A new version of Piano Motifs (v4.96) is now available. What's new in this version:

    • Added a Random option for the "Every" parameter of the Experimental Accomp Style. This option will cause a note to be played at random intervals.
    • Added a selectable Tonic or Chord option for the User Defined Melody Constraint. This option lets you choose between Tonic scale or Chord tones for your melody notes.
    • Fixed crash that can occur when Grace Notes are used to generate a motif and the Extend feature is used in Arrangements. This can also result in corrupted .motif files. (AUv3 Only)
    • Fixed crash that can occur when using Grace Notes or Rolled Chords in combination with a Delay Start. (AUv3 in Sync mode Only).
    • Improved the Randomize Settings function.

If you set at least one note to be random (“R”) on the "Every" parameter of the Experimental Accomp Style you will get a constantly evolving sequence. Try it out!

If you like all the new features and the music generated by Piano Motifs please consider leaving a review in the App Store, it really helps a lot.

    Enjoy!

Great! Thank you again for all effort and awesome improvements you do and have done for long now. ❤️🔬🧠

I have to ask as someone said something about having PM connected to gadget and using the guitar settings with SantaAna gadget (electric guitar).
It's pretty fun actually but when I wanted to record the midi to gadget I discovered there's no Ableton Link in PM.

I guess /Ableton Link/ been up before? But is there a reason for it not to be implemented?
It's not a problem at all mind you, just curious.

    All the best,
    Ulf

    Hi Ulf ( @Pxlhg ),

At some point in the past, I did look into Ableton Link, but unfortunately it didn’t fit well with the structure of Piano Motifs’ code, so it’s not something I’m able to offer at this time.

I'm not familiar with your workflow and Gadget, but could there be other alternatives, like using a Host (AUM, AudioBus, Loopy Pro) to be the syncing/routing agent between Piano Motifs and Gadget?

Maybe someone else can chime in on how to sync up Piano Motifs and Gadget cleanly.

Thanks for that explanation and sure, that's an idea that probably would work. I'll try with AUM. Thank you!

  • Hi @azul3D_Apps, I just took the time to dive deeper into the app, watching the tutorials and experimenting a bit. You might want to tone down your good work a bit because it's all I've been talking about to my girlfriend in the last few days, and she's getting exasperated. Jokes aside, your app and tutorials teached me a lot about music theory and opened a whole melodic world. Thanks to you, I have a lot of good time doing music that evoke more emotions than what I used to do. Just felt the need to share this! Much appreciated :)

  • @oscillotus, thanks for your kind words 🙏. There's no better reward and motivation than knowing your work has contributed to someone’s enjoyment and helped them along their musical journey. Maybe your girlfriend will forgive you (or us?) if you dedicate or name one of your finished songs after her 😀. Peace ✌️.

    • Added randomize button (dice) to User Defined Melody Constraint.

Hi @lukesleepwalker, the User Defined Melody Constraint, constrains the notes to be used in the melody either from the Tonic Scale (T) , relative to the Chord (Ch) or a combination of both (T/Ch). So, for example, if you use the Tonic option and the scale is CMaj and you choose 1, 3 and 5, the melody will only be using C, E and G for the whole motif. If you use the Chord option and you choose 1, 3 and 5, if the chord for a bar is GMaj, you would be using G, B and D for the melody in that bar. The dice button randomizes the notes to be used.

I don't think I have a video that specifically uses the User Defined Melody constraint, but I do have some sample motifs that use it here:
    https://sites.google.com/site/azul3dapps/home/sample-motif-files
Please take a look at the Guitar, Tonic Arpeggio, Easy Listening. These motifs use the User Defined Melody Constraint in some form or another.

Thank you for another update! Yours is the only app I update instantly as I see one is available. Others I wait a bit, read a bit, then update, but yours has gained a special trusted place in my App Library, that I know it will be even more awesome.

@Dav great to hear that you update instantly to get the new goodies in the app (although sometimes updates come too often ☺️). Hopefully all the updates continue to be smooth. A couple of times I’ve had some that I have had to fix quickly due to an unforeseen problem. If you ever see an issue you can contact me at azul3dapps(at)gmail(dot)com.

  • A new version of Piano Motifs (v4.98) is now available. What's new in this version:

    • Added individual locks for each one of the Settings. This function is very useful when using the Randomization Function (Dice Button) and you don't want the random algorithm to change some specific Settings.
    • Minor fixes and improvements.

If you're enjoying Piano Motifs and the music it generates, please consider leaving a review in the App Store, it helps a lot.

    Enjoy!

  • Nice update Fernando, very intuitive UI change to allow locking / unlocking 👍

  • Review left. The random dice button is my best friend as someone allergic to theory. Thank you!

Thanks Tony, I was a little concerned about cluttering the UI, but I guess the lock/unlock buttons are mostly unintrusive.

Spot on. The UI is intuitive and unobtrusive. And the workflow benefits unlocked are significant. Now that random button is much much more useful to refine variations on a theme. Hats off again, Fernando!

The newest update allowing you to lock each parameter is something I didn’t know I needed. It makes it easier to dial in your objectives without the fear of losing everything with a screen rotation, which in turn makes for further exploration within the app. Awesome feature.

Such an amazing and iconic app. The updates are just the best. I feel like piano motifs is right there with Loppy, Patterning in regards to iOS game changing apps. Absolute best motif generator and capable of so many things. Will instantly up your melody game.

    Appreciated

Thanks so much for your kind words @egobeats 😊🙏.

  • Minor workflow comment. Every time you change a parameter you have to pause and wait for the Generate icon to show again. It’s a minor workflow issue. Does there need to be that little pause each time? For example, when you select a key, then a scale, etc.

Hi @gusgranite, thanks for your feedback. Since you're mentioning the Generate icon, I believe you're talking about the AUv3 Plug-In. I took a look in AUM and as soon as you change, let's say, the Key, the Generate button appears with no delay. What host is this happening in? If you have some time and it's not much trouble, maybe you can DM me a video of what you're seeing. Thanks!

Honestly, something has changed and I’m not seeing it now. Haha. It used to always pause on a pop up message that was something like the ‘No motif, you need to press Generate’ and you couldn’t use the app until that message went away. I just tried to recreate it and I can’t now.

@gusgranite, now that you mention the pop up message, I know what is going on. What you were seeing was a Warning Message. This happens when you lock the Programmed Chord Progression Setting and you press the Randomize Button or you change the Scale. When you press the Randomize button it will say that only the key will be randomized. When you change the Scale it will give you the option to clear the chord progression.
