Maybe it's because of its simplicity but the BA-1 is my fav synth on iOS already. Very usable, easy to work with.
Only downside is it made me want an analogue synth, it's the first time I've actually thought "yeah this is cool, would like to have a hardware version".
Not necessarily a CS-01 or whatever it's emulating, just any analogue hardware synth. Nice to feel that inspiration.
I'm a fan of how noob-friendly the BA-1 is. Anybody can use it, and start to make their own sounds without being overwhelmed by a bunch of shit they don't really want to understand.
BA-1 is fantastic! I loved it when it came out and then didn’t use it a whole lot for a few weeks. Been diving back in lately and it’s becoming one of my favorites as well. It may take the spot for the most “analog” iOS synth.
I’ve never owned a CS-1 but I’ve played one a few times and they’re great! The Reface CS is also freaking amazing.
I’m all iOS only besides small hardware because I don’t have space. So I’m glad there’s some a convincing analog replica.
Reface CS seems cool too. I would love something hardware, analogue ie no presets or whatever so I'm physically changing the sound and you can't really get the sound back exactly as it was. Something like that I think I'd find really inspiring to write and record with.
The BA-1 is awesome though.
I'd love to go all iOS - but I've got so many things I use on PC. All of which could be replaced, but a lot of it means purchasing the same things again.. I have plans to move to a MacBook rather than iPad in the future, though. I do want to shift off of PC.
Not sure if I'll still be able to use what I bought on iPad, on a MacBook though, assuming I'm using the same Apple account.
I just feel a bit more confident in a MacBook or laptop or whatever for live stuff, I'm always a little paranoid the iPad is going to just exit an app or something on me. It's never happened and is probably a hangover of having issues with Android tablets in the past doing that. My iPad (Air 5) hasn't given me a single issue. It's probably more reliable than my PC would be. Still, the mental issue is there that the tech might fail or whatever live on stage.
I haven't quite got into recording full songs on the iPad yet - I've got so many DAWs, that's the real reason - haven't picked which one I prefer the most to stick with and learn. I have Logic Pro, Loopy Pro, Drambo, Cubasis 3 + all the packs, ZenBeats, Gadget 2 + some things unlocked in there, NanoStudio 2, FL Studio Mobile, AUM, GarageBand (obviously), n-Track Studio.. haven't tried Ableton Note yet..
I've been more focused on getting something I can rely on and use live for looping etc before getting into writing and recording and learning a DAW. I think the live aspect is more important as it's what pays the bills.
Not sure I want to go all-in on writing and recording on iPad. Definitely want all-in on the Apple ecosystem though, for some reason I just prefer using it over PC.
This is a fun synth, it’s hard to make a bad sounding patch. They have so much character.
Also I thought you could never turn off the lfo but is just that I had the mod wheel a little up.
I’ve been all iOS for a while as it just clicked with me the most but whatever workflow is best for you is all that matters! For iOS DAWs Zenbeats and Logic are my go-tos. Gadget is great but since it’s a close ecosystem it’s not quite a DAW imo.
I will mention, the CS is virtual analogue, not real analog but it’s amazing nonetheless.
Has anyone tried the new expansion packs for this synth? It just came out. Is it worth the price? Intro price $29
https://babyaud.io/ba1-expansion-packs
No, you can do them yourself the synth is so easy. In my opinion. I do love my city pop though
Whoopsie
Yes, this must be one of the easiest synths to program that exists. And it comes with so many presets anyway. I definitely wouldn't waste money buying a 30 bucks preset pack (on intro!) for it. But if you have money to spend and are purely a preset person, by all means go for it.
WOAH! $30 for a preset pack is kinda crazy lol. I prefer to make my own but definitely wouldn’t pay that much even if I needed some. I don’t mind spending a few bucks to help out some forum members that make patches though. We have some super creative people here.
I'm sure this is expensive because a) they probably used a bunch of famous or semi famous people b) they'll spend a big chunk on marketing. One for the people with more money than sense, likely!
That usually seems to be the case. Every time I see someone pay outrageous money for a preset pack they end up looking exactly like the kind of person that would spend outrageous money on a preset pack 😂
Um. Does this seem like a rather expensive synth, for iOS I mean? Or is that just me…
Personally, I find Dagger more reasonably priced. It's available on iOS, iPadOS and macOS with one purchase and it is somewhat similar insofar that is has a limited and very focused feature set, like BA-1.
This is $50 bucks on desktop, which is probably considered fairly reasonable. But desktop plugins can be resold etc etc, it's a more pro platform, a large number of users use cracks etc and so on. $30 on iOS for a very simple synth like this is overpriced, by the standards of the market, in my view, yes. And not just in my view. Objectively, if you look at the price drops when a desktop app gets ported to iOS, they are often very big drops indeed, not just a mere 40% drop. Objectively, that is not competitive.
For $30 you could certainly spend your money better on other synths available on iOS, whether digital, analogue or whatever, no question. I suspect there will be regular 30 or even 50% sales.
BA-1 sounds great, it's intuitive, it's got a lot of presets, but there are for sure much better bangs for your buck around if you enjoy more sophisticated synths. Isn't even Fabfilter Twin 3, with all its insane modulation possibilities etc cheaper than this? Just checked, yes, it's 25 bucks. And it's 129 on desktop. AND Fabfilter have immensely more pedigree than Baby Audio. Or get something like Tera Pro, designed for iOS and won't strain your eyes or make you want to use a pencil. Or something like id700, based on a truly rare synth of which only a handful of hardware models remain, hardly any in working order. Or if you really want to go down the rabbit hole, join those hardy souls who now do nearly everything they need just in Drambo, mirack and Audulus and only buy a few truly special other releases per year.
Not to knock Baby Audio, I like some of their stuff and I like BA-1, but would I personally spend 30 bucks on this... No. Not unless u really have a thing for that cs-01 sound. The intro price, 20 I think?, should have been the regular price, and intro could have been 10 or 15. That would be more realistic in my view.
I see a lot of fetish in this forum that we should gobble up any crumbs from the desktop table because they somehow must be better than native ios apps, and of course we expect that they be more expensive than native ios apps. Actually, often they are not better, some are downright amateur efforts (not saying that about Baby Audio, I'm thinking of some other releases but won't name names). And if they're just JUCE ports of already developed apps, they should arguably be even cheaper than native ios devs apps, as they don't involve anywhere near the work needed in building an auv3 from scratch. Plus, the UI of these desktop ports is often an unsatisfactory experience compared to native ios apps. They rarely scale well etc.
Rant over! I think sometimes these things have to be said though!
@Gavinski Well said and spot on, I am completely with you!
Cheers! Yeah, I'm kind of at a point where enough is enough, lol. There are so many app releases and it's just getting to a point where it's pretty much crazy / stupid to buy them all indiscriminately. There are many here, and I'd include myself among them, who genuinely are suffering from app addiction.
Anyway, I speak my mind on such things, and my YouTube reviews grow more critical by the day, in terms of pointing out pros and cons of apps I cover. Some appreciate it, some don't, but I feel it's important to be said. Again, always just my own opinions, backed up with facts where necessary and available, everyone is free to have differing views and to express them.
I used to be one of the many app-a-holics but I've recovered fairly well from it...
...but as with everything there are good and bad sides. The bad side for me was I spent way, way too much on apps and the good side is that I learned a LOT in the process to really get to know what I 'need' and to filter out the stuff I don't need.
Gone are the days of support/insta-buys which in the long run is just 'artificial life-support'.
A good product sells it self and I don't have to feel guilty for not supporting every single developer by buying 'everything' they release...
Absolutely Samu.
Also people need to kill the need for novelty. It's especially ironic in cases where the new exciting app is actually just an emulation, perhaps with a few minor tweaks, of a common as muck decades old hardware synth 😂. So many dirt cheap apps on the appstore that people can buy when they really need to scratch the itch, many of them much better than new releases.
Here's my approach: In the early years, when there were relatively few apps that stood out, I was less critical and generally tame and considerate of the apps' capabilities and sometimes shortcomings. And I was relatively happy with what you could achieve with it on iOS, which was already impressive in places. Especially considering the extremely low prices.
With the amount of releases now achieved, the associated redundancy of concepts and features and the increased prices of some providers, which are increasingly scratching my personal pain threshold, my demands are also increasing and I am simply becoming more selective and also much more critical. This is actually a completely normal customer reaction against the backdrop of a changing market. This has led to a drastic reduction in my app addiction, which I admit was never particularly pronounced but did exist at one time.
Therefore, I welcome your critical statements, also and especially in your videos, as a welcome and urgently needed bastion against overly euphoric and arbitrarily exultant statements. Thank you for that, cheers!
Yep, spot on! With more competition and some vastly increased prices, as well as the backdrop of major economic and political crises and a very uncertain job market, never mind the existential threat of global heating - which is actually the only thing that really matters but is drowned out by all the other noise - and it's time to get very damn fussy about where you put your money.
Great comments above. Very well put indeed, and very good to see.
I'm glad you mentioned the climate issue as an absolute priority. I have a hard time with how flippantly many deal with it, not willing to budge from their standard of living in the slightest. But that's just a side note, doesn't really belong in this thread.
Bought BA-1 because of a few people here in which I trust, never regretting it. It is pricey if you don’t get it on sale.
But if I make only one keeper project with this instrument, money will be well spent. Few weeks ago I bought freaking two scoops of ice cream for 5€, ffs. 🥶
Knowledge always costs money and time, that library of apps and your hunger for experimentation and learning made you an expert that you are.
Is this a good enough excuse?! 😅
Well, the 'excuse' here is that I've become very picky about the apps which I eventually decide to get.
Some apps end up on the 'would be kinda interesting but not super essential' list...
I've 'won' a few apps that were in the list but in reality once the initial excitement wears of it's just meh I can do 90% of this with the other apps I already have
So true. At the end it all depends on what you want to do, do you want to be an audio app collector? Go ahead if that’s what makes you happy.
Wanna make more/better/finished music, not amount of new gear will help xD
Yeah, I pared down my app library stuff from like 250 gb to 40 gb total (not including audio/video files, sample library, books/comics etc). Feels good man. The 40 gb is still pretty overkill even.
There was a time and place for it, and I wouldn’t be into synths without that phase (so it doesn’t hurt as much to know you have a couple thousand wasted dollars sitting in the trash), but that time is over. The novelty of the deal (steal, comparatively) does indeed wear off over time, thankfully.
BA-1 did make the cut for me, though!
What are your current top 5-10 favorite synths? Maybe even less than 5?
Currently, Twin 3, Dagger, and BA-1.
The other remainings are Tal Uno, OBXd, the 3 Moogs, Zeeon, mood, Spectrum, Phosphor 3, Pipa, Quanta, ID700, Virtual ANS 3, Odyssei, Nambu, Vogel CMI (nostalgia purposes), then the 5-6 brambos synths. Estimated $400-ish total spent so still comes in cheaper than an entry level hardware synth. Pretty unbelievable.
That’s still more than enough, and heavily dominated by virtual analog stuff. But that’s my tastes, and Nambu is the only non-hardware FM synth I’ve liked, unfortunately.
