I recorded a quick demo of FMR set up in Drambo. No crazy time bending just yet.. still trying to get my footing and getting myself acquainted with the multi-MIDI output/channels.

Quite nice - what synth is that?

  • We’re just use to apps being priced like snacks—you can buy one on impulse for a quick hit of dopamine. This one, OTOH, is priced for people who know they’ll get a lot of good use out of it. Fair enough by me.

    😂 🙃🤪

You pay 40 dollars WITH concessions to go and see a movie?!

I looked up the average price of going to the movies by yourself with concessions 🧐

You can use it now and not someday. You just can’t load it up as a VsT plugin. You’ll need to run it stand alone and then point the Seqeuncer to Midi and assign FMR as MIDI source in Ableton.

Then your music will sound wonderful and you will be tear free.

    Note on and off apparently

  • Oh, I don't know... it's definitely outside of my own average app budget. But, I'm not likely the target demographic who would best utilize this tool.

I think it's great offering the testflight demo. I hadn't really used the "Classic" Fugue Machine in so long that it was no longer even installed. I re-installed it to compare with the new version. It made me appreciate the Classic one again, but not enough to "level up" to the new one for $60.

I'm looking forward to a good demo video of this... mostly, because after a casual play, I'm curious how the extras in this, beyond the "Classic" app... have justified the significant jump in pricing. I mean, it's definitely evolved, but I haven't figured out enough from the testflight to fully understand the full extent. Definitely above my pay-grade though.

The user manual is still a "work in progress" but so far i'm finding it pretty helpful. It's a little sparse, but it's still teaching me things that aren't obvious when just playing around through the in-app interface. https://alexandernaut.com/fugue-machine-rubato/manual

The Economics of Me Stopping Yelling at Clouds about the Price

1 Grocery Store Visit - $30, but I get to socialise with the employees I know
1 Going Outside to Touch Grass - Priceless
1 Getting Right with God - Everything

Despite my initial misgivings, I decided to stop worrying about how much Rubato costs and just use what I already have to work on music. That one person above whose name I can't spell is correct - it's just GAS. I honestly just needed to go outside to touch grass today and get the heck out of my head. 😂 Waste of creative energy otherwise.

  • So here’s a tip for those trying to figure out what all these little bells and whistles do; go through the included presets, and look at those controls. Take notes of what you find interesting, in order to take those concepts into your own projects.

I know the built-in references and the manual itself are kind of vague on a lot of things at the moment. He does mention that the manual is currently a work in progress.

I’m determined to figure out most of this stuff. Might take a little time.

Another tip if you’re experimenting with the time bending; only try one control at a time! If you start turning all kinds of dials and adjusting multiple settings at once, there’s no telling what kind of results you’ll get, and you may never find your way back. I’ve had to start fresh several times!

Last tip for now; like the example video I posted above; you only need a handful or less of notes! There’s so much that can be done with even a single note on the grid.

Yeah, $60 might not be much to some people, but it's a lot to others, especially outside the US. Due to the app store's pricing, it's also 60 pounds sterling in the UK, which is quite a chunk more than 60 dollars. For people in Latin America etc, $60 is often a pretty serious amount of change. Easy to forget maybe, but it's good for folk to bear this kind of thing in mind when having these discussions

Didn’t see an undo button (yet? A lot going on here) but I think that is one of the points of the snapshots, circled in green here

I think this is a no brainer to purchase.

For me, $60 depends on what I spend it on. I do need groceries and to pay bills. Not as glamourous as getting a new trinket to play with, but life's necessities must come first. I guess that's why the sticker shock got me. I want this app, but honestly? I bet I could program similar notes myself in a piano roll. It's simply not as convenient as just using Rubato. But ymmv.

And you make several excellent points about pricing in other countries. Other people would have to, in essence, spend more US dollars in their own country's currency due to the appstore's pricing. But at the end of the day, it's just software that isn't necessarily a necessity to have. So like I said, mate, I'm just not going to worry about Fugue Machine Rubato and just move on. 😂 Not worth wasting my limited daily energy on.

80 USD introductory price? What.. No. Even $80 full price is absurd.

If you open Settings > MIDI output > MIDI out 1 (etc.) > FMRubato MIDI Out in the app, and pick a channel, this can then be selected in Live under the 'MIDI From' channel input.

It works a bit like an IAA on iOS, where it's open in a separate window, rather than hosted in a DAW.

Quite nice it includes this feature actually even though it's a bit clunky, most of my AU MIDI apps don't offer this option for Live.

I am very glad you figured out how to do this after I mentioned it was possible but didnt give you any clues about how to actually do it.

Hopefully you wont mind if I take the opportunity to explain the different parts that make this work, mostly just in case it helps you or anyone else ever get other apps working with MIDI and Ableton etc.....

Mac has built in virtual MIDI stuff, called 'IAC Driver'.

Apple allows app developers to make use of that system to automatically create virtual MIDI devices for their apps. FMRubato is likely using this to make the MIDI port that you can then see in Ableton (and other MIDI apps).

But even when apps dont use that feature to create & nicely name this virtual stuff automatically while the app is running, you as a user can also create these virtual MIDI cable devices in your macOS yourself and use them however you like. Here is an example of instructions for doing so: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/audio-midi-setup/ams1013/mac

This stuff will then work with any apps that have options for selecting what MIDI inputs and outputs the app should use. Any virtual MIDI stuff you have setup will show up in the same lists that will show your actual hardware MIDI devices. Its not Ableton-specific.

The scenario where this stuff wont help at all is if you have stuff that only exists as a plugin that can only transmit MIDI using plugin<->host API methods. If a plugin doesnt have any sort of ability and UI options to show a selection list of MIDI devices to output directly to, then you sadly cannot make use of this virtual MIDI IAC stuff to work around Abletons MIDI plugin limitation.

    I feel the same! lol

  • I think that if the dev is confident enough to make a testable version, it means that he is sure his app worth the price. I would play with it and if in several days I am able to create something good with it, then I would buy it

  • On the plus side, I like to see developers who are confident enough that they feel they can offer higher end software for mobile. Software at all price points should be available if people are willing to pay for it.
