good question, and some good replies so far.
Well this is indeed a good question. Just for this, the whole universe gives you a sincere hug.
Unfortunately I am not in the position to give an answer. One thing I’ve gathered is that we are not educated to think properly. Which is not anyone’s fault, neither from the schooling system nor from ourselves. One can put the blame on the schooling system, but that doesn’t lead anywhere.

To think in a logical way, to judge in a proper fashion, is not as easy as it seems. There are volumes of books about this topic.
I try to condense these volumes of knowledge, although I know I will fail to do so.
How did he define "being awake" from his perspective?
Hahaha! 😂
I feel like it means in terms of facing reality vs living in denial. Many people seem to live happily in denial if it means they don’t have to face certain truths or the possibility of holding themselves accountable
just one more thing about judgements.
There are three ways of judgement:
Not to confused with with each other, and used with knowledge. So many times we judge something emotionally, but don’t have time to reflect this topic in other ways. Be it in the mental or will realm.
The wise leaves its time. And after this time, does not judge. She or he has the understanding. And acts or doesn’t act.

The important thing is the thought process.
This is why this question of yours is so relevant. Thank you.
For me meditation is more not thinking about thinking. When I meditate I let the thoughts fade into the background and then progressively sink back into the bliss, equanimity, and tranquility.

“ Gurdjieff's basic assertion was that human life as ordinarily lived is similar to sleep; transcendence of the sleeping state required work, but, when it was achieved, an individual could reach remarkable levels of vitality and awareness.”
HH, bro!
Indeed. It makes my work life very difficult because most decisions that get made seem arbitrary and instinctive and unreflective to me. I have to bite my tongue constantly.
Humans are but propagation tools for viral memes. The least we can do is become aware of that.
Gurdjieff had another approach, which I find rather interesting. But in this hedonistic time, not advisable.
Interesting timing. I focus on my own thoughts constantly. Most often it's not good. But I recently stumbled across a Meyers Briggs Type Indicator test (not the official one, but a couple of unofficial other tests), and I have to say it quickly nailed how I process the world and where it goes wrong (and sometimes right).
It was very clear what type of personality type I am, and it has opened up very useful understanding of how I processes life. More importantly it has helped me understand how others process it in very different, but equally valid ways. It's been a huge helper for improving communication and respect for others.
So, yes, I've been thinking about thinking a lot lately. 😂
But this time in a good way.
Very good perception. This is why mystery schools have been created.
@Fingolfinzz
this is a good method, I use it almost every day.
o yes.
I was listening to NPR. A civil engineer was talking about the error of future urban planning. The plan was to make more and wider roads to accommodate the forecasted increase in automobiles. She said a better idea was to imagine a world where one person per vehicle was not the norm. Instead, plan for transportation systems that accommodate many people. I think that’s suggesting paradigm change…. Usually stuff, except for a few futurists, most of us can’t see coming.
I just think of wanking
AI is going to radically revise my entire industry. A few of us individual workers are tooling up for it, but the industry’s larger managerial infrastructure is in total denial. There is no planning at all for the revolution.
St. Louis is a great example of this. We have buses and a train system but not implemented well enough. The suburb areas were planned with cars in mind so it’s just completely unwalkable and buses only run every 45 minutes to an hour on the most major of roads. So many people here have cars and the traffic is unreal for the size of our metro population. It’s incredibly hostile towards pedestrians and the drivers tend to act really entitled as well. Even travel in the south and north parts of the city are pretty limited because the train only runs east and west basically and then goes to the airport
I have ADHD/OCD/Anxiety so I think about thinking and think about thinking other things and worry about those and then think of this and that too and the other thing as well.
If we could all live in the jhanas 24 hours a day….
I understand this desire to escape duality, but, for me, I want to live in this world. Eternity lies ahead. Plenty of time for no thought. However, I do want to reduce my own pain and anxiety while I’m here and live this life for the pleasure it offers. I also want to understand, as much as I can, how it all works. That’s pleasure, too. There’s very little meaning in pain… except, maybe, the pain of self sacrifice…. Something I’m not very good at.
I asked you what I asked you for a reason my friend.
Short answer: naturally.
I think I thought I saw a puddly tat!
— not tweety bird
“I think I thought I saw you cry.”
I feel this is very elementary so I don’t think about thinking any longer I just do it . It’s very refreshing when I talk with someone who is already past this stage of self awareness and is actually and actively engaged in their thoughts .I hope we all think well !!
Lately, I have been thinking about how memory works. How facts are retrieved and how dreams are experienced but rarely stored as a memory. If I think about the dream on waking up I do get more short term details I could recall but if I just start my day the story fades away.
I’ve noticed I tend to start memory retrieval with an alphabetic clue… like that actor in some older film’s name starts with the letter M. Then I start flipping through names starting with M to see if I can get a hit. Often the name just surfaces without thinking about it especially if there’s a visual component like a face.
I’m thinking that essential links between memories and the path to retrieve them get wiped away overtime due to a lack of use.
Anyway… this line of thought plays into the concept of muscle memory training required to learn an instrument or memorize song lyrics.
I thought I thought about thinking, but now that I think about it, it’s clear that what I thought I thought was just me thinking that I thought it, and not me actually thinking about thinking at all. Or so I thought…
That show was pretty funny. She knows exactly how to play that role and still get people to respond.
