First track using BA-1 (you can better hear it at the very beginning and at the end of the track but it is used all along the song)

A very nice synth. I like it a lot

I thought Ryo Togawa’s VAMono is more SH101-isch or am I completely wrong here? Btw, Ryo’s synths have seriously gone up in price. Totally worth it btw.

I’m glad I got everything from that developer when they were all on sale. Seriously underrated developer

Yes he is. Last thing I bought from him was VADrum2, so good. VAmono still on my list, waiting for that sale again :)

Same here. Very underrated and overlooked it seems. I don’t have his channel strip or the original drum app but have everything else.

Damn, looks good. A few months ago I was about to buy MiRack, but other stuff asked for investment. Most definitely on my shortlist.

Most people are sleepong on miRack cause in their mind it’s jsut about complex messy patches which are generatimg weird bleeps and bloops :-))

But it works ad AU instrument / effects, it’s pretty efficient, and you can think about it just as library of such complete modules where you just connect input and output (like on my screenshost) and that’s it, you use it as complete simple plugin ..

That is actually how i use miRack in most cases.

I’m in bed sick at the moment and thinking about watching Electronisounds tutorial for it because I’d really love to learn more about it beyond the very basics and playing presets.

Preset import now works! (no folder support)

  • As good as it is that a preset import and export system have been added to BA-1, it still needs the ability to make user subfolders and the ability to delete presets. The latter in particular is essential, and another indication that the devs do not fully understand the limits of ios sandboxing

I miss some sort of settings menu where I can set for example the pitch band range.

  • Is it cpu friendly on a standard iPad 9?

    Really?
So the's no other way to delete user-presets than to delete and re-install the app?!
Oh well, I'm in no rush to get this on but for higher tier apps I'd expect basic things like this to work on release...
...It reminds me of the earlier issues for a certain sampler app where there was no way to delete user-recorded samples.
(That has since long been fixed with Files.app integration etc. but still...).

It's almost time to compile a list of 'iOS/iPadOS usability things to consider...' and have it on stand-by for devs when things don't work as expected...

  • I have been thinking exactly Samu of crowdsourcing such a list for a while now.

I mean, no ability to delete presets is just beyond a joke. It really shows the problem with desktop ports where the devs do not properly consider changes that will be needed for their apps to function well on iOS. Far too many apps in that category. Hell, even many from ios native devs lol. Luckily I have become a real ball breaker when it comes to such things and call devs out in videos now when I see things missing that should be there, though I do also overlook things from time to time. Anyway, I have notified BA of these things. Batch import and export were the first things I mentioned once I got on the beta, which was quite late, unfortunately. There were a few new beta versions before release and none of them added batch import and export. No guarantee that those will get added, but fingers crossed. Anyway, the more people that complain about it by contacting baby audio, the more chance it will be added.

This is something I really appreciate about your videos!

While others may argue that this kind of 'spanking' is not needed I'm in the opposite corner...
...if the things that do not work are kept from getting any attention they will likely never get fixed and we'll be stuck with partially malfunctioning software for who knows how long, maybe even forever...

I've not yet laid my fingers or hands on any software that is 100% perfect, without any flaws or potential room for improvement. Some are close and I feel mostly 'at peace' but that doesn't mean they are 'perfect', far from it...

  • Thanks Samu,

I think it's important, and improvements are more likely to happen when failings are called out publically. I'd like to see other youtubers get a bit more critical in their reviews, most focus only on the positives. Being nice is not always doing someone a favour. Sometimes a bit of tough love is needed!

    Agreed...
...and It's one of the reasons I've stopped following a whole bunch of influencers because it's so painfully obvious that if they even squeak a bit of negative comments the views go down and the sponsors drop and no more gear or apps to review...

They do everything to please the Social Media Algo Gods with 100% positivity towards everything, including total garbage.

I tend to deliver more 'spanking' towards the apps I enjoy using, again a bit of tough love is needed :sunglasses:

  • @Gavinski, @Samu, you know that something is wrong when simply stating “there is no option to save / load / import presets” on some Youtube channels makes you a bad person. Crazy world, I’m telling you. 🤔

I'm on the 2020 iPad Air and spun up four instances of it in NS2 with no issues and loads of CPU to spare (and included numerous instances of Black Hole).

    Thanks, appreciate the intell.

  • So I finally got 'lucky' and won a copy of BA-01! (Thanks @MobileMusicPro )

The 'random' function is actually pretty nice at it made me think about a potential new 'freebie' from @BabyAudio ...
...a 'Magic Synth CS' which would be a monophonic version of BA-01 engine with only a big random button in the middle and volume slider at the bottom?

I've already had a few crashes with BA-01 in Logic Pro for iPad (ie. the plug-in fails to load when adding additional instances) but a relaunch of the host solves it. I've had this happen in AUM to too some things may still be be a bit 'shaky'?

As for the UI in general, it's on the smaller side on the 11" iPadPro (Font sizes, slider widths etc.) but I'll just use the random button for now and save the presets that tick, but there's the other one, can't delete user-presets without deleting the app...

    Cheers!

I was just looking at the GUI of Fabfilter Twin 3, talking about a visual nightmare..

my personal absolute top UI disaster by far is SynthMaster2 .. only one complex synth in last maybe 15-20 years i am really not able to use for any meaningful sound design.

    Just’s can’t, it’s mess.

I even can’t tell what should be improved - it’s whole completely wrong, like the whole UI should be deleted some experienced UI/UX designer should create completely new one..

Yes, this is by far the worst. So much effort put into the synth, but they failed to make it functionally appealing to use (unless you’re just presetting…even then…that preset browser…), and some total slacking on fixing major bugs in favor of pushing out another new, more cluttered version with new bugs if its own.

It’s an almost objectively dumb decision to use this to design sounds. They shouldve stuck with the Synthmaster Player niche.

And BA-1 is fun and simple to use. I ended my first hour long dabble with it with like 15-20 different, usable, really good (imo) presets. It’s so quick!

Simplicity is so important for programming, this synth reminds me of the TAL Juno clone (and the Juno itself) in that regard

  • My only gripe is the tiny tiny sliders, i hope there was a zoomed version.

Maybe i can use the ios zoom lol

  • I'm using the zoomed version.
Jokes aside, the YAMAHA CS01 has been in my house since my childhood and has been a great toy for me.
Of course, the BA-1 has expanded parameters and poly counts, so it's not the same, but for me, even a small slider can be used freely.

BabyAudio has done a great job.

Beautiful photo ! What a amazih time to live to have multiple such great synths literally in pocket .. 👍👍👍

  • @RXQ02165
This is a very strange photo. I have an unnamable feeling. I thought it was nostalgia, but on reflection it is not the same thing. There is an eerie reality to the photo, as if it were an endless series of small screens within a screen, but it’s more eerie. Suddenly I realized the theme of the photo is a doppelganger. So I was cursed by the photo just now and will be a bot from now on. (It happens often.)

  • I read the following news on Synth Anatomy website. It reminded me of this thread on ABF, so I put the news link below.

Tweak Pack, 50 free patches for the Baby Audio BA-1 Synthesizer plugin
    https://synthanatomy.com/2023/07/tweak-pack-50-free-patches-for-the-baby-audio-ba-1-synthesizer-plugin.html

If you download it, I think you might want to use the reply function at the bottom of Synth Anatomy page to thank the patch creator = Synth Anatomy administrator(?).

(BTW, I don't have BA-1 app/plugin, so the above news is not relevant to me at this time. I mention it only because I was cursed by the photo of BA-1 app that @RXQ02165 posted in this thread. So if the above reprint(?) of Synth Anatomy news is helpful to you, I think you might want to thank @RXQ02165, not me.)
