The parameter locks? I think you just clear the step, then entering it again will use the current sample settings.
Welcome @charlesv
Congratulations on the work!
It definitely looks and sounds interesting! Cheers!
No, lets say I recorded live automation by holding WRIT and moved the PTCH, LEN, FLTR knobs around. Right now if I want to go back to the current sample settings without removing steps I hold WRIT, double click each knob and wait until the sequence has repeated once to let go of the WRIT button. It works for me, was just wondering if there was an alternative like FUNC+WRIT or something…
For the automations the intent is to “overwrite them” with new values:
With step editing now you can (with write toggled on): hold a step, double tap a knob; it will reset the value of that entire step to the default knob position.
I also just added a kit library: easily access imported kits, save your new ones, and open them from the web... i.e. https://charles.pizza/punchline/kits/
Hopefully this makes kit management a little easier; will add sharing next.
Kit library works great! Created my first three kits with the webapp on my laptop, moved the file to icloud and imported in the app.
Since its already an auv3 instrument and effect, it seems that midi effect is a low hanging fruit? I find the sequencing super quick, specially on Iphone… would love to drive other apps with it as a 16 channel midi sequencer. Instead of Length you get gate and level you get velocity…
@philms interesting! So just as a midi sequencer? I’ve never even used one but the concept makes sense. I’ll see how fast I can make it happen.
Yeah, there are quite a few beloved midi only sequencers like Octachron, SnakeBud. You could have the Default be one midi channel per PAD and then just like the SMPL menu choose the midi channel for each PAD to make polyphonic melodies for melodic instruments. With the polyrhythmic options with step length per pad and probability you could come up with some interesting melodies…
Here the links to other midi sequencers.

My App Store account finally got unlocked so now comes the million dollar (I hope) questions. Different but related:
What would you expect this to cost?
How much would you pay for this?
Looks like a fun app @charlesv! The online kit share is very cool!
What about a randomisation option for patterns or maybe a set of basic patterns?
@jer4 Great ideas! I'm running out of button combos so will bank that for an update.
It is a great idea! I was also thinking in that direction when testing so will drop my thoughts here:
While STOPPED, hold the WRIT button and:
Euclidean Step Fill Mode
Button Combo:
Hold WRIT + turn knob 1 FILL → sets number of evenly spaced hits for selected step or pattern section.
Pattern Invert (Flip Steps)
Button Combo:
Hold WRIT + turn knob 2 Flip → incrementally flips steps as you turn it
Pattern Mutation
Button Combo:
Hold WRIT + turn knob 3 Mutation → intensity controls how many steps and parameters are changed.
Pattern Nudge / Rotate
Button Combo:
Hold WRIT + turn knob 4 Nudge → rotates steps left/right by X steps.
About the pricing, its a tricky question… given as its two apps in one, instrument + effect I could probably imagine the 8-15€ range, but I am often cheap so maybe a bit more for the average buyer? In the testing it inspired so many loops I wouldnt have gotten otherwise that I would probably buy it at any point now 😂
$5/month subscription... Just kidding 😅
Tough question. There are a bunch of ways you could go with it.
The closest comparable in terms of feel is probably Koala, although this isn't as powerful. Koala is relatively cheap for the base app, but it also has a mass appeal that most music apps don't.
Staying under $12-15 is probably a good idea. At least having an intro price in that range or lower. My feeling is that driving a bunch of early sales does a lot for an app's tail. It gets used, talked about, recommended. Hard to recapture the new app launch buzz later on.
While I've enjoyed testing it, I'm not sure I need it (or if it would end up in my huge app graveyard). I'd be more interested in the gated effect side if there was more control over parameters. One thing you could do is break out functionality into IAPs. Say, low price for the base app. Then an IAP for the effect AU, with extra controls (not the instrument). And then add a later IAP for MIDI out.
You could also do a free trial period and an IAP to unlock the full app. A fun, groovy app like this tends to hook people, even if they're not sure they need or want it at first.
Just some ideas.
10$ (9.99) max as it is now, imo. If you build a midi seq? That could be an IAP I guess.
Koala is 5$ I think but way more advanced, have IAPs adding features (and cost) as Tim already said.
4pocket just released Oscidia for 15$ (14.99) a very advanced synth so not the same genre but still.
I'm somewhat allergic to IAP (and have never built it), so my hunch is to target ~8.99 and maybe add IAP for something further down the line if it grows. Making sure I've got licenses squared away for all the samples before shipping to the App Store and we'll see how it goes!
@timfromtheborder I do plan to add more control over effects, but after 1.0. But yes, it should be worth it for what it is today, as we always say: don't buy anything for updates it doesn't yet have!
(( anticipation intensifies ))
It’s out!!

Yessss I can’t wait to mess around with this.
It is! I've got a 1.01 coming with some bug and performance fixes soon, so will make some more noise once that's out.
Have fun!

I also made a web version of the manual, available here: https://charles.pizza/punchline/manual.
TestFlight is still ongoing, working on pattern import/export, audio export and FX parameters!
Initial impression: fast and fun! The parameter locking is big here and I smiled at how much Pocket Operator feeling lives through this: the iPhone being roughly the size of a P.O. = happy and familiar form factor.
Wait… this app is how those Teenage Engineering POs work? Neat! Never shelled out for one, and I guess I don’t have to now haha. And agreed, it is a fast, and somehow fun, workflow!
Just pushed a new build to testflight: now with pattern import/export, render a pattern chain to .wav, and FX parameter adjustment (drag an fx pad to change its setting!). https://charles.pizza/punchline/testflight/ plus significant battery reduction when not playing (even with background audio on).
The FX parameters let you get to some nice sounding distortion, too!
Using the FX Pads as (X)Y-Controllers is really great!! Really nice implementation! I love how playing it on my phone requires to use both hands, making it “feel” a bit more like an instrument rather than a software, if this makes any sense?
Ah, a trick I found helpful for some functions was holding and moving the holding finger down to make space for tapping tempo (left thumb holds tempo, right thumb taps) or probability (left thumb holds step, right thumb holds Func and indicator moves the knob)
It does, and is on purpose! I think the "modes" make it feel like more of a performance rather than a programming. It does make it impossible for me to figure out how to bring it to Mac, however...
Punchline 1.1 is out! New in this version: MASSIVE battery life improvements, pattern import/export, wav export, FX parameter tweaking, and a bunch of small improvements. http://charles.pizza/punchline/ or https://apps.apple.com/us/app/punchline-drum-machine/id6748292824
I recently ran my Move through it as a punch-in FX unit and it's so much fun. Hope you enjoy it!
Pattern import/export is a dope addition! Thanks. If it’s not a bother, would you mind explaining this new “fx parameter tweaking”?
Sure! On each fx pad you can drag vertically to adjust the effect. For instance, bit crush amount, delay time, low pass frequency, etc. The effect’s setting is saved per pattern, so it’s like tweaking an effect pedal’s settings.
Just hold an fx pad and drag up and down to hear the change! Note that by default parameters are disabled in the gate effects (gate length) and repeat effects (decay), but those can be turned on in settings.
