpose is to discover and respond to perceived requirements, and satisfy it. If it does that, it works, and that’s marketing’s well-paid job done. The problem is, people might need something and want something else. Or want something and not need anything. Anyone familiar with Edward Bernays and his renaming of propaganda into public relations will know what I’m saying.
If we the people feel the ‘need’ to upgrade our phones in a frenetic annual cycle of avoiding social embarrassment, then that’s what we get.
As an example, in the attic I have a Rolleicord II tlr camera. It dates from about 1937 or so. It’s preWWII anyway. The Rolleicord II was manufactured from 1936 to 1950, with a cessation of production due to the war, then resumption after. It was not until 1950 that the Rolleicord III came out, then a few years later, the IV, then the V from 1954 to 1976.
This would not happen today. Look at the ridiculous rate that we’ve ripped through smartphones, almost many of our past ones still work perfectly, but are in drawers, cupboards, etc because they lack features or memory in comparison with current models. And that’s only over the span of a few years.
If the public could accept a longer lived product that “gets it correct” in the first place, and doesn’t break for a long time and still works as well as this years model, then surely that’s the way to go.
My iPad 2, for example, and my wife’s iPad 2. They still do exactly what they were bought for, they still work perfectly, they just go and go and go. This is unusual. It probably explains why iPad sales are lower, but is that a “good” metric (where “good” is a duality balancing evil, not “good” as furthest away from bankrupt)?
The batteries in our gadgets can be replaced, but not easily though, as for obsolescence, it is in a way quite natural, as individuals, this at some point we must all face, but as a species I fear a fall, the likes of which has no precedent, but one lesson from this is 'we are all one' - that encompasses not just our own species, but the whole planet, maybe even beyond.
Not much point replacing the battery when the device can no longer run the latest OS, and therefore your apps stop working or you can't update them or buy new ones.
Obsolescence is going to catch up with everything at some point, but hardware and software developers could improve the current, ridiculously short lifespan of their products. Of course they won't, which is why Apple is one of the richest companies on the planet.
And it's not just Apple, I'm having to throw out our studio flatbed scanner this weekend. The hardware works perfectly, and it produces stunning scans, but we can't get drivers for any of the Windows OS versions we run as the manufacturer stopped updating them a few years back. Perfectly good piece of hardware consigned to the rubbish tip, as we're forced to buy a new one because none of our computers will recognise the device when it's connected. Throw it away Monzo, and buy another one.
In the meantime my MS20 still makes the same lovely racket as when I bought it nearly 40 years ago.
@monzo, yes, this is one of the big problems that needs to be addressed, but still only one of many problems that await us.
Large subject.
Small example of the mindset however was seeing someone (@dwarman http://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/114771/#Comment_114771) suggesting in the week that they use their iPad One for Midi seq. work. I dug out the unused-for-a-long-time object loaded Step Poly Art and then installed my midi-synth of choice, Thor, fully expecting it not to work. Up popped a message: Your machine is too old for the very latest version of Thor, but if you'd like we could install the last version which works on your iPad.
Yes please.
Works fine.
Point of the story: I was thrilled and amazed at this and then disappointed in myself that I should be/was so thrilled and amazed....
Obsolescence... That's a good point @monzo!!! We'd all have to update our cars every 11 months!!! :-(
@JohnnyGoodyear, NLog works well too, on my old ONE, still life in the old dog and my 1st gen too!
My VW van's 38 years old - don't think my iPad 2 will make it that long
“Apple then expects to debut iOS 9 at its June Worldwide Developer Conference, with a public beta release during the summer, and final release in the fall,”
Please let it not be two packs of effects and other New Shiny Things. Please let it be dull. Fixes, an oil change, food for the dog.
This is an excellent documentary that goes far in explaining why corporations treat us as they do.(it was all studied and well planned that we should become a throw away society)!
/The corps. hired shrinks to figure out how to best manipulate the consumer!

The Century of the Self is a 2002 British television documentary series by Adam Curtis. It focuses on how the work of Sigmund Freud, Anna Freud, and Edward Bernays influenced the way corporations and governments have analyzed, dealt with, and controlled people.

And when you’ve watched all four of those, here’s another more recent Adam Curtis mishmash of the most irrelevant wallpaper of any video or film clips he can get hold of without paying much in rights clearances for, and begins with the influence of Ayn Rand on Apple on …

All of thezeitgeist movies are quite descriptive of Ther way our system works with planned absolescence etc. I've recently watched the 3rd one 'moving forward'. They lost me half way through but I found the first half really good.
I already watched the century of the self and it was very good, now I will have a new one that looks equally good! Thanks so much!
When I tapped the link, my iPad crashed; I'm sure it was just a coincidence. A black SUV then SLOWLY passed by the house, probably lost.
@supanorton Humor, even if black, is always welcome
Apple"s quality control is going down the drain man. Just yesterday, my wife's ipad drained the battery completely as my wife thought the surge protector was on, but it was actually off. So off we went and did our errands. When we came back, the iPad Air was drained completely, and now, it wont even boot. One stinky month after the warranty expired. Oh man, I am really bummed at apple for such low qc standards. One year battery? give me a break. Called apple store today, had to make an appointment, Can you believe that? appointment? what is this, Doctors? Give me a break man. Now, I know im going to have to fork out $110 bucks for a new battery but i have to wait till Thursday for my appointment. Give me a break. Anyone heard of this battery issue guys? I googled it, but havent found any info, just ideas on how to maximize battery life. Anyways, hope those apple store guys dont make me buy a new one, cause I am done with appple if they do.
@Musikman4Christ Plug it into the charger, if the battery is 0% it won't do anything at all for 10-20 minutes until it has enough charge to boot. Then it will probably be at around 4% and will continue charging. Don't worry , it's not broken, this has happened to me on my iPod, iPhone, and recently my air when my case wasn't fastened correctly in my bag so the screen stayed on.
Nah, it will have Apple OSTS's (Optical See Thru Shields)
