I’m not surprised, so far, Moises is by far the best
I was was wondering if apple got the tech from them for the new logic updates and money has already exchanged hands.
Definitely desktop only, but Steinberg SpectraLayers 11 Pro has a great suite of separation tools!
"Unmix Song" breaks down into any combination as below.
I use it for other things, but ran a couple of tracks through ( on extreme mode of course ) and it did an amazing Job IMO.
More to come with SL 12 imminent ... here's a demo with some separation examples.
Worth a look.
The new version has more granular separation for drums etc. Even a few years ago I would have thought this impossible!
Not the cheapest option by any means but it does run standalone or as an ARA plug in in Cubase, Nuendo, ProTools, Logic Pro, Reaper, Studio One ( I dont think Live ...)
Thank you to everyone who took part and sent over stems for each of the platforms. Against what I thought, the clear winner, by some margin, as of July 4th 2025, based on the current releases, and judged on the quality and clarity of sound, with minimal bleed and artefacts is, Logic Pro for iPad version 2.2.1
I have to say, it’s incredible the level of detail and playing you can pick out on these stems, new piano parts, Hammond organ played through a leslie speaker, the subtle and not so subtle differences in every drum hit, the gorgeous horns and strings, but most of all, the smoothness and elegance of Billy Paul’s vocal.
I loved that record from the first time I heard it. I thought I’d love to use the stems and build something on it, or remix it in some way, but you know what, it doesn’t need it, to me, it’s perfect just the way it is.
The next few months and years is going to be fascinating to see how stem separation develops. I hope, for instance, at some point there will be an option to get stems without reverbs and effects.
Thanks again, it was a great exercise.
Compared to what?
All the other software mentioned in this thread, with the exception of Steinberg SpectraLayers. The results of that one haven’t come in yet.
It would be nice to have an explicit list, I'm mostly interested on knowing if you tested it against Djay
I didn’t, only you mentioned Djay. You’re welcome to send me the stems privately to compare results. Up to you.
