Has anyone tried the new expansion packs for this synth? It just came out. Is it worth the price? Intro price $29

No, you can do them yourself the synth is so easy. In my opinion. I do love my city pop though

Yes, this must be one of the easiest synths to program that exists. And it comes with so many presets anyway. I definitely wouldn't waste money buying a 30 bucks preset pack (on intro!) for it. But if you have money to spend and are purely a preset person, by all means go for it.

WOAH! $30 for a preset pack is kinda crazy lol. I prefer to make my own but definitely wouldn’t pay that much even if I needed some. I don’t mind spending a few bucks to help out some forum members that make patches though. We have some super creative people here.

I'm sure this is expensive because a) they probably used a bunch of famous or semi famous people b) they'll spend a big chunk on marketing. One for the people with more money than sense, likely!

That usually seems to be the case. Every time I see someone pay outrageous money for a preset pack they end up looking exactly like the kind of person that would spend outrageous money on a preset pack 😂

Hey! That’s judgmental…and I love it! I still maintain you can judge a book by its cover at least 90% of the time (honestly think it’s probably like 97%, but wanted to leave a little extra margin for error)

Yeah, I pared down my app library stuff from like 250 gb to 40 gb total (not including audio/video files, sample library, books/comics etc). Feels good man. The 40 gb is still pretty overkill even.

There was a time and place for it, and I wouldn’t be into synths without that phase (so it doesn’t hurt as much to know you have a couple thousand wasted dollars sitting in the trash), but that time is over. The novelty of the deal (steal, comparatively) does indeed wear off over time, thankfully.

BA-1 did make the cut for me, though!

What are your current top 5-10 favorite synths? Maybe even less than 5?

Currently, Twin 3, Dagger, and BA-1.

The other remainings are Tal Uno, OBXd, the 3 Moogs, Zeeon, mood, Spectrum, Phosphor 3, Pipa, Quanta, ID700, Virtual ANS 3, Odyssei, Nambu, Vogel CMI (nostalgia purposes), then the 5-6 brambos synths. Estimated $400-ish total spent so still comes in cheaper than an entry level hardware synth. Pretty unbelievable.

That’s still more than enough, and heavily dominated by virtual analog stuff. But that’s my tastes, and Nambu is the only non-hardware FM synth I’ve liked, unfortunately.

I'd list nearly every synth Cherry Audio makes since I have them on desktop and many times they're my first choice, but now that I use Logic Pro choices have expanded somewhat to include those in LP.

As far as the iPadOS/macOS synths go, OB-Xd, Pure Synth Platinum, AddStation, Mela 3, AudioLayer, Dagger, Model D, Model 15, AAS' Strum GS-2 and IK's MODO Drum and MODO Bass round out my favorites. I will say I like Nambu for its many presets, but still find its operations too alien to my workflow to make it one of my go-to's.

@Gavinski Well said and spot on, I am completely with you!

Cheers! Yeah, I'm kind of at a point where enough is enough, lol. There are so many app releases and it's just getting to a point where it's pretty much crazy / stupid to buy them all indiscriminately. There are many here, and I'd include myself among them, who genuinely are suffering from app addiction.

Anyway, I speak my mind on such things, and my YouTube reviews grow more critical by the day, in terms of pointing out pros and cons of apps I cover. Some appreciate it, some don't, but I feel it's important to be said. Again, always just my own opinions, backed up with facts where necessary and available, everyone is free to have differing views and to express them.

I agree overall but I do think it’s important to note the distinction between app addiction and just loving to buy new apps and discover what they can do. Much like someone collecting synths vs hoarding them. I was definitely heading down that road a while back and I had to stop myself once I began buying old outdated apps just for the hell of it. I still buy basically any app that interests me (within reason) because I genuinely love the experience of getting a new app, learning it through and through, and putting it to use. The key distinction there is an app that integrates me. I think it gets bad once you start buying apps whether they are useful to you or not.

Definitely good for us to speak our minds about things now more than ever. With Logic on the iPad, there are likely gonna be a lot of dekstop devs eyeballing iPad OS more than ever. So it’s important to let them know the standard expected with AUV3s on iOS. Otherwise they may just see it as something they can dump some apps on and the forget about it. Or put little effort in and expect there to be no issues.

    True on both points!

  • I do want this, but man $30 is a lot for an app IMHO, and that tiny font is almost a deal breaker. This is one I'm going to wait for a sale for, as VA subtractive is actually not my favorite kind of synthesis style (I might be the only one who feels that way LOL) as I find it easier (for me) to program good patches in FM and additive

I'm on a bit of a limited budget so I have to choose what I get wisely. There are apps I would pay that amount of money for if they cost that much, like Nambu (IMHO ALL of the Iceworks apps are way underpriced). I'm still going to get it, but if I do it at full price there's others I'm getting first because they'll fit my needs more

Perhaps I should have said "app of this nature"!

Yeah. Whenever someone complains about an iPad app being too expensive, I feel compelled to put it out there that I’m willing to pay sustainable prices for iPad software to try to combat the idea that iPad software is a race to the bottom. It seems futile so I usually don’t, but sometimes—like now—I do.

I mean, there are plenty of apps where the value for me isn’t worth the price, but I’m not going to complain about it and hurt the chances of such apps being available for people who want them.

I'm only speaking for myself, but when I say it's a lot, I'm saying it's a lot for me right now (which isn't the same as saying it's overpriced) , because I can get Phase Monkey AND either Lowtone or Addstation along with one or more of the Apesoft apps, maybe Mononoke together for the same amount of money. I plan to get ALL of those (including BA-1) at some point soon regardless...it's just I gotta see what's going to give me the most mileage right now. I rarely use one synth for a song, and my band makes albums as opposed to singles...and as the synth guy, I make it a HUGE point of pride to see how many synth apps I can stack into a single song, and if I reuse an app for another track, it's never on the same instrument twice on the album. I'm not knocking this synth's quality at all, it's just my own personal workflow. If any of the Iceworks synths were that much, I'd pay for them in a heartbeat because I seriously use them that much. Same with Mood and BLEASS Omega as well. I know BA-1 sounds great, and I want it BADLY, make no mistake about it. I just don't see me getting as much utility out of it as I do with other apps.

That said the tiny font is almost a deal breaker (almost ) because I'm going to be using it as an AU inside GarageBand which is going to be making it even smaller. I rarely use presets, preferring to design my own, and I already know it's gonna give me some trouble.

  • @Fear2Stop FWIW, I think BA-1 is maybe the best sounding VA on iOS and comes very close to nailing that analog sound. It’s a thing of beauty honestly. Every patch I make just sounds good and hits that sweet spot.

I agree with you though, VA is not my favorite form of synthesis either. I prefer FM, Wavetable, and Granular over it.

The videos made me want it BAD, and that battery feature is lowkey one of the reasons. I do love the sound of the app... I just feel limited with subtractive. For some reason it's harder for me, with the exception of Mood, Lorentz, and VCS3. Yeah, it's MUCH easier for me to make patches with the iVCS3 than DRC...I might be the only human being in the world that's true for. Does Ripplemaker count? If so, add that to the good list LMFAO

I haven't gotten into Wavetable yet...I have Animoog Z but I never got the chance to really dig deep. I want Agonizer pretty damn badly. FM though is by far my favorite (KQ Dixie and my beloved Omega), esp when mixed with Additive (looking at YOU, Synclavier)

Man Synclavier is amazing too. I don’t use it as much as I should and every time I do I think “why don’t I use this more” lol.

If you’re worried about limitations, BA-1 has them lol. It’s far from the most feature rich synth, so you’re basically buying for the sound. And the battery effect which yeah, I agree, is really cool lol.

Buttersynth is a great Wavetable synth if you don’t have it. It also mixes in VA and FM as well so kinda ticks many boxes at once.

I like Agonizer a lot, and I use it fairly often but it does one thing that a lot of Kai apps do that I hate: it doesn’t resize correctly. You have to have the window fully open to see everything and when you resize it starts cutting stuff off.

  • I wouldn’t spend 30 bucks on BA-1 knowing Black Friday is on the horizon. Just a thought.. :)

Not sure if Baby Audio do big sales but good point. Probably best to not buy anything really expensive with the holidays coming unless you actually need it or it’s on intro pricing.

  • edited October 2023

I would counter with nothing on iPad is prohibitively expensive. Everything is already marked down ridiculously to start with…everything is on sale by default. And add that if you’re not willing to pay a full but already deeply discounted price, then you probably don’t need that item.

This argument is stale and fruitless at this point so this will be my last mention of it. I had to go out with one nagging reminder thoug because it’s beyond me the amount of vultures circling around tchotchkes. And don’t give me the “I’m poor” line of reasoning. I don’t have very much to work with either.

Yeah Buttersynth is one that's on my shortlist too, just concerned about all the reports of crashing I read here.

I love Synclavier because it doesn't sound like anything else on IOS...I've made some patches that bring back memories of 1980s arcade games like Gauntlet, Paperboy, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. That certain sound you'd mainly here in Atari/Midway arcade games that uses the Yamaha YM2151 chip, also known as OPM

Yeah I can wait another month or so, because I'm gonna be getting Phase Monkey and SNEsynth for sure soon anyway, and now thinking about what I said about games OPL looks like it might be next lol

Man Gauntlet. Played that a lot growing up and I can definitely hear those same similarities. I hope Synclavier doesn’t get abandoned because it’s certainly unique on iOS. Now just need the Fairlight app to get some love and attention lol

Synclavier I had no qualms about spending the full price on it because that (along with the Prophet 5) was a bucketlist dream synth I'd never be able to afford IRL so I had to get the app. Jay wanted me to use it on her album because she plays a lot of the old Atari Games arcade stuff on her Raspberry Pi and wanted me to make patches that sounded like that particular chip

Hmm...I guess I AM getting OPL next after all then lol

Yeah Buttersynth is one that's on my shortlist too, just concerned about all the reports of crashing I read here.

I love Synclavier because it doesn't sound like anything else on IOS...I've made some patches that bring back memories of 1980s arcade games like Gauntlet, Paperboy, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. That certain sound you'd mainly here in Atari/Midway arcade games that uses the Yamaha YM2151 chip, also known as OPM

I wouldn’t spend 30 bucks on BA-1 knowing Black Friday is on the horizon. Just a thought..

For sure. I could never afford the vintage or the new one honestly. They seem amazing though and I’d love to at least play a real one some day but not sure how I’d get my hands on one lol but from what I’ve heard from people who HAVE played the real thing, the app gets pretty damn close so I’m glad to have that.

I’ve heard OPL gets quite close too. Another great one in a similar vein is Phosphor 3. Not to add more to your list lol

@Fear2Stop FWIW, I think BA-1 is maybe the best sounding VA on iOS and comes very close to nailing that analog sound.

Yeah, that one is iPad only though, so no dice for me

As for the BA-1, knowing how close this is to the Yamaha CS-01 is a big one for me; anything based on actual hardware is a must buy. I will be getting it eventually

Hopefully I'll have a good Bandcamp Friday this coming weekend!

Yeah that does concern me....thankfully I do have a fair amount of complimentary apps and was planning on doing a synthwave project soon so it'll slot in there just fine.

It sounds really good but it is very limited in its range of sounds

Yeah that does concern me....thankfully I do have a fair amount of complimentary apps and was planning on doing a synthwave project soon so it'll slot in there just fine.

But I'm leaning towards an 80s videogame inspired album first !

    It's perfect for synthwave.

@Fear2Stop FWIW, I think BA-1 is maybe the best sounding VA on iOS and comes very close to nailing that analog sound.

Oh apologies, didn’t realize you were iPhone only! In that case, nevermind haha

I’m finishing up my album right now. I may end up aiming for Friday as release day. Forgot all about Bandcamp Friday!
