I’ve been working on this neo-classical noire album* with my band mate Steve for a while now. It’s a nice feeling to finally have it finished an on the streamers.

It was going to be a ‘Burnt Earth’ album but Burnt Earth isn’t Burnt Earth without Sarge so we’re going by the name ‘Klownshed’ now. :-)
Being able to have it on Spotify, Apple Music etc is a nice feeling — a proper underlining of the project. It’s too late to tweak and adjust anything else now. It’s done. Warts and all. :-)

It’s all done on Logic Pro on the Mac. Logic was used for everything — sound design, writing, mixing, mastering, etc.
Most of the sounds are from Spitfire ‘Originals’ series , Appassionata, Abbey Road 2 Strings and Musio.
I made atmospheric beds for a lot of the tunes in various ways.
Lots of stock plugins (virtually all the EQ and compression are stock). Arturia’s granular fx got a lot of use. Reverb is mostly stock (lots of QRS, chromaverb and space designer) plus some Comet.
Delays always got a lot of use. Especially dirty delays to add character and grit. It’s easy to sound too shiny with pristine orchestral libraries and lush reverb. I don’t like things too pristine. :-)
And there’s a sh1t ton of automation on most of the tracks too.

Hahaha 🤣. I would call it a shallow cry for attention if you were churning out and flooding the creation section with half cooked demos and relentlessly self bumping / blaming people for not reacting. Luckily for us, nobody is acting like this on this forum 😉
Here, you shared a very cohesive, incredibly convincing orchestration that was obviously meticulously thought and crafted. you have all the reasons to be proud of such a great achievement !
I feel privileged to have been among the select few who got to hear it first 🙏 .
It can be difficult to find a diamond when it is burried in mud but hopefully some people will catch up. Listening to the whole album is a rewarding experience as the music is so cinematic and evocative.
I am sure someone like @mjcouche could really appreciate the quality of the orchestration.

Orchestration was great! Very beautiful and you gave it space to breathe. Felt like a horror movie crossed with some David Lynch Dune, among others. It was very cohesive - very good with picking and keeping consistency with instrumentation and voicing.
I’d be curious to hear more about your workflows.

I made all the music with my band mate from my old band ‘Burnt Earth’. We’d not made music for a while and after losing our singer I think we both thought that was kind of it.
We’d still meet up regularly and one day we kind of got bored of the pub and thought why not have a go at making music again?
I’d recently bought a few sample libraries from Spitfire in a sale, from their ‘Originals’ series. They were £14.50 each and I bought a few string libraries, a choir and some brass and orchestral percussion. Previewing those they were instantly inspirational and we thought we’d try and make some orchestral/soundtrack style instrumental music which is a big departure from our old style:

The first couple of songs we made were ‘Anthem’ and ‘Home’ and they were both remakes of music we’d already written.
‘Anthem’ was one of the first things we ever collaborated on years and years ago and we’d never actually released any version of it.
Using the spitfire libraries we arranged it using the orchestral sounds and were very pleased with how it turned out. We then re-made ‘Home’ one of our burnt Earth songs:

And that was it. We were back into the flow of making music again!
We then added some more, higher end, Spitfire libraries with legato strings and started writing the music from scratch.
I’d basically load up Logic on the Mac and get a small palette of sounds ready which would form the overall sound.
We’d usual have an idea of a melody, Steve might come up with something which he’d hum or whistle into voice notes and we’d then work on that and build the arrangement up from there.
Sometimes I’d come up with a short snippet - for example the main piano loop in ‘Planets’ which would get us started and then we’d riff on that idea. Steve would often have an idea of where he wanted the arrangement to go and I’d just play things in on the MIDI keyboard, layering as we go. Often we’d come back to things the next week and start over. It was very iterative and we weren’t scared to ditch things if they didn’t work.
One thing that I’d do a lot is create background textures and atmospheric sounds.
Sometimes that was from ‘found sound’ or maybe samples from movies. Most of the projects have multiple aux tracks with granular style fx — sending automated amounts to busses means I can create an ever evolving texture that doesn’t sound static like it does when you stuff a granular fx on an insert. Also I would send multiple tracks to it so the textures are built up from both melodic and non melodic tracks.
The main method is to get something down quickly — maybe a melody on a piano, and then build up with the orchestral sounds by improvising over the foundation. That starting but usually gets deleted as it would have done its job. Steve might play something on guitar which we’d then arrange for brass or strings. Or whatever.
We tried to write for each part of the string section separately rather than just whack out chords — which can sound like a synth pad. We also tried to make the music fairly dynamic and allow the quiet bits to be pretty quiet which gave the loud bits much more room to sound bigger.
I hope that gives an idea. Feel free to ask if you want to know any specifics.
Darker than I expected but then again the ‘noire’ should have given me a clue 🤔
Hints of Carl Orff in a few places I thought ?
I enjoyed that there was a common feel and instrumentation.
I thought it just got better as it went through, I enjoyed the last two tracks the most.

@klownshed thank you for the detailed answer. It’s inspiring and cool to hear the “realness” of voice memos being sent off and building from there, instead of a master in the ivory tower picking each sterile note. Really cool.
