Tell me if you want Hasselhoff removed from the title, I really don't know if his excellencies name helps or "stjälps". It should help, but the Hasselhoff is such a misunderstood creature in this time and age. He is after all too awesome for his own good. And I know of no other man, woman nor God, that has achieved this remarkable thing. Except perhaps the Chuck Norris (just look at him, so awesome, very much Kung-fu as well, and every picture of the man looks like an 80s game cartridge box).

@Eraser Why only 'Galway Noise'? Check out Polly Tracker for the C64 by Aleksi Eeben.
    http://csdb.dk/release/?id=18605

    • 4 sample channels
    • 4-9 kHz sample rate on each channel (C-2 = 8000 Hz)
    • 8-bit internal mixing, 4-bit output on stock C-64
    • Dynamic mixing based on polling the hardware timers, never skips a sample
    • 48K reserved for sample data
    • Loads 8-bit unsigned raw samples
    • Edit options to adjust sample volume, trim sample end and octave upsample
    • 6581/8580 ok, NTSC/PAL compatible and IDE64 friendly
    • No SID voices used (except voice 3 output as sequencer sync)
    • Standalone player, module-to-executable and module-to-SID tools included

Or the 'classic' RockMonitor 5 :)
    http://csdb.dk/release/?id=122393

But to be honest, SID-Tracker 64 already delivers and with additional SIDs and maybe higher multi-speed (8x or so) depending of how fast the player on the real C64 is to keep the desired compatibility the need for samples would be considered a bonus. When multi-speed gets higher it should in theory be possible to make 'sample-like' noises with wave & pulse tables by analysing the original sample and selecting approximate wave and pw to 'emulate' the sampled sound, this would require very long tables...

@Segerfalk If the 'ticks per second' get higher it would be nice to have 'separate' ticks for the 'note-tracker' and 'sound-engine'. The BPM tops at 999bpm even when it can go higher :)

I just thought it may (?) be easier to implement than a full blown sample loader, as it's more to do with messing with the register settings. And the sample channel may already have been emulated and just not used?

But mainly because Arkanoid is actually the only SID song with samples that didn't sound a little bit cheesy to me! I just like weird noises and glitch! :oD

Some nice SidTracker64 tracks are slowly popping up. Have you heard - Binary Sculpture - Sid in Dreamland on YouTube? - that's the most impressive one in my opinion. There's even some of that filter side-chaining in it I think.

They are conjoined like welded twins of steel. Sorta. Do you need higher? :D

  • @Segerfalk Haha, no need to go higher it will only make me dizzy looking at all the numbers fly by on the screen :D

That video should sell SidTracker 64 to the 'non believers' regarding versatility and character :D

  • My roommate yelled/ordered me to go Elsewhere after I was playing Sid without headphones. Currently in a ditch, somewhere.

  • @rhcball Don't worry, sooner or later everyone will be assimilated and start to love the SID sound :D

Yes, that is our core mission :D

  • @Segerfalk I do have a small suggestion about 'file handling' in SidTracker 64.

    • A 'folder structure' to keep the user created files and included demo files separated.
    • An option to 'restore' included content without re-installing the app.
    • An option to create/select a 'user template' that is used when starting the app or creating a new song would be nice.

The '.s64 templates' could be used for 'sound/patch-sharing'.
I think a much appreciated feature then would be to be able to easily 'copy' instrument from another project(ie. load instrument from another .s64 file into currently selected instrument slot). This would also make it easy to 'collect' once favourite sounds into a song.

It's very easy to get 'lost in time' when messing around with SidTracker 64 :D

    Good idea, noted

    • An option to 'restore' included content without re-installing the app.

Or write protect it maybe. Yes, I thought of this after release as well. We should make the default s64-files available for download.

    • An option to create/select a 'user template' that is used when starting the app or creating a new song would be nice.

Yes, you could do this with a song, and then enable write protect and save it.

There will be an instrument/patch librarian. More to come!

Tell me about it! I've lost more than half a year of full time work already :D

    • An option to 'restore' included content without re-installing the app.

Just delete the song you want restored, and the default file will be auto installed.

  • @DanielLarsson Oh, that's the way to do it, thanks :)

  • I just had to post to say that I picked this up after watching a video or two, and I think it's just excellent. Is it possible to get these sounds elsewhere? Probably. Does $12.99 U.S. feel a little steep given other more-featured apps available for that price? Maybe.

But I'm a fan of video games and chiptune is a fun, if niche, interest of mine. And SidTracker seems to allow me to do things and get chiptune sounds in a way that other apps have not allowed me to get to work. I'm not really anti-tracker, especially on a PC/keyboard interface, but they can be a mess with iOS. Not so with SidTracker 64 - this really does a good job merging an old-school interface with modern sensibilities. I think the reason it really works for me is that the keyboard is always there for reference, so performing and recording kind of feels similar to laying down MIDI data.

There aren't a TON of presets, but I'm realizing that chiptune really has a somewhat limited number of sounds - many of them are really just variations of lo-fi waves with changes to ADSR, vibrato, or other modulation added in.

Anyway, props to the developer, and I hope the app continues to improve. It's niche, but somehow inspiring and productive the way Gadget or a really good drum machine interface can be.

I agree. From talking cars to eating hamburgers to topping the German pop charts, no one can top the Hoff.

Except perhaps the Chuck Norris (just look at him, so awesome, very much Kung-fu as well, and every picture of the man looks like an 80s game cartridge box).

Yeah Norris was a bad ass when I was growing up. Terrible actor but a legend because he was so cool. If I was lucky my Mom would rent one of his tapes and bring it home. Invasion USA and the Octogon were my favorites.

  • Linear knob interaction will be in the update coming very soon!

  • Cool thanks :)

That's great! That will be a nice addition, as a lot of us prefer linear knob interaction for reliability.

I totally admit to buying the app and diving in without checking instructions or demo videos. So I'm learning little things like how the second number on the tracking bar references the instrument that note will play. This wasn't immediately obvious to someone like me who isn't familiar with trackers - I assumed it was like a DAW where each of the columns represented a particular voice and they had to be all the same instrument.

Any other changes or tweaks being contemplated for future updates? I guess the only one I have right now is an Export feature for "Open In" another app (primarily AudioShare). Dropbox and Email are very appreciated, but that's a clunky way to export shorter clips.

    Thanks!

  • @Segerfalk WOW that was quick work.

Not in the update that will be released next week at least.

  • Excellent to see that Open In will be added! I was going to mention .wav file export, but with chiptunes I would have even more trouble telling the difference than I normally would. Thanks for the update info!

  • @Segarfalk You da Man. Thanks for adding "open in". It's going to be great to open Sid 64 audio files in AudioShare and Cubasis.

  • Here's some SID 'chip-pron' to keep this thread alive until a new of SidTracker 64 arrives :)

@Segarfalk I'm still a bit confused why the triangle wave in SidTracker 64 looks and sounds closer to a sine-wave than a triangle wave? (Maybe I'm too used to the output from the ReSID engine!?).

The 'control-surface' used in the video could serve as inspiration for a future integrated 'SidSynt' ;)

  • Anymore videos or hype? I love this app but Im still really learning.

  • Also, as live jamming: when I set it to a 4 bar loop its pretty damn usuable and the loops don't get old like a 1 bar loop. However I am confused about how the polyphony works. Can you explaing that and how the filter works with the 3 osc . It is a lil confusing, I'm randomly mucking about and I can get things rocking but sometimes I muck up the polyphony or filter.... Thanks
